Obtain and sustain top quality raw milk

Better payment schemesMethods based on the traditional plate count method require days of incubation, making bac-terial counts a bottle neck when reporting pay-ment parameters to dairies and farmers. On top of this, increased attention is paid to the lower repeatability and reproducibility of these methods. The BactoScan™ method on the other hand is designed to give you instant and reliable results, with high accuracy, repeatability and repeatabil-ity, so a full set of parameters can be reported faster than ever. This new generation BactoScan™ FC which runs up to 150 samples per hour will make life much easier for you, offering unique precision and accuracy which ensures an even more reliable grading.

Improve on-farm hygieneBacterial contaminations may go undetected for days, due to the time needed with plate count methods, making trouble shooting more difficult for the farmer. But thanks to the unique BactoScan method, reliable results can now be reported quickly, at the next milk collection, or even on-line to the farmer immediately after testing. This has made the BactoScan method a valuable tool for monitoring on-farm hygienic status, and this is one reason why the BactoScan method is used for payment purposes on more than 90 % of all milk within the European Union.

Dairy benefitsSerious contaminations can go undetected right through the dairy production when using tradi-tional methods, so dairies use the rapid and reli-able BactoScan method to monitor incoming raw milk. This in order to reject it or to channel it to the production for which it is best suited. The BactoScan method is the only worldwide recognised method that gives all the time you need to take appropriate action. The longer durability of high-quality raw milk, which can be sustained by the quick BactoScan response to farmers, gives dairies a direct eco-nomic benefit by enabling higher flexibility in collection, transportation and production.

Worldwide recognitionThe BactoScan method has become the industri-al standard for counting bacteria in more than 40 countries and has obtained numerous approvals.Hundreds of BactoScan instruments are in use worldwide, and more than 90 % of all milk with-in the EU is paid for based on BactoScan results.User organisations have seen a drastic improve-ment in milk quality shortly after introducing BactoScan. This development will be further speeded-up by the introduction of the BactoScan FC.

Easier reagent handling!- Reagents are mixed and supplied to the in-

strument in just a few minutes- Measure cold or warm samples without any

pre-treatment- Few or many samples per day - we supply

reagents to suit your needs

With BactoScan™ FC you will: - Be running your first batch within 15 minutes- Finish mixing reagents in 5 minutes- Be able to shut down the instrument in less

than 5 minutes- Get maximum economic benefits by maximis-

ing analysis capacity and minimising operat-ing costs - all compared to traditional meth-ods and earlier BactoScan versions

And running on cold samples allows one opera-tor to handle 2 or 3 instruments, even at 150 samples per hour.Compared to all other alternatives, this means better business for you.

Correct analysis for payment at the lowest possible price!

We asked experienced BactoScan™ 8000 users where they saw major areas of improvement in a new generation BactoScan. The 5 most important points were:• Analytical quality assurance with a stable control sample• Rapid start-up procedure• Flexibility in kit sizes• Low running and service costs• Environmental protectionThese have been major focus areas for improve-ment throughout the development of BactoScan FC.

So now we introduce:Reagent mixing in minutes and increased security- Only one active reagent to be mixed, add the

enzyme to the staining stock solution - and that's it!

- All liquids are filtered by the instrument just before use to avoid contamination from rea-gents

- Filters are replaced in seconds or at service overhauls

Flexibility when purchasing reagentsThe very simple reagent concept allows much more flexibility when purchasing reagents:- All reagents can be supplied in packages for

approx. 25,000 samples (150 samples/hour)- In addition, the enzyme stock solution is sup-

plied in smaller volumes to comply with vary-ing needs

- All reagents are ordered separately This leads to the most competitive analysis sys-tem when compared to earlier BactoScans and in particular to traditional plate count methods.

Environmental protectionBactoScans produce only a minor amount of waste compared to traditional methods. Com-pared to the earlier generations the BactoScan FC will even further reduce the environmental load:- by a 50% reduction in the total amount of

waste per sample- by a 90% reduction in the amount of staining

medium - by an 85% reduction in packing materials

Open the lid, - and find a new world! The cabinet of the BactoScan 8000 was a revolu-tion when it was introduced, easing surveillance and service tremendously. In the BactoScan FC, the „wet“ area with rea-gents and the „dry“ area with the electronics are separated from each other, with two lids for easy access. This means very easy service and mainte-nance, and higher reliability.

FOSS offers an instrument that is easy to main-tain and keep dry and clean, and with the fewer moving parts, you get a robust instrument that does not need daily adjustments.

Modern electronicsAn external PC controls the whole instrument and stores the results automatically. A CD con-tains all software and user documentation and will guide the operator through the use of the instrument.Remote diagnostic facilities will help the op-erator monitor instrument performance on-line together with a „remote“ service engineer when needed.

BactoScan™ FC, a succ ess made even better!

.. but BactoScan FC will count the correct number

which in this case is 12!

.. or 7 if the sample has been

shaken a bit,

With plate count, you may count 3 on

this sample,

The principle: By incubating the milk with a unique incubation liquid and by employing mechanical treatment, all components in the milk are broken down except for the bacteria. The bacteria clusters are also separated into single bacteria.

A very precise syringe is used to pass the whole sample through a flowcell, presenting the bacteria one by one.

The electronics count the pulses and display them in a Pulse Height Analysis diagram on the PC monitor.

At the measuring point, the sample material is exposed to a light beam from a laser source, forcing the stained bacteria to emit red light, - one light pulse for every bacteria passing the beam.

During the incubation period, the bacteria are stained with a DNA-specific staining medium.

Technological innovationThe entire history of the BactoScan is about out-standing technological innovation. And with the BactoScan FC this is again certainly the case. The unique combination of technology and bio-chemistry, combined with optimum data process-ing, makes the BactoScan FC a winner. The new reagent concept, together with the two sample homogenisers, allows the entire sample treatment to take place in the incubation unit, no sample separation is required.A specifically designed flow cell and laser tech-nology are the final elements that allow the Bac-toScan FC to run up to 150 samples per hour!

Instant resultsIn contrast to other traditional methods of bacte-ria counting, the BactoScan counts the bacteria directly, without the need for incubating the sam-ple to grow the bacteria colonies. This, plus a sequence of fully automated opera-tions, lies behind the analysis time of less than 10 minutes, and a total throughput of 150 samples per hour.

Complies well with the reference methodThanks to the high precision and the counting of only viable bacteria, the accuracy of the Bacto-Scan FC is excellent compared to the reference method. The 100% automated BactoScan specifically counts the individual bacteria cells (IBC), of-fering repeatable and robust results. This gives a high accuracy compared to a method which is strongly influenced by the operator and by the number of single bacteria in a bacteria cluster. Experiments have shown large variation in plate count results depending on the treatment of the milk sample on its way to the laboratory.

Unique precisionThe unique reagent concept and a highly efficient stirrer enables direct test of samples - without prior heating or dilution that sets back precision. The fact that BactoScan FC counts bacteria as single cells rather than clusters lifts its repeat-ability to a higher level. And reproducibility is extremely good as well, due to a combination of our careful instrument design, FOSS Quality Control and the Bacterial Control Sample that ensures instrument stand-ardisation worldwide.
