Annual Report 2012 – 2013

From Director

The bygone year saw the growth of IIH to new hights. True to its name, IIH could

collaborate with other organzations to undertake capcity building measurers to

health care personnel, imparting training to reinvent and inculcate the herbal

medicine, benefitting moslty the marginalzed families.

It is delightful to hear from the trainees, who attended the workshops on Patient

Counselling & Herbal Medicine, about how they are able to make use of what they

learned. ‘Whole Person’ approach in patient counselling and care seems to be

catching up. So too, the efforts to facilitate families to reinvent and inculcate the

practice of herbal remedies as home remedies, especially benefitting the

marginalized to reduce their dependence on modern medicine and thereby the out

of pocket expenditure.

During the year, IIH also supported to publish two pertinent issues of Health

Action Magazine, on ‘Nursing Care’ and ‘Communicating Health’.

As a non-profit organization, IIH continues its efforts, in collaboration with Govt.

and other NGOs, to promote holistic and comprehensive quality health care to

benefit most the poor and marginalized families.

We at IIH take this opportunity to thank all our benefactors around and the

resource persons for the trainings, and all the more, CHAI for permitting IIH to

have its office free of cost at its Medchal Training Centre.

MAIN ACTIVITIES DURING THE PERIOD 2012 – 2013

I. Training in Patient Counseling for 60 Health Care Professionals

Considering the increasing number of hospitalized patients, it is our vision to

extend the current patient counseling

services beyond the hospital walls.

Trained patient counselors are

available only in a few hospitals. The

challenge before us is to train and

place patient counselors in all these

institutions to provide the psycho-

social dimension of healthcare for all

our clients irrespective of

denominations. Our medical

professionals needs to be capacitated to

de-stress, heal the hurts and to take

more responsibility for self-healing

and growth.

In collaboration with the Catholic Health Association of India, IIH organized a

training in patient counseling for 60 health care professionals for 5 days at CHAI

Central Office, Secunderabad, from 10 – 14 November 2012.

The main topics dealt were:

The participants were introduced and trained in basics of psycho-social care of

patients; meaning of wholistic approach to health, cure vs. care, healing of body-

mind-spirit person, listening as the core of communication, and accompanying the

terminally ill and dying persons.

The training programme instilled in the minds of the health care personnel the

importance of providing psycho-social care for the patients, integrating a wholistic

approach to health care.

II. Sponsor of 2 issues of ‘Health Action’

IIH supported the publication with two issues of ‘Health Action’, 25 -year-old

monthly magazine published by Health Accessories For All (HAFA), the

publication wing of the Catholic Health Association of India. Health Action

disseminates information on various health topics to enable people to gain

adequate knowledge of health so that they can take care of their health as well as

that of others. The magazine targets paramedical staff, nurses, working in the

three-thousand odd member institutions of CHAI as well as health activists who

work in the various parts of our country.

Health Accessories for All (HAFA) had requested to IIH to sponsor for 2 issues of

Health Action. Accordingly, IIH had sponsored two issues of Health Action, i.e.,

November 2012 (Nursing Care), and December 2012 (Communicating Health).

Four thousand copies of health action were distributed to various hospitals,

dispensaries, colleges, schools and other institutions. The readers of health action

received information on various health topics and maintained health through health

education and good health practices.

November 2012: Nursing Care

Nurses are the frontline workers of medicine.

They work round the clock tirelessly to serve

patients. Whether it is monitoring a critically ill

patient in the ICU or giving a sponge bath, they

give their heart and soul. There are 7 billion

people in the world today. But only 17.6 million

nurses. India has shortage of one million nurses.

Many countries face the problem of shortage of

nurses.

In India, a nurse always walks behind a doctor

doing rounds, assists him on all procedures and

always seeks his approval before doing

everything needed for patient care though on

many occasions they help him in taking right

decision on patient management. Seldom is

‘nursing’ treated on a par with the medical profession, equally important and

distinct in its role. Nursing care and nutrition are as important as curative

medicine and surgical procedures. Nurses are present day and night with the

patient. They are required to work with all modalities of treatment, specializations

and schools of medicine. Thus nursing needs to be given a distinct professional

status to boost its image. It requires autonomy to manage its own cadre and

resources and freedom to take decisions.

Addressing the scarcity of medical practitioners in rural India is fundamental to

achieving universal health care in the country. Many high, middle and low-income

countries also face scarcity of rural doctors. In the United States, UK, many

countries in Africa and even in South Asia individuals such as nurse-practitioners

or physician- assistants’ are given clinical training to take care of patients at the

primary level. Assessments show that they perform as well, if not better, as

doctors. The Medical Council of India would do well to develop a short-duration

course for Nurses on the same lines with the proposed B.Sc. in Community Health.

December 2012: Communicating health

It is a herculean task to make health care

accessible and affordable. In this situation, it

would be a wise strategy to invest in

preventive health care. It is important for

everyone to become educated about

illnesses and what it takes to maintain

health. Some sort of illness hits everyone

eventually. Many diseases when caught

early can be nipped in the bud. Prevention

helps to avoid financial loss or bankruptcy.

Health communication is one of the tools for

promoting or improving health.

Communication plays a vital role in keeping

people healthy by keeping in touch with

what is happening in health around us. Well-

planned communication programmes help to

increase the intended audience’s knowledge and awareness of health issues or

solutions. It can help reinforce knowledge, attitude and behaviour. It can also bust

myths and misconceptions. It effects changes in individuals and society.

Besides print and visual media, the internet has emerged as a powerful source of

health information. It has revolutionized health communication. The government

has to focus effectively towards communicating health which will pay dividends in

the years to come.

Updated, specialized and authentic information was disseminated to around a lakh

readers (subscribers 4000) on the above said health topics.
