continuity of supplyContinuity of supply is a need that mustalways be satisfied by electrical installations, along with the protection of life and property. The IT system provides the best guaranteein terms of continuity of supply. Even when afirst insulation fault is present, the installationcan continue to supply power withoutendangering human life. The first fault musthowever be detected and repaired before asecond fault occurs.

Insulation monitoring devices inject a DC orlow-frequency AC voltage between theinstallation and earth. The insulationresistance is determined by measuring theresulting leakage current.c Vigilohm EM9 devices use an indicatorlight to signal the presence of an insulationfault within the installation. They aremodular devices (Multi 9 format) designedfor small installations or sub-systemsisolated from earth;c the TR22A and TR22AH (for hospitals)devices detect insulation faults and, inaddition, continuously indicate the value ofthe insulation resistance on a digital display;c the XM200 is part of the Vigilohm Systemrange and can be associated with automaticfault locating devices.

measuring, indicating andlocating insulation faultsThe insulation monitoring devices of theVigilohm range are designed to:c measure the insulation level of theinstallation;c indicate drops in the insulation levelbelow a user-defined threshold. In addition to these basic functions, theVigilohm System can automatically locatethe faulty circuit.

fault locatingOnce detected, an insulation fault must belocated and eliminated in order to guaranteemaximum continuity of supply.

Automatic locating:For easy locating of insulation faults, theVigilohm System makes it possible tocombine the XM200 insulation monitoringdevice with:c XD301/XD312 fault detectors to monitorthe different circuits of the installation;c XRM receivers for mobile fault locating.

off-line insulationmonitoringThe failure of a motor to start can haveserious consequences. This is especiallytrue in the following applications:c safety equipment (fire pumps, smokeextractors, etc.);c production (glass works, cement plants, etc.);c manufacturing processes (rolling mills,etc.).Motors often fail to start due to insulationproblems caused by the humidity thataccumulates in the microscopic cracks of theinsulation during periods when the motor isnot running. The SM21 device monitors the insulation ofcritical motors while they are off-line.Insulation faults give rise to an alarm ormotor starting lock-out.

choosing an insulation monitoring devicefor different types of installations

device XM200 XM300C

Continuity of supply is the requirement that most oftenleads designers to chose the IT system for an electricalinstallation. This requirement may apply to the entire installation(e.g. chemical process plant, steel plant, etc.).Such an installation requires continuous monitoring ofthe insulation level.

The requirement for continuity of supply may apply toonly a part of an installation, for example a single shopor plant, or a circuit subject to special conditions(safety lighting). In this case, it is recommended to use the IT systemfor this part of the installation, whatever the systemused for general distribution.

In many cases, the use of direct current corresponds toa need for continuity of supply. The use of an ITsystem and insulation monitoring is thereforeconsistent with this choice.

The use of motors in industrial processes creates a furtherneed for insulation monitoring. By checking the insulationwith power off, the presence of insulation faults can bedetermined before starting motors (fire pumps, smokeextractors, etc.). It is also possible to prevent motor startingautomatically if the insulation resistance is below a certainthreshold.

It can be placed at various pointsalong a faulty circuit, capturing the signalemitted by an XM300C or XM200 insulationmonitoring device to determine the exactlocation of the fault.Three current probes are available, theXP15, XP50 and the XP100, for cables withdiameters up to 12, 50 and 100 mmrespectively.

displayThe XRM receiver displays a number from 0to 19, corresponding to the insulation level:c 0: no fault;c 19: solid fault (no insulation).

(1) For the TR22A, the upper limit is extended to this value by adding a P1 subassembly. This is not possible for the TR22AH.(2) Failsafe: the relay is disactivated either on occurrence of a fault or if the auxiliary supply voltage accidentally fails.(3) Locating signal changeover switch: this device identifies the faulty feeder during locating by opening each feeder in turn. When the faulty feeder is opened, the alarm sounds.(4) T2 type tropicalisation:c damp heat: 55 °C, 95 % relative humidity, 28 cycles (as in standard IEC 68-2-30);c salt spray: 5 % NaCl, 48 hours, 3 months storage (as in standard IEC 68-2-11).

presentationThe mobile fault locating kit comes in theform of a case containing:c a locating signal generator, XGR, suppliedwith 220 - 240 V AC;c a locating signal receiver XRM;c three tong-type current probes: XP15,XP50 and XP100.The devices making up the kit and the XGRfor other voltages are all availableindividually.See catalogue number tables.

useThe kit is used on LV IT systems (i.e.installations with an unearthed orimpedance-earthed neutral). It enables faultlocating on:c AC installations 50 to 400 Hz;c DC installations. It is used mainly with insulation monitoringdevices that inject DC currents (TR22A,EM9B or EM9BV, etc.).

operationc the XGR generator injects a 2.5 Hz ACvoltage between the installation and theearth, thereby creating a leakage currentwhich passes through the installationinsulation impedance;c the XRM mobile receiver is associatedwith one of the three tong-type probes,XP15, XP50 or XP100, and detects thisleakage current at 2.5 Hz. It displays a valuebetween 1 and 19 according to the currentpassing through the probe, thus detectingthe leakage current;c three current probes are available, theXP15, XP50 and the XP100, for cables withdiameters up to 12, 50 and 100 mmrespectively. Older probe models are notcompatible with the XRM.

useThe toroids are used to detect the earthleakage currents. They are used with the Vigilohm System forthe detection, locating and measurement ofearth fault currents on IT systems.Closed toroids (type A) are suitable for newinstallations and extensions.Split toroids (type OA) are suitable forrenovated installations and extensions.

functionsThese toroids detect leakage current andtransmit a proportional signal to theassociated receiver.

installation precautionsImmunity to line overcurrentsLine overcurrents, due to motor starting ortransformer energising, may result inunnecessary fault detection by the detector.A number of simple precautions can helpprevent this from happening: when usedtogether they are even more effective:c place the toroid on a straight part of thecable;c carefully centre the cable in the toroid;c use a toroid with a diameter far larger thanthe diameter of the cable (2 x diameter),(figure 1).For severe operating conditions, use of amild steel sleeve placed around the cable, inthe toroid, considerably increases immunity.

Recommended characteristicsc mild steel foil, 1/10 mm thick, to be woundseveral times around the cable in the toroid(at least 1 mm thick);c internal diameter of toroid > 1.4 x externaldiameter of the cable bundle (figure 2);

Connecting conductor sizec cable or bar with a size adapted to thetransformer ratingc cable size in mm2 for a 20 kV/400 Vtransformer.c the connecting conductor should beconsidered to be a protective conductor(PE) and the calculation of its cross-sectional area must satisfy applicableinstallation standards, considering that thispart of the installation is protected byprotective devices located upstream of theMV/LV transformer;c according to standard IEC 364, theformula for the calculation of the of the size

of the PE conductor is: S = √I2t/kwhere S is the cross-sectional area of thePE conductor in mm2,I is the fault current, t is the operating time ofthe protective device and k is a coefficientthat depends on the metal and insulationmaterial used for the conductor.c recommendation: if insulation monitoring isprovided using the Vigilohm System, install atype A toroid on the Cardew earthing circuitin order to monitor operation of the Cardew. The toroid can be connected to an XD301/312 detector.
