Catherine Powers-James, PhD, joined the Integrative Medicine Center as a psychologist to help with stress management and healthy behavior change in the area of diet and exercise. She graduated with her doctorate in clinical health psychology and behavioral medicine from The University of North Texas and completed her fellowship at the Houston Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where she specialized in treating medical patients, specifically working with oncology Veterans. Find out how you can benefit from an appointment with Dr. Powers-James.

Tell us a little about yourself.Dr. Powers-James: For the past eight years, I have provided therapy to medical populations. Due to my passion for working with oncology patients, I was attracted to MD Anderson Cancer Center. MD Anderson understands that cancer is not just a physical disease, but a disease that affects many, if not all, aspects of a person’s life.

What can patients expect during a consultation with you?The consultation is a time where I learn more about who the patient is, and I also hope to answer any questions they may have about me or the psychology service process. During the initial session, the patient is interviewing me just as much as I am interviewing them. The therapeutic relationship is crucial to the intervention, and it is important for patients to connect with me. This is also an opportunity to collaboratively discuss the patient’s goals and develop a treatment plan. Each appointment thereafter is tailored to the specific needs of the patient.

What are some recent studies related to the effects of psychology on oncology patients? The literature shows significant positive impacts of psychology services with oncology patients. For example, research suggests psychological interventions help oncology patients reduce depression and anxiety1, improve hormone and immune regulation, and other health benefits1, as well as perhaps improving survival3. Fish et al.’s (2013) research indicates that such interventions may improve quality of life, including spiritual well-being and functional well-being. Other studies also have shown that interventions may improve fatigue and sleep4 and pain management5.

Psychology ServiceHealth Psychology may be beneficial to patients experiencing psychosocial distress or who wish to work on lifestyle changes. A licensed clinical psychologist will provide both evaluation and interventions to address symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression and help you with your lifestyle changes.

Q&A continued from page 1

What types of interventions do you use? Each patient’s situation is unique; therefore approaches and goals are individualized to achieve their goals.

Types of interventions may include:• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):

Teaches patients to improve their thoughts, behaviors, and feelings.

• Motivational Interviewing: Helpful when patients want to work on behavioral change, such as improving their diet or physical activity.

• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Allows patients to notice and become aware of their experiences, while using accep-tance and mindfulness strategies to increase psychological flexibility.

• Interpersonal Therapy: Helps patients improve their relationships.

• Mindfulness-based treatment: Teaches patients to non-judgmentally focus their attention on their present experience, while observing and accepting this experience.

• Biofeedback: Allows patients to gain awareness and control over some physiological responses by using equipment that provides feedback of the body and teaches patients to manipulate these responses.

Who is a good candidate? Anyone who wants to improve their overall well-being and quality of life, wants to work on lifestyle changes or is experiencing psychosocial distress. Therapy is a great place for people to express their thoughts and feelings. Although I cannot “fix” problems, I can help them process their experiences and gain more understanding and clarity. We can work together to form a plan of action, but it is work and therapy may be the first step.

Additional areas covered by other psychologists at MD Anderson include pain, female sexual health, smoking cessation, body image, supportive care, social work, psychiatry and pediatrics.
