Integrated II Workshop August 28, 2008 Slide 2 Purpose of Integrated II To assist our weaker science students master the high school science benchmarks To help as many of our struggling science students pass the FCAT (to reach proficiency) Our students need to score in Achievement Level 3 or better (to be considered proficient) 324 points represents the lowest Level 3 score which equates to a 65% Slide 3 FCAT Science Achievement Levels FCAT Science Achievement Levels Scale Scores (points possible) Slide 4 FCAT Facts Total points possible on FCAT is 500 Students automatically receive 100 points for writing their name on the test Slide 5 Our Mantra 324 or more!!!!!!! Slide 6 Integrated II As our Integrated II students proficiency numbers increase, so will your schools average science proficiency We need to do our part!! Slide 7 2008 11th Grade FCAT Science Results State average - 38% proficiency District average 39% proficiency What was your schools average science proficiency? Refer to your School FCAT Summary Sheet (in folder) Slide 8 Integrated II Curriculum Our Integrated II curriculum is specifically designed to cover the most important high school science benchmarks. The core Integrated II curriculum is based around the 17 annually assessed science benchmarks. Slide 9 Science FCAT Facts 17 Annually Assessed benchmarks (AA), the other remaining benchmarks are Content Sampled (CS) suppose to be assessed at least once every three years. 60% - 70% of the Grade 11 FCAT Science test is based upon the 17 AA benchmarks. FCAT test questions are grouped into 4 Clusters". Each Cluster is composed of 1 3 Strands. There are 2-5 (AA) Benchmarks per Cluster. FCAT sub scores are reported by Cluster. Each Cluster represents 25% of the students total points. Slide 10 Cluster 1:Physical & Chemical Sciences Strand A: The Nature of Matter Strand B: Energy Strand C: Force and Motion Cluster 2:Earth & Space Sciences Strand D: Processes that Shape the Earth Strand E: Earth and Space FCAT Science Slide 11 4 Reporting Clusters Cluster 3: Life & Environmental Sciences Strand F: Processes of Life Strand G: How Living Things Interact With Their Environment Cluster 4: Scientific Thinking Strand H: The Nature of Science FCAT Science Slide 12 Science Cluster Summary Refer to your schools science cluster summary sheet (in folder) Which cluster(s) indicated an improvement from last year? Which cluster(s) indicated a decline in performance from last year? Slide 13 FCAT Science Achievement Levels FCAT Science Achievement Levels Scale Scores (points possible) Slide 14 Why are Performance tasks important in regards to a students FCAT score? Total points possible on FCAT is 500. Students automatically receive 100 points for writing their name on the test The four performance tasks account for 20% of the 500 points possible (approximately 80 points) Slide 15 12 Performance Task Benchmarks SC.A.1.4.4 AA, SR Cluster I SC.B.1.4.1 AA, SR SC.D.1.4.1 AA, SR SC.D1.4.2 AA, SR SC.D2.4.1 AA, SR Cluster 2 SC.E.1.4.1 AA, SR SC.F.1.4.1 AA, SR SC.F.2.4.3 AA, SR Cluster 3 SC.G.1.4.1 AA, SR SC.G.2.4.2 AA, SR, ER SC.H.1.4.1 AA, SR, ER Cluster 4 SC.H.3.4.2 AA, SR Slide 16 Content Focus for Performance Tasks Short Response Items SC.A.1.4.4 2007 2006 2005 2004 SC.B.1.4.1 2008 SC.D.1.4.2 2006 2004 SC.E.1.4.1 2008 2007 2005 SC.F.1.4.1 2007 SC.H.1.4.1 2008 2006 2005 SC.H.3.4.2 2004 Extended Response Items SC.G.2.4.2 2008 2006 2005 2004 SC.H.1.4.1 2007 Slide 17 Performance Task Analysis Sheet Review Your schools performance task data sheet (in folder) Compare 2008 with 2007 Did your average improve or decline? Slide 18 What can we do to help our students with their performance tasks?????????? Practice, practice, practice!!!!! Tell students that can receive partial credit for answers (do not leave it blank) Tell students that 4 questions are worth 80 points (20% of the test) You need to have your students answer a performance task question each and every week. Which benchmarks should you focus on? Slide 19 Things to do! Give students practice using what they know (explain, draw conclusions, cite evidence, and synthesize) to answer a variety of short and extended response questions. Use open-ended questions that require students to explain their answers orally, through diagrams, and in writing. Teach them that technical writing is different than the style used on FCAT Writing Plus. Slide 20 Slide 21 Cognitive Complexity Low Complexity Test Items Require Recall and recognition Retrieving table or chart information Solving a problem using reference sheet Slide 22 Cognitive Complexity Moderate Complexity Test Items Require: Describing or explaining Comparing and/or contrasting Determining the next step Slide 23 Cognitive Complexity High Complexity Test Items Require: Analyzing Drawing conclusions Generalizing Proposing method for correcting flaws Slide 24 General Specifications for Science FCAT Test questions can be written to measure one benchmark or a combination of benchmarks Test questions are written with reading level approximately one grade level below the grade level of the test Some test questions may require the student to apply previously acquired scientific knowledge from lower grade levels Slide 25 General Specifications for Science FCAT Some test questions will include experimental data, processes, or information for students to analyze in their response Test questions will be designed to present information through written text and/or through visual material, such as graphs, tables, diagrams, maps, models, and/or other illustrations Graphics will be used in at least 40% of the questions. Some graphics will contain information that is necessary for answering the question, while other graphics may only illustrate or support the context of the question Slide 26 11 th Grade Science FCAT Facts Our test will be given March 10 -19, 2009 Consists of two 75 minute sessions given on the same day Slide 27 What Else Can We Do WE? Slide 28 We Can!!!! Cover the content in the provided sequence Conduct the suggested labs in the sequence or related labs of your choosing Practice reading strategies (data indicates that students usually score 20 points lower in science compared to their reading FCAT score) Slide 29 We Can !!!!! Schedule weekly performance tasks Tell your students if they dont pass the FCAT Science test they will have to take another science class next year If you do the exact same thing you did last year you will get the exact same results!!!! Do not worksheet your students You have to do science! Slide 30 We can!!! Work together and share ideas utilize moodle. Utilize FCAT Star to review your students data. Be positive!!! And make the best of the situation!!! Work smarter not harder! Slide 31 What else do you need? $$$$$$$ Time ???? Slide 32 11 th Grade Practice Sets Slide 33 Slide 34 Slide 35 Slide 36 Slide 37 Slide 38 Upcoming Dates October 21, 2008 Biology review lab workshop date??? January 20, 2009 All workshops are scheduled in Rm 119 (Hall Center) from 8 to 3.
