Physics
“I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.” Albert Einstein
The universe functions according to certain rules,
Physics is about learning those rules!
Quark <10-15 m Visible Universe ~1027 m
- Why Physics courses are difficult? It is not.. We need to learn many concepts, link them together to form a
more comprehensive idea. + a lot of math!.
In this course: Aspects of motion: • Kinematics: Mathematical description of motion.
• Dynamics: Force the “cause” of motion, and acceleration the “effect”.
• Work and Energy.
Types of Motion: straight-line motion, Projectile motion, Uniform circular motion, Rotational and oscillatory motion.
Tools: Equations of motion in 1D and 2D, Newton’s laws of motion,
HyperPhysics, R. Nave , Department of Physics and Astronomy, Georgia State University.
Projectile to Satellite! What goes up may not come down!

Why bicycles are stable at all !!
“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein
Mathematical tools to consider for this course
• Dealing with numbers: scientific notation and power
of 10, prefixes, significant figures and
approximations.
• Coordinate systems.
• Vectors: components of a vector (A, Ɵ) (Ax,Ay)
• Trigonometry: Right-angle trigonometry
(Pythagorean theorem)
• Solving equations, solving quadratic equation.
Solving problems strategy! • Read the entire problem carefully.
• List the numerical values given in the problem and make
sure to use the variable symbol used in the course, this will
help you recall the appropriate equation easily.
• Units! Check if units are consistent and convert if needed.
• Map out your solution plan by drawing a sketch or a
motion diagram if applicable.
• Make a list of possible formulas ( or mark them in your
formula sheet) this will help you decide which equation to
use to find the unknown variables.
