Make Today Count

Author: John Maxwell Publication: Hachette-India When I picked this book it’s subtitle or the punch line attracted me. It said “The Secret of Your Success Is Determined by Your Daily Agenda ”. On reading this I was reminded of a very common suggestion given by all parents or elders to young generation which is “Pay now and play later or play now and pay later.” The idea is if you take today easy then tomorrow i.e. the future will be harder, but if you work hard today then you will reap rewards in future.

DIET e-Newsletter, October 2017

Most of us are not an exception to this very common advice but rarely we do have a clear perception of what exactly should I work on today to make my future better. With a curiosity to get an answer to this I selected this book to read and today I am glad that I made that decision.

In Make Today Count, John Maxwell strongly conveys that there are two important ingredients that help to convert an ordinary day into a masterpiece and these are: decisions and discipline. To make good decisions and then to discipline oneself to manage these decisions daily are essential to build a better life. This indeed is very true as a decision without discipline is like a plan without payoff and discipline without decision is like hard work without rewards.

With this prelude John Maxwell raises an important question - “what are the critical areas on which decision and discipline has to be acted upon?” Answer to this question is the book – Make Today Count. John has narrowed down to 12 critical areas for success in life and he calls it “Daily Dozen.” These areas are – Attitude, Priorities, Health, Family, Thinking, Commitment, Finances, Faith, Relationships, Generosity, Values and Growth. The book has 12 chapters one on each of these critical areas. By sharing his life experiences and his observations John has explained importance of each of these in our life. Not only this, he also guides on how to make decisions and how to cultivate discipline in each of these areas. His clarity on each of these reflects his own sincere study of life and through this book he is able to transfer that insight to the readers.

Reading this book I realized that John Maxwell is expert in putting important and heavy ideas in a very simple way. Many of his one-liners in the book can make you to think for a long time and can be accepted as sutras for success. For example “Experience isn’t always the best teacher – evaluated experience is!” or “Your attitude is a choice” or “Your choices are the only thing you truly control”. Stories and incidences from his life described in the book are also very interesting and heart touching. Author being from Christian faith cites the Bible as source for many of his ideas in this book and in his life.

To summarize, the book is well written. It has a clear objective which is served very well . It is well structured and self-contained. The writing is concise, uses plain language and contains plenty of concrete examples to illustrate Maxwell’s points. Further the book is relatively short –around 136 pages. For readers interested in self-development, this book serves as a guide and is a must read book. -By Nimesh Jotangia (Librarian, DIETDS)
