This is the field component of yearlong student teaching which students do as AGED 494 Internship and AGED 331 Work Based Learning. Added EDFN 351 Teaching & Learning I (1 credit). This course focuses on characteristics of learning, on learning differences, and on learning environments. Added 1 credit AGED 404L Methods of Agricultural Education Lab. This addition allows for more inclusion of the diverse situations students will face in an agriculture program. It also brings it into harmony with the FCSE Methods course.

7. Explanation of the Change: This curriculum change reflects the need to align the major to reflect similar credit requirements with other programs across the state. (BHSU 37, USD 36). The existing program requires a disproportionate number of credits in the major, which discourages entry into the major and reduces the ability of students to tailor their coursework, for example, by adding a second major. The redesigned program will require approximately the same number of credits in the major as other regental institutions and should enhance student demand. SDSU’s program retains its distinctive focus on the Lakota language.

Explanation of the Change: Faculty in Communication Studies have spent the past year discussing curriculum and student learning outcomes. Based on our conversations and a review disciplinary standards we proposing a number of curriculum modifications which will enhance our programmatic offerings and align us with our disciplines standards. Most importantly, the proposed changes provide a better experience for our graduates and will help prepare them for employment market demands. Each of the proposed changes is highlighted below.

1. Changed the names of SPCM 441 from Health Communication Research Methods to Health Communication Campaigns and SPCM 465 from Capstone: Speech Communication to Capstone: Communication Studies. The change more accurately defines the work being conducted within this course and is aligned with national standards in communications studies.

2. Added SPCM 498 Undergraduate Research/Scholarship as a program elective. The department has increased the undergraduate research output over the past year. Academic credit for this work has traditionally been earned through independent study. The modification will provide more accurate documentation for the type of student work that is completed.

3. Added SPCM 422 Persuasion. This course would be added as a major requirement. This course would replace SPCM 460 Family Communication, which has had declining enrollment over the past few semesters.

4. Added SPCM 311 Business and Professional Communication. This course would be added as an optional requirement/elective. The course would replace SPCM 340 Oral Interpretation of Literature, which has had declining enrollment over the past few semesters.

5. Added SPCM 491 Independent Study and SPCM 492 Topics and course electives.

Change to admissions requirements Current: GRE: Not required TOEFL: Economics requirement of 550 paper-based, 79-80 Internet-based IELTS: 5.5

Proposed: GRE: Not required TOEFL: Economics requirement of 575 paper-based, 90-91 Internet-based IELTS: 6.0

7. Explanation of the Change: Currently, the M.S. degree program in economics requires advanced microeconomics (ECON 704), advanced macroeconomics (ECON 703), econometrics (ECON 705), and research methodology in applied economics (ECON 707). The program emphasizes economic research; students complete either a five-credit thesis (ECON 798; Option A in the Graduate School catalog) or a two-credit research project (ECON 788; Option B in the Graduate School catalog). Furthermore, students design individualized plans of study from approved elective courses in business economics, agricultural business, general economics, and agricultural and resource economics. The overall objective of the program is to prepare students for further graduate study as well as to prepare students for professions in private industry and government. Put differently, the overall objective of the program is to serve students whose professional interests range from advanced study in economics to careers in industry and government. The proposed program modification would better serve all these students. The proposed program would require either advanced business decision science (DSCI 660) or econometrics (ECON 705); both courses emphasize analytical and statistical methods that inform decision making in the contexts of private industry and government. Additionally, the proposed program would require either advanced microeconomics (ECON 704) or managerial economics (ECON 531); advanced microeconomics emphasizes microeconomic theory, whereas managerial economics emphasizes microeconomic practice. As such, the proposed program would enable students to tailor an intellectually rigorous plan of study that best suits their professional interests. For example, a student who seeks advanced study in economics would choose advanced microeconomics (ECON 704), econometrics (ECON 705), the appropriate complement of approved elective courses in economic theory, including advanced macroeconomics (ECON 703), and a thesis option (ECON 798); meanwhile, a student who seeks a profession in industry or government would choose managerial economics (ECON 531), advanced business decision science (DSCI 660), the appropriate complement of approved elective courses in applied economics and business, and a capstone research-project option (ECON 788).

Program Forms, Substantive Program Modification Form (last revised 08/2016) Page 3 of 3

Finally, the proposed increase in TOEFL and IELTS minimum scores is necessary, because all students must achieve highly effective written- and oral-communication competencies in order to complete the program successfully.

