Context

• The Salvation Army Uganda’s SCORE (Sustainable, Comprehensive Response for vulnerable children and their families) Project.

• Based in Mbale, Eastern Uganda • Operating in 6 districts • Part of a 5-year consortium run by AVSI • < December 2015; one-year extension for 2016 • Funded by USAID

Organization Overview

• The Salvation Army (TSA) is a worldwide evangelical church, headquartered in London and with a presence in 127 countries.

• It has served the poor via its local “corps” (church and social service centers) throughout its 150-year history.

• The Salvation Army World Service Office (SAWSO) helps TSA territories identify needs and facilitates US resources to meet them.

• In 2014, SAWSO partnered with TSA in 62 countries.

Framework of Integration (Context and Rationale for Adding Community-based Family Planning)

• FP services requested by SCORE Project staff & beneficiaries • High fertility and large family size in service area • District (government) health personnel supportive • Existing network of health centers , but

• limited availability of FP commodities • Existing volunteer village health teams (VHTs) , but

• VHT members generally not trained in FP • Limited understanding & uptake of family planning • Openness to “healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies”
