Attaining Visibility into Business Operations

Finding the information needed to make sound decisions can be time consuming and costly…

– Complex and diverse data sources

– Manual, inefficient processes (e.g., sifting through reports)

– Difficult to get specific information (complex data queries)

Visibility into operations essential for:

– Making quick, accurate, informed decisions

– Measuring execution against key performance indicators

– Ensuring the accuracy, timeliness and consistency of data for regulatory reporting

Dashboards Provide Business Advantage

Consolidate information, presenting Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in an intuitive, graphical manner

– Improves decision making– Enables transparency in the organization

Deliver actionable information in a timely, dynamic, consistent way– Alerts managers to deviations, averting potential problems– Drives action– Reduces data inaccuracies

Enable monitoring of execution versus performance goals– Focuses teams on key business success items– Facilitates management by exception

Reduce cost of information delivery – Eliminates manual processes (e.g., static reports)

• Data Warehouse – Combined view of all the relevant data a company has in a single location, cleaned and processed into the right formats for analysis.

• OLAP – Analysis of data in a database, generally a data warehouse (data mart, data cube) designed to provide end users a quick way of slicing and dicing the data.

• EAI – Enterprise Application Integration

• BAM – Business Activity Monitoring

• CPM – Corporate Performance Management

• Balanced Scorecard – View the organization from four perspectives, and to develop metrics, collect data and analyze it relative to each of these perspectives: Learning and growth, business process, customer, financial.

What to Look For In a Dashboard Provider

8

04/19/23

Roles - Portals support easy role-based tailoring of dashboards—each person sees THEIR own dashboard.

Multi-level drill down - Drill down not only into reports, but into actual application data to analyze what’s going on.

Collaboration and action - You can not only monitor activity; you can interact with applications, send emails, convene meetings—take action!

Robust Tools - Easy to administer, change, and tailor.

Real-time integration - Portals enable real-time, or near real-time, monitoring of the disparate applications that are running the business.

Adaptive, Role-Based Dashboards

Adaptive, role-based dashboards automatically adapt their structure, presentation, flow, and access rights depending on the role and personal preferences of the user.

Quickly create new roles or modify existing roles on-the-fly

Easily map roles to Portal groups via browser-based administration

BI Vendors - Approach to Portal Integration

In general, Business Intelligence (BI) vendors have difficulty pitching an enterprise portal integration story because:

Most only integrate with portals through the use of iFrames and/or URL’s. This type of integration:

− Doesn’t take advantage of portal features (collaboration, role-based portlets)

− Doesn’t support composite portlets

− Doesn’t support portlet-to-portlet communication (C2A)

BI dashboard viewers may pose a security risk (i.e. Active X controls)

Bowstreet solves these issues by abstracting Portal API’s and enabling native WPS integration

Key Dashboard Requirements

Portal-based implementation

• Rapidly distribute business performance data to a wider audience

• Allow team members to collaborate in real-time

• Provide role-based, secure data access

• Allow business users to easily drill down into application data

“Large companies are increasingly using portal technology for business-critical (composite) applications” - Gartner

“Companies are deploying scorecards and dashboards that communicate key performance indicators directly from operational data sources in addition to data

warehouses and marts.” – AMR Research

Multi-source data integration

• Deliver timely, accurate operational data

• Obtain true visibility into an organization’s health

• Empower decision makers to instantly react to opportunities and threats

Highly configurable Dashboard solutions that provide unprecedented role-based variability and control

– Portlet content/data that is specifically tailored to the diverse user roles and sub communities within large organizations

– Browser-based wizards enable business users to personalize portal applications without IT involvement

– Application Extensions and a separate data services layer enable solutions to easily snap-on to multiple backend data sources

App development tools for rapid deployment and customization

– Rapid deployment using pre-built dashboard components, i.e., tables, charts, drill downs, data filters, alerts

– Enable less-skilled programmers and business analysts to build portlets

– Exponentially lower TCO through better change management

Dashboard Conversation – Questions to Ask

What type of dashboard are you considering, i.e., executive, sales, financial, procurement, compliance, etc?

Do you have a data warehouse? If so, which BI vendors do you work with? Listen for the data sources below:

- Applications – Domino, Siebel, SAP, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards

- Databases - JDBC Compliant database

- BI vendors – Need a web services interface or Java API (Cognos, Business Objects, Hyperion, etc.)

- Legacy – Need a web services interface or Java API

Who needs access to information in the organization? Do the dashboard users belong to different brands, have different roles, work in different geographies, have different access privileges, etc…?

Is all the data in one database, or do you need to pulling information from multiple data sources? If they don’t know, ask if users need to view real-time operational data, as well as historical trend data.

Does your company have a portal infrastructure, or do you have an active project to invest in a portal?

Have you developed dashboard requirements, identified the KPIs, etc? This will help determine project maturity and/or the need for consulting.
