Chair‘s ReportElaine Porter, CAIB,CIP

The short months of summer are with us. For many of us it is a time to network and have some fun on the golf course. For some achieving our New Year Resolution goals are in high gear. And for others health & wellness goals are being pursued and achieved.

The CIP Society allows us the opportunity to learn, to network, to catch up on industry developments and to

think about our careers each time we participate in events and seminars. How are we doing putting the pieces together? Are we choosing to just make a living or are we choosing to design our lives?

The Insurance Industry is a great place for each of us to find our place and design a fantastic lifestyle.

In keeping with our high standards of excellence, the Chapter will be saluting our Instructors in the month of July. “The power of Leadership through teaching” is one of the objectives of the Instructor Certification Program. This program specifically prepares an Instructor for Adult Learning within the Insurance Industry. This program will continue to ensure that our candidates are instructed by well trained individuals.

On September 5, 2013, The Kawartha/Durham Chapter along with the Insurance Brokers of Durham Region will be holding our 2nd Annual CIP Society event - a beach volleyball tournament. We are looking forward to another successful day. Please see the website for more details.

On October 15, 2013, The Chapter will host our very first Breakfast event – Ontario Auto- Future Impact on the Insurance Industry with Guest Speaker Mr Ralph Palumbo, Vice President, Ontario, Insurance Bureau of Canada. This will be held at the Ajax Convention Center in Ajax. Make plans to be there.

Let’s continue to empower ourselves as Insurance Professionals. Remember the major key to your better future is YOU. Try to remember that every day you live and think about it. The major key is YOU.

Happy days of summer everyone.

Don’t You Just Love Summer!

For most of us the summer of 2013 started out pretty crummy. Cold, rain, a little glimpse of nice weather and then more cold and rain. Where I live it snowed on Mother’s Day!!! Then, as if on cue, Mother Nature served up some true summer weather just in time for the Insurance Institute July exam session. On Monday July 8, 2013 the GTA experienced a summer storm which threatened and then surpassed the 58 year old record for rainfall and damage held by Hurricane Hazel (October 1954).

The following week I was visiting a friend who lives in one of the areas of Toronto hardest hit by the flooding. As I signaled to turn I was unable to access her street. Not because of the raging river that her roadway was just a few short days ago, but because the street was literally jammed with contractor’s vehicles and waste bins. While this sight in itself was a little daunting, I couldn’t help but think…….Here is the Insurance Industry at work, putting people’s lives back together after a terrible event. I parked my car around the corner and as I was walking down the street everywhere I looked there were contractors working and delivery people hauling materials to worksites.

The task of those of us in the Insurance Industry is complex. Everyone has a role to play in this type of event, whether you are in sales, underwriting or claims.

Those of us in sales have the task of ensuring every client understands the limitations of their policy wordings. In Personal Lines there is no coverage available for damage by outside waters with the exception of Sewer Backup. In Commercial Lines, Flood coverage is also available and it’s our responsibility as insurance professionals to outline the benefits of purchasing these coverages.

Those of us in underwriting have the task of exercising diligence to ensure we are offering coverage with deductibles and pricing relevant to the geographic configuration of the area of risk. I am sure going forward we will see more specific company guidelines from insurers around Flood and Sewer Backup coverages. Until recently flood was something that was an anomaly, now we are told by meteorologists to expect it as a common occurrence.

To those of us in claims – you have the very difficult task of helping the people in a panic – the people who have just witnessed their possessions and treasures being destroyed. You have to maintain a level of calm and compassion when in the back of your mind you are wondering how you are going to cope with literally hundreds of claim files while treating the one you are working on like it’s the ONLY ONE.

As I write this I understand we are in for another round of extreme weather later today. Be careful out there and enjoy the rest of your summer. Remember in less than six months we will be shoveling snow, complaining about the cold weather and of course getting ready for the Insurance Institute December exam session!
