Insulation Materials and Temperature

Ranges

Temperature limits of some common insulation materials

Temperature limits of some common insulation materials are indicated in the table below:

Calcium Silicate Insulation

/on-asbestos Calcium Silicate insulation board and pipe insulation feature with light weight0 lowthermal conductiit.0 high temperature and chemical resistance2

• Calcium Silicate thermal conductiit.

Cellular Glass Insulation

Cellular glass insulation is composed of crushed glass combined with a cellulating agent2

These components are mi3ed0 placed in a mold0 and then heated to a temperature of

appro3imatel. 950 o F 2 4uring the heating process0 the crushed glass turns to a li5uid2

4ecomposition of the cellulating agent will cause the mi3ture to e3pand and fill the mold2 Themi3ture creates millions of connected0 uniform0 closed-cells and form at the end a rigid

insulating material2

Cellulose Insulation

Cellulose is made from shredded rec.cled paper0 such as newsprint or cardboard2 It6s treated with

chemicals to ma7e it fire- and insect-resistant0 and is applied as loose-fill or wet-spra.ed through

a machine2

Fiberglass Insulation

*iberglass is the most common t.pe of insulation2 It6s made from molten glass spun intomicrofibers2

Mineral Wool Insulation

Mineral wool is made from molten glass0 stone or slag that is spun into a fiber-li7e structure2Inorganic roc7 or slag are the main components 8t.picall. 98%9 of stone wool2 The remaining

2% organic content is generall. a thermosetting resin binder 8an adhesie9 and a little oil2

Polyurethane insulation

ol.urethane is an organic pol.mer formed b. reacting a pol.ol 8an alcohol with more than two

reactie h.dro3.l groups per molecule9 with a diisoc.anate or a pol.meric isoc.anate in the

presence of suitable catal.sts and addities2

ol.urethanes are fle3ible foams used in mattresses0 chemical-resistant coatings0 adhesies and

sealants0 insulation for buildings and technical applications li7e heat e3changers0 cooling pipes

and much more2

Polystyrene Insulation

ol.st.rene is an e3cellent insulator2 It is manufactured in two wa.s:

• (3trusion - which results in fine0 closed cells0 containing a mi3ture of air and refrigerant

gas

• Molded or e3panded - which produces coarse0 closed cells containing air

(3truded pol.st.rene0 or S0 is a closed-cell0 thermal plastic material manufactured b. a

ariet. of e3trusion processes2 The main applications of e3truded pol.st.rene insulation are in

building insulation and construction in general2

Molded or e3panded pol.st.rene is commonl. called beadboard and has a lower R-alue thane3truded pol.st.rene2

Polyisocyanurate Insulation

ol.isoc.anurate or pol.iso is a thermosetting t.pe of plastic0 closed-cell foam that contains alow-conductiit. gas 8usuall. h.drochlorofluorocarbons or HC*C9 in its cells2