7. Explanation of the Change:

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering is to strengthen and broaden the technical background of the students by providing advanced study and research opportunities that will allow students to make original contributions to the field. The current Electrical Engineering Ph.D. program only recruits students that have earned a Master degree. These students typically take 3 years to complete their coursework and dissertation research. The 60 Credit Plan is comprised of 24 credit hours of course work and 36 credit hours of dissertation research. The 60 Credit Plan would be maintained as one option, however the department requests a second option to allow students with a Bachelor degree to apply to Electrical Engineering Ph.D. program. These students will complete 90 credits including 30 credit hours of coursework and 60 credit hours of dissertation research. The students on this track will take about 5 or 6 years to complete their Ph.D. study. The added option is expected to improve the quality of the education and research of the Ph.D. program because the students can work on a research project for the research faculty for a longer time, which can help the students conduct more in-depth research. In addition as senior students, they would have earned more years of experience to train new students.

7. Explanation of the Change: Students are required to fulfill three of the experiential learning pedagogies. The proposed changes create unique categories associated with each experiential learning pedagogy as opposed to the prior list that grouped several pedagogies together in one category. Keeping with the expectation to list specific course requirements would require annual modifications as participating departments submit program and course modifications. The fact that Experiential Learning courses are noted in WebAdvisor each semester (similar to how Honors courses are noted) make the need to list specific courses less relevant in the catalog each year. Further, students are required to submit a certificate completion plan in consultation with the Experiential Learning Coordinator when they complete the

EXPL 280 course. The program also allows students to contract courses, even if the courses are not officially approved by the EXPL program, as long as an appropriate experiential learning project is agreed upon by the student, faculty member and EXPL coordinator.

Definition: A program that prepares public health specialists to plan and manage health services in local community settings, including the coordination of related support services, government agencies, and private resources. Includes instruction in public health, community health services and delivery, health behavior and cultural factors, local government operations, human services, health communication and promotion, health services administration in local settings, environmental health, preventive and comparative medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, family and community health, and applicable law and regulations. 7. Explanation of the Change:

Through exit interviews of graduating students, the department has become aware that the current name for the major, Health Education, is misleading. When students see the Health Education major, they assume that it is K-12 Health Education. The program focuses on community health. Furthermore, a growing number of students are interested in pursuing graduate programs, including master of public health. The current major with a few electives will prepare students well for the MPH program. The name change is proposed to reflect the focus of the program, community; and to make students aware of the link to public health. The requested CIP code will accurately reflect the nature of the program.

7. Explanation of the Change: These changes were necessary to align the program with the requirements of the Great Plains IDEA curriculum that was agreed upon by the six participating institutions. The Family and Consumer Sciences Education program offered by Great Plains IDEA offers two tracks – 1) for those seeking initial teacher certification, and 2) for certified FCS teachers and professionals. The Teacher Licensure/Certification

Emphasis is a 38- to 41-credit-hour program of study for students with a bachelor's degree in a FCS Education content specialization or a related area who seek initial teacher certification or licensure in FCS Education. This includes 2-6 credit hours of practicum and 6-9 credit hours of student teaching (depending on certification requirements). Standards for teacher certification vary by state. Students are responsible for identifying and meeting requirements in the state where they want to be certified. This may include additional coursework, tests, or other requirements. The Professional Practice Emphasis is a 36-credit-hour program of study for professionals in FCS Education including certified teachers who seek professional development and career advancement. This program provides continuing education to maintain and sustain high quality FCS programs in middle and secondary school and other settings. The program will no longer offer Option A – Thesis or Option B – Research/Design Paper. Students will complete Option C – Coursework Only.

7. Explanation of the Change:

The proposed change provides a minor that is more efficient in course offerings. Due to curriculum changes in the Physical Education and Sport, Recreation, & Park Management majors, some of the courses are not offered. The proposed recreation minor will also aid the department in assigning workload more efficiently.

7. Explanation of the Change: SDSU requests to change the name of the minor from Speech Communication to Communication Studies. This change would be effective immediately for all students. The request to change the name of the minor is needed to bring the program in line with the current discipline standards. A google search of Speech Communication Minor brings up a very short list of programs which

Page 36: Institutional Substantive Program Modification Requests · 5/10/2017  · ACADEMIC AFFAIRS FORMS Institutional Substantive Program Modification Requests ... Microbiology, Molecular

illustrates how dated this current major name is.

Also, the use of term Speech Communication is outdated and does not accurately describe or reflect the type of work that is being done in the department or discipline. In 1997, the disciplines governing body changed its name from the Speech Communication Association to the National Communication Association. This change was based on a multitude of issues arising from an increasingly complex society and the influence of the electronic age. More so, the change in name provides a more reflective perspective of the important work that we do which is well beyond teaching public speaking/speech. It was at this same time that many other universities made the move to change the name of their program as well.
