Vacant - School Improvement Math Specialist September 2015

“Assist district administrators from component school districts to provide School Improvement program and technical support with a concentration in Mathematics.”

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES:

The School Improvement Math Specialist position is currently vacant. The first round of interviews for this position, held in early July, did not yield a favorable candidate pool. The position has been reposted and applications have been reviewed. An interview team representative of BOCES and component district administrators will interview four candidates on October 6th. We are looking for strong math content and pedagogical expertise at the secondary level. We are most hopeful to have a candidate to recommend to the Board at the November 14th Board meeting. In the meantime, Janine Brutvan continues to serve as a math consultant and provides needed professional development and support to component district elementary math teachers.

Our mission is to be instructional partners in preparing life-long learners for the 21st century.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES: (ex. new initiatives, status of program, updates on older efforts, student achievements, etc.)

I made visitations to two schools in Monticello this month. I visited Kaiser Middle School to discuss library programs and goals for those programs. I

have been assisting the teacher assigned to the Chase Elem library as everything was removed from the room to replace carpet with tiles. Most of

the furniture was put back but all the books were mixed up on the shelves. It would have been impossible for anyone to locate specific titles in that

state. I made several visits to work on organizing the books to be able to circulate them, instructing Mrs. Prestianni on adding and changing

students’ records in the TLC software, and weeding out books due to less shelves available now.

I attended two meetings of district administrators and was able to demonstrate the new Rosen eBooks purchased this summer for classroom use. I

also shared the new eBook collection on OverDrive with them that includes titles that supplement the ELA modules for students with reading

difficulties. These books can be found together or by searching by reading lexile (level).

The School Library System held its first Council meeting and professional development of the year. The members split into two groups and worked

with the Information Literacy Assessments in developing inquiries for their teaching. They then shared their groups’ work with those present and

discussed alternatives or modifications they could make depending on the class.

Jennifer Williams, Teacher Center September 2015

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES:

I began in the Teacher Center at the beginning of July. I have received a welcoming reception among the ISS staff and look forward to future collaborations between programs. During the month of July I worked on completing the state required End of Year Report which documents the activities sponsored by the Teacher Center grant during the past year. It was not an easy task tracking down all the required documentation, but it was a good way for me to review the past year’s activities. I have also been working on becoming acquainted with the programs currently being offered as well as discussing with ISS providers the needs of the districts. This includes continuing to support the “Inquiry Writing Social Studies Framework” professional development offerings this past summer. These courses will continue to be offered throughout the school year with workshops focusing on specific grade levels.

Trainings/Conferences Attended:

7/22- The Data Are Coming: Get Ready to Access with L1RPT - This workshop helped me understand the types of data that are being used in districts to identify student needs.

8/19- Inquiry Learning: Taking Apart the Puzzle for a Deeper Understanding - This workshop expanded upon the 7/22 workshop to help participants gain a deeper understanding of the data and in what ways this information can be accessed to show trends in student performance

8/25- Socratic Seminar: Achieving Mastery Through Dialogues- I attended this workshop as well as the Teacher Center collaborated with BOCES to provide reference books for the participants on this topic.

8/26- The Scores Are In - Now What? Evidence-Based Learning and the Impact on Class Instruction - I attended this workshop as well as the Teacher Center collaborated with BOCES to provide reference books for the participants on this topic.

9/29- Attended the network meeting of the Mid-Hudson Teacher Center Directors

“Building capacity to support quality programs and outcomes for students throughout the educational community”

On the Horizon:

I will continue to work with both the ISS staff and districts to develop professional development opportunities. I have been working with Susan Zieres and art teachers in the county to explore NYSATA's Portfolio Project emphasizing a student's creativity and ability to express their knowledge and experiences in artwork, writing and personal presentation. In October, the first Teacher Center Policy Board meeting will be held. Increased participation by the teachers to become more active in identifying professional development needs in their districts will be emphasized. There will be a state-wide Teacher Center meeting called the “Fall Focus” at the end of October. The focus of this meeting will be developing a system to evaluate on-going professional development offerings to determine their effect on teacher practice and student performance. I look forward to learning more on this topic and applying knowledge to programs offered in Sullivan County.
