Gilbert Assignment 8.1 7/28/09

Instruction Proposal: University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Tools Workshop Proposal

As the Dual Enrollment Library Coordinator, I would like to invite high school media specialists to our library to participate in a 2 day workshop that focuses on how to use UNO Tools: MyUNO (Blackboard), MyMail, MyFolder, and E-BRUNO.

Dual enrollment students would benefit from this training because if they decide to attend UNO they will already be one step of other incoming students by knowing how to use UNO Tools.

High School media specialists would benefit from this training because it would provide them with the knowledge and skills they need in order to assist dual enrollment students.

UNO would benefit from this training because incoming students would be familiar with UNO Tools and less time would be spent training new students. That time saved could be focused on other areas of need, such as assisting with research assignments.

Learning Activity

Learners will use advance organizers about storing and retrieving files to structure new information.

Learners will use analogies about storage and retrieval to connect new concepts to old concepts.

Learners will participate in a discussion where they are presented with a scenario that they must problem solve for the best option. The scenario will lead them to the conclusion that remote file storage is the best option.

Learners will describe their previous knowledge/experience with remote file storage and UNO Tools, including their purposes, in a Word or PowerPoint file that they will save and use for demonstrating their skill at using UNO Tools.

Learners will observe a demonstration of all of the UNO Tools.

After each instructor demonstration, learners will use a computer with an internet connection to demonstrate their ability to successfully use all of the UNO Tools.

Learners will discuss how their students enrolled in the Dual Enrollment Program will benefit from using the UNO Tools.

Target Audience

Media Specialists who teach at a high school that participates in UNO’s Dual Enrollment Program.

Demonstrated Need

The majority of the students who are enrolled in UNO’s Dual Enrollment Program decide to attend UNO to obtain their Bachelor’s Degree. These students would make an easier transition from high school to UNO if they were already familiar with how to use UNO Tools.

Gilbert Assignment 8.1 7/28/09 When Media Specialists who teach at high schools that participate in UNO’s Dual Enrollment Program were asked what library or university resources they would find most beneficial to know how to use, the overwhelming response was UNO Tools.

It would be more efficient for us to invite media specialists to campus to attend a workshop than for me to travel to each school to instruct the media specialist on UNO Tools.

The Office of Academic Affairs, which is responsible for the Dual Enrollment Program, has asked each department to put activities in place that will bring program participants on-campus.

Objectives 1. For learners to be able to check which courses they are registered for using their MyUNO

account . [Application] 2. For learners to be able to use the internet to access their MyFolder account to retrieve a stored file from their server space. [Application] 2. For learners to be able to check to see if they have any “holds” on their accounts using their E-BRUNO account. [Application]

4. For learners to be able to send the instructor an e-mail with the descriptions of the UNO Tools attached. [Application]
