Context

• The Salvation Army Uganda’s SCORE (Sustainable, Comprehensive Response for vulnerable children and their families) Project.

• Based in Mbale, Eastern Uganda • Operating in 6 districts • Part of a 5-year consortium run by AVSI • < December 2015; one-year extension for 2016 • Funded by USAID

Organization Overview

• The Salvation Army (TSA) is a worldwide evangelical church, headquartered in London and with a presence in 127 countries.

• It has served the poor via its local “corps” (church and social service centers) throughout its 150-year history.

• The Salvation Army World Service Office (SAWSO) helps TSA territories identify needs and facilitates US resources to meet them.

• In 2014, SAWSO partnered with TSA in 62 countries.

• VHT members generally not trained in FP • Limited understanding & uptake of family planning • Openness to “healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies”

SAIFaP (Salvation Army Integrated Family Planning)

• Mbale based. 2-year project began May 2014 • Objectives

• Increase access to FP services • Increase knowledge of and interest in FP • Improve the quality of FP services

• Main activities • Service mapping and linkages with health centers • Training of VHTs and youth peer & ASRH educators • Male, community and church leader engagement • Home-based care & mobile outreach, with HC referrals

Results to Date

• 378 VHT members trained on FP and deployed • 375 youth peer educators, 65 teachers/ASRH mentors active • 83 male volunteer mentors engaged and trained • 130 Salvation Army officers and cadets trained on FP • Seven outreaches/quarter being conducted • Quarterly stakeholder and monthly coordination meetings • Engagement in national FP events
