Institution Ident

By Lydia Hughes, Ella Duncan and Tia Maletta

Institution Ident As a group, we came to the agreement that the genre for our trailer would

be Thriller. In addition to the above, we also came to the decision that we would also like to incorporate action as the sub-genre for our film. A perfect example of an action thriller film, includes the Taken film series. As shown in the image on the right, the Production Company that has both produced and distributed the Taken Film series is Europa Corp, which is one of the major film producers in France and Europe, head-quartered in Saint-Denis near Paris – and one of only a few fully integrated independent studios that both produces and distributes feature films.

As displayed on the right, the Institution Ident for Europa Corp consists of a blue, starry background, which adds to the idea of mystery and uncertainty; this is a key feature which is existent right the way through the Taken Film Series. As well as this, the Production Company Name is bold and clear, which flows well with the background colour as Europa Corp is coloured in a different shade of blue to the background. A fairy, posing like a ballerina represents the letter ‘r’ within the Company Name, which adds to the idea of mystery and also gives the Production Company a recognisable logo/symbol. Furthermore, the Production Company Name seems to create a reflection in what appears to be water below. On that account, it is more than evident that action thriller has to generate a sense of the unknown and therefore increase ones curiosity, anxiety and temptation to access the truth.

On the far right, the film cover for Taken exhibits Bryan Mills (Neeson) running through a cobbled street of Paris, whereas the Inception film cover exhibits DiCaprio and the rest of the Inception cast standing on a deserted city road, taking in their surroundings. Furthermore, the image used for the cover of the film The Silence of the Lambs displays a woman looking directly at the camera (causing direct address). This woman is seen to have a yellow/gold coloured butterfly covering her mouth, while her skin colour is identified as blue. Each film cover shown on the right take into account a thriller genre, each containing blue lighting to add to the mystery of each film.

Background of our Institution Ident As a group, we found that the most important feature for our ident was that it needed

to create a sense of uncertainty and mystery for our future viewers. Like the institution ident for Europa Corp, we found an image that enhanced mystery as it denotes a starry sky, which is then reflected in the lake below. In contrast with the lit sky, as a result of the stars, the landscape exhibits dark hills, which adds to the secrecy of the location depicted in the image. Nevertheless, we felt that the blend of exciting colours, such as pink, purple and orange did not indicate thrill or uncertainty, instead we felt it signposted joy, hope and happiness. For that reason, we decided to recolour the image, so that our ident would flow well with our action thriller genre, and as a result offer an unsettling experience for viewers from the very beginning of the film.

Deciding on our Background Colour

As suggested on the previous slide, we decided to recolour the background image of our institution ident as we felt the original colouring did not work well with our genre. As displayed on the right, we tested a variation of colours until we finally decided what we felt worked best. As you can see, we chose the blue option, since we felt it best enhanced the mystery of our future action thriller film. This was because the blue lighting heightened the starry sky, while the dark hills still remained, offering an unsettling setting for viewers. In addition to the above, the blue lighting forces viewers to believe that this film is more than likely going to be set during the night, indicating that the unknown is present.

Institution Ident For our font, we wanted to have a unique style so that our corporation

differed from those operating with the same genre. In addition to this, we wanted a font that flowed well with the genre of our movie, and so we chose a font called ‘Scary Halloween’ font as it appears creepy, yet mysterious at the same time. Now that we have created our text for our institution ident, exhibiting our Film Production Company name, we felt that something was missing. That being the case, we decided to take images in order to offer our ident a symbol, which not only brings recognition for our viewers, but also creates further thrill and anxiety. For that reason, we chose to take an image of an eye peaking through a whole, to convey curiosity and the unknown. As displayed in the images below, we changed the image into black and white and sharpened the image, which as a result brought greater emphasis upon Tia’s eye. As shown in the images below, we placed the image of Tia’s eye, onto our background in Photoshop, and using the Magic wand toll removed the excess background, which was unnecessary.

UADA Films Institution Ident Even though we created a symbol (eye) for our Institution Ident, we decided to keep it

simple and instead just use the text and a background image for our Ident. Although it is simple, we feel it is extremely effective as our future viewers will be able to identify with our Film Production Company immediately. After carrying out detailed research on different thriller films, the blue lighting is a common colour/feature that is used to generate a sense of mystery.
