work? Thats what my mum said

when I told her Id got this job

(note: she is a woman who does

    the vacuuming in hIgh heels

so, for her, wearing a kagoul on

    my commute is an abomination).

youve lived in a lot of places are there elements from everywhere youve lived in what you do?Defnitely. Each collection

    is about a specifc location

    thats important to me

so far. I might run out!

    My very frst collection

was to do with the beach

    in Brazil where my family

    spends each Christmas

    and New Year. It was

    what everyone needs for

ten days at a beach. But

    a very glamorous beach!

so where is this pre-collection based on?I live in LA and Im

    really familiar with

    the whole scene

    there. This collection

    was based on

    cholo and chola

    people who are

    Spanish Mexican

    and Indian Aztec.

What music do you listen to when you are designing?I listen to music

    specifc to the

    collection. For

pre-fall it was a lot of

    cumbia a Mexican

    country and western

    sound and Gwen

    Stefani, because she had

    that chola look going on

    for a while. My research

    isnt necessarily about

    just the clothes. Its food,

    music, architecture, living

    environments everything

    about that person in

    that situation.

Which celebrities would you like to see wearing your clothes?

    A lot of designers

    are friends with the

    celebrities they dress.

    And I have no celebrity

    friends! But I would

    love Lake Bell to

    wear my clothes.

    Shes kooky and cool.

    And I also love

    Diane Kruger. The

    only person whos

    worn anything so

    far is Pixie Lott.

    Shes cute.

    Alexander Lewis is

    available from Avenue

    32 (avenue32.com). Prices

    start at 275.

elements of high fashion, telling his models to strut down the

black shifts to wear for her inaugural offcial

    First Lady portrait.

His fashion career began at the age of fve,

when Kors insisted his mother cut all the bows

off her wedding dress. By his late teens, he was

selling hand-stitched leather bags and copper

bracelets from a makeshift boutique in his

parents Long Island basement. And in 1981,

    his label was offcially born.

The Michael Kors look has always been slick,

sporty and pure Manhattan, with clothes that

are as easy to wear as they are beautifully cut.

And, boy, have they sold. This year, he became

one of a handful of fashions billionaire

designers (his wealth in February rose by 20

million in a single DAY). Thirty years after his

very frst catwalk show, we caught up with the

    man himself for a chat.

    Does fashion take itself too

    seriously?

Absolutely. I think sometimes we all need

to lighten up. Its fashion it should be fun.

I like when my models smile and have a bit

of personality because thats what brings

    the clothes to life.

are fashion Designers born or maDe?

My entire family was fashion-obsessed. My

mother was a model and my grandmother was

a high-school principal whose favourite thing

was to say that she never wore the same outft

twice. Id sit at the dinner table listening to

them argue over the shade of a shoe for hours.

They defnitely were the starting point for me.

I wouldnt be where I am today without them.

DiD you always know youD make fabulous clothes?

I think so. I had a pretty strong point of view on my mothers

wedding dress when I was only fve years old!

what woulD you tell yourself 30 years ago?

Take your time. Get to know yourself, the type of clothes you want

to design and who you want to design for, then listen. Listen to your

customers, to your peers, to your mentors.

    whos your ultimate Design hero?

I think Halston really blew the doors open

for American sportswear. He took this idea

of glamour and luxury and turned it into

    something modern and sexy.

are you still very hanDs on?

Absolutely. Day to day, Ill meet with everyone

from design to PR to merchandising. I have a

lot of opinions, so I like to know whats going on.

so tell me what i neeD to know

    about trenDs...

If a trend doesnt work for your body or your

    lifestyle, then walk away.

    whats new this season?

My s/s 2014 collection was all about slowing

down, bringing some charm and romance back

into our lives. I think when the weather gets

warmer, we all want to wear something a little

    softer, a little more romantic.

what shoulD we buy this summer?

If youre going to have a summer romance,

you need a dress you can dance in. I think

theres something very romantic about a white

    dress on sun-kissed skin.

ive got the trench. the rest of my

    forever items are..?

A black cashmere sweater, a white blouse,

a pencil skirt and a great pair of trousers.

    All perfectly tailored.

what Do you think keeps us coming

    back to your stores?

You can get everything you need, whether

its a maillot [stretch jersey] gown or a fip-fop. A mother and

her teenage daughter can come in knowing that both can fnd

something they love. Its a great thing, and a modern way to shop.

is there anyone you still really want to Dress?

Kate Middleton. I admire the way she presents herself. And who

wouldnt want to dress a princess?

tell us something we Dont know about you

We made bodysuits for men once. But Ill never do that again.

    why it works

Its a tricky balance: being comfortable on your feet for hours

but still looking chic enough to blend in on Bond Street.

Jeans with hefty turn-ups and fat sandals with a spattering

of jewels have the look nailed.

    why it works

Note the lack of waistband on this slinky dress (more room for

food!) and the mid-length hem (more fattering than a mini

when sitting). The muted colour is great with statement court

shoes, then just add a simple cover-up, like a boxy jacket.

    why it works

Brunch is the best time to work a laid-back look, but you still

  • ew women are more effortlessly dazzling

or more enjoyable to watch on the red

carpet or at dressy charity events than

Sarah Jessica Parker. She is a fashionista

and the girl next door rolled into one, and

its sometimes impossible to tell her apart from the irrepressible,

clever and vulnerable Carrie Bradshaw character of Sex And

The City fame. Every time I interview Sarah Jessica, Im

reminded she is that and so much more. She is an incredibly

    thoughtful, substantive and eloquent actor-producer-activist

and mother. A person of accomplishment and commitment.

