OBJECTIVES
• Explain the function of the intake manifold.• Explain the function of the exhaust manifold.• Describe different type of air cleaners• Explain purpose of heated air inlet system• Explain purpose of electrically heat grid• Describe operation of heat riser valve• Explain Catalytic Converter Operation CBC
AUTOMOTIVE
INTRODUCTION
• Proper combustion requires the engine to “breathe” properly.
• Intake & Exhaust manifolds & Valve train must all work together.
• Determine normal & Abnormal operation of Intake and Exhaust systems
• Auxiliary air preheat systems must function properly.

MANIFOLDS
• Intake• Materials
– Cast Iron– Aluminum– Plastic
• Manifold Types– Single Plane– Dual Plane
• Runner Design
• Exhaust• Materials
– Cast Iron– Steel Tubing– Stainless Steel Tubing
• Manifold Types– Factory cast– Tube Headers
• Runner DesignCBC
AUTO
INTAKE MANIFOLD
• Prevents condensation and assists in vaporization of air fuel mixture
• Runners are Level• Equal runner length and cross section.• Wet or Dry• Inlet temp 100 • Exhaust crossover passage CBC

EXHAUST MANIFOLD
• Made of cast iron, nodular iron, stainless steel or heavy gauge steel.
• Engineered for size, flow, silencing.• A restriction of exhaust gas flow can result in
excessive backpressure.• Proper tuning of the exhaust manifold
(headers) creates a vacuum that assists in air/fuel mixture induction into the cylinder.

EXHAUST MANIFOLD SERVICE
• New Manifolds installed with no gasket
• Don’t remove when hot
• Torque correctly• Use special heat
resistance fasteners

ELECTRIC CATALYTIC CONVERTER
• In development• Found this on the
internet
EXHAUST PIPE
• Made from Stainless steel, zinc-plated• Double wall construction prevents “ringing”• Sealing by:
– Steel composition Gasket/Washer– Ball Shaped flange against exhaust manifold
flange• Fit of Pipe to Muffler or Converter should be
at least 1 1/2 inches.