When I meet up with her in a midtown Manhattan

restaurant one afternoon, Parker is wearing a taupe-and-

black-striped sweater, boyfriend jeans, a ftted Level 99

denim jacket and a knitted cap. Her dish today is yellowtail

jalapeo sashimi (she ends up ordering it twice), but she

graciously declines a waiters offer of champagne because she

has to be in top form for the play she is doing off-Broadway

that night. Parker comes across as the sweetest, most

low-maintenance and fun person youd ever hope to meet.

Total girl-crush material. This despite a hectic life of juggling

theatre, developing flm and TV projects (including a new

HBO half-hour comedy series) and, above all, raising her son,

James Wilkie, 11, and twin daughters, Tabitha and Loretta,

four, with husband Matthew Broderick. (By the way, she and

I share a love of minivans.) And now Ms Parker, the game

entrepreneur, is launching a line of shoes, handbags and one

trench coat called what else? SJP, to be sold exclusively at

Nordstrom. Given her level of success and, frankly, the stardust

that comes with her career choice, Im always struck by her

humility and how anchored she is. Shes unfailingly polite, kind

and even more interested in you than showing how interesting

she is. When we sat down for this interview, in classic, classy

Sarah Jessica fashion, she turned the tables on me.

SARAH JESSICA PARKER Why do you look so good?

I guess because youre happy. You look so great!

    KATIE COURIC I am happy!

SJP Your skin is so gorgeous. Whatever youre doing

    KC Really? Thanks, Im trying.

SJP Are you making plans for your wedding?

KC Yeah, but last night John [Molner, Courics fanc] and

I were saying maybe we should do something small. I worry

about it becoming a big production.

SJP Dont let it get crazy. Just have an elegant party.

KC Im not 22 I dont want big bouquets on every table.

SJP And how are the girls [Courics daughters, Ellie, 22,

    and Carrie, 17]?

KC Theyre good. I think at frst they were a little freaked

out because it was just the three of us for so long, but now

    theyre excited.

    SJP Well, Johns very sweet.

KC But we have to talk about you, for InStyle.

SJP Yes, Katie Couric. This is hilarious.

IVE ALWAYS ADMIRED YOUR fASHION SENSE ON AND

Off Sex And The CITy, THE WAY YOU PUT THINGS

TOGETHER, WHERE I WOULD LOOK LIKE A fLEA-

    MARKET REfUGEE. No, you wouldnt.

I WOULD. SO, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE SARAH

JESSICA PARKERS REAL STYLE? Today I look a little raggedy.

I was taking the subway and picking up the kids from school.

YOU LOOK COMfORTABLE. If YOU HAD YOUR WAY,

WOULD YOU DRESS LIKE THIS EVERY DAY, OR WOULD

YOU PUT ON THE DOG, AS MY MOM USED TO SAY?

Well, I think I do have my way. I pretty much dress for what

Im doing. I relish when theres minimal expectation. But I

still love getting to wear something incredible for one night.

Its great to be a mother in jeans or cords, then have these

alternate-universe moments where I sort of live in a fantasy.

YOU HAVE AN ENVIABLE PHYSIqUE YOU DO! YOURE

SLIGHT AND YET, YOU KNOW, WOMANLY [LAUGHS].

I KNOW, I SOUND LIKE IM HITTING ON YOU, BUT YOU

WEAR CLOTHES SO WELL. Thanks, but what I wear now is

different from what I would have worn even three years ago.

I wear a lot of three-quarter sleeves and dresses that feel

more modest. I dont have an urge to wear tube tops. I chose

not to work out for the past few months because I have

this play Im doing and Im busy with my children. Being

    super-ft is not a priority.

DID YOU EVER COMMIT A REAL fASHION fLUB, WHERE

YOU LATER THOUGHT, WHOOPS, I JUST COULDNT PULL

THAT ONE Off? Im sure. But Ill wear something because

I respond to it or Im excited about the designer. So I think

pulling it off or not pulling it off, that almost doesnt exist

for me because, really, Im looking for experiences, not some

report card. So you choose a dress that people think is a

disaster. In the end who really cares?

I THINK YOURE DARING. No, I think Daphne Guinness or

Lady Gaga or Madonna people like that are daring. But I do

love fantasy, colour and the idea of no rules. You know, stripes

and stripes and stripes, or every blue at once. Its good to take

    chances. But daring

It arrived in a box bigger than this whole booth. And I was

concerned! But you cant say to Philip Treacy, I want a polite

hat. You have to just go with it. And when am I ever going

    to have that experience again?

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR NEW SHOE LINE. IM SURE YOU

WERE APPROACHED A MILLION TIMES. WHY DO IT

NOW? Earlier opportunities never seemed right. I kept

saying, This just isnt what I imagined. If Im going to ask
