The Sportsperson of the Year Awards is the largest sports awards franchise globally. Since its inception in 1954, Sports Illustrated magazine has annually presented the Sportsperson of the Year award to the athlete or team whose performance that year most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement. The awards have honoured some of the most celebrated icons of sport. The larger purpose is to recognise talent and performances that propel the nation's sporting community to greatness and help take sports to all sections of the society. Sports Illustrated is committed to making India an even greater sporting nation.

“MY PERSONAL STYLE IS ALL ABOUT comfort. I can carry anything that I feel comfortable in.” Sure enough, this young cricketer has been grab-bing eyeballs for being so effort-lessly put-together. There’s a reason why it’s hard to resist this 24-year-old’s charm. With over two million followers on Instagram, it’s evident that there’s more to Pandya than just his stellar abilities on the fi eld.

“I don’t follow anyone else’s trends nor do I think that I have one particular style. I can don a three-piece suit as well as shorts and a tee with the same fl air,” he remarks confi dently when ques-tioned about his style. Pandya’s outfi ts have a very hip-hop artiste/rapper-inspired vibe and he loves

SANIA MIRZA WAS PERHAPS INDIA’S fi rst female sportsperson who became a style icon, owing to her fi ne form on the tennis court. While Mirza might have just released her biography, Ace against Odds, there is no denying that when it comes to fashion, she has served consecutive aces. Whether it’s her sporty-yet-chic tennis attire or her elegant couture creations, Mirza is fashion’s favourite sportswoman. One can easily mistake her for a movie star when she’s seen walking the ramp or as a guest on a televi-sion talk show. No matter what she wears, there is always a grace to it and she loves shopping for herself. “The joke in the family is that even if I don’t come back with a trophy, I’ll defi nitely come back with a new pair of shoes,” she once said.

Fighting misogyny from the very start, Mirza has dealt with a lot of criticism for her sartorial choices from the moral and religious brigade, only to emerge stronger and more confi dent of herself. “For me, as a woman, it comes from the belief that you belong there, that you are equal, that all the opportu-nities available to anyone else in the world are for you too,” she has said. Nothing can stop this tennis mav-erick from winning titles as well as the hearts of millions of people across the globe. Her style, as they say, is always on point.

THAT BHAICHUNG BHUTIA IS THE reason Indian football has risen to what it is today is indisputable. But what really makes him cool is how he has always stood for things he feels strongly about. He exudes a passion that makes him a good footballer, an amazing dancer (who would’ve thought!) and a spirited role model for young football aspir-ants all over the country.

“I don’t necessarily consider myself a guy who tries too hard to be stylish, but I do keep myself up-dated with the latest fashion trends. I like to dress for the occasion, and I prefer to be understated,” says the 40-year-old former India for-ward, who's our pick for the style legend award.

“My personal style is all about comfort. I need to be comfortable in what I’m wearing and I choose

clothes that make me feel confi -dent, while putting me at ease,” he continues. Naming David Beckham as his style icon, Bhutia has always set trends with his hairstyles as well as the crisp suits he so effort-lessly sports. “I really can’t say much about fashion or what to wear, because I try to ensure I am appropriately dressed. But I think it comes from where you are—be the best at whatever you do and you will automatically stand out. That’s as true for fashion as it is for life.” We couldn’t agree more.

BREAKING INTO THE TOP 20 OF THE BWF World Ranking at the age of 17 does come at a price. Pusarla Venka-ta Sindhu found herself thrust into the limelight at a very young age and this simple badminton player from Hyderabad suddenly had the entire country’s hopes and dreams resting on her shoulders. Her silver medal in the women’s singles at the 2016 Summer Olympics made her the fi rst Indian shuttler to reach the fi nal of an Olympics badminton tournament and the youngest Indian to make the podium in an individual event at the Olympics.

Her quiet and shy demeanour is pretty evident when she faces the camera. However, her confi dence and determination are hard to miss even when she’s dolled-up in de-signer wear for a shoot or the ramp. Being the poster girl of Indian bad-minton has its pros and cons. And it’s refreshing to see her taking up fashion as yet another challenge by showing the world she can look as ethereal in a silk saree as she can in a red carpet gown. Oh, and just FYI, she was also the Sports Illustrated India Sportsperson of The Year in 2017. She really can do it all.

Pandya attributes his super-fi t self to a rigorous training rou-tine and a balanced lifestyle. He emphasises how important it is to eat right to remain fi t and claims that you’ll never see him binging on junk food. If there’s one thing that defi nes Pandya’s current look, it’s his hair. Working with hairstyl-ist Aalim Hakim, Pandya says he likes to try new things and experi-ment with different styles without caring about what others think or say. “I haven’t been inspired by any one single person specifi cally but, throughout the world of sports, you’ll fi nd sportsmen with various styles that they have aced. I seldom get the time but, then, there are a

few products that I use on a regular basis to keep my hair in good condi-tion,” says Pandya.

Today, style has invariably be-come an important part of a sport-sperson’s life and Pandya doesn’t seem to mind it one bit. “Style has always excited me. I believe the most stylish part is when you’re comfortable wearing what you are. It shouldn’t take a lot of effort to look stylish. I’m often perceived as fl amboyant but I just pick up the fi rst thing that comes to hand and wear it!

“Everybody is conscious at some point or other, but my personal style has surely evolved over the years. I still watch myself before the mirror or have my brother, Krunal, pass a comment on how I’m dressed.” And this is just the start. Pandya has a long and promising career ahead of him, and his evolution as a cricketer as well as a fashion icon is some-thing to keep an eye on.

THERE’S A REASON WHY HIS TEAMMATES FONDLY refer to him as ‘Captain Cool.’ There’s an unmis-takable calmness about Mahendra Singh Dhoni when he’s on the fi eld. Despite the Herculean task of juggling the hopes of millions of Indians and the performance of his team, Dhoni has never failed to deliver. And even in the face of defeat, he has been gracious and poised, something that percolates into his personal style as well.

Dhoni’s style evolution has indeed been a drastic one. From his straight, long hair to a cleaner buzz-cut, it has been refreshing to see the maestro simplify and refi ne his wardrobe while not being overtly trend-conscious.

With Mahi, comfort and functionality are key when it comes to personal style, which is why it was a pleasant surprise to see him don a Shantanu & Nikhil military-inspired bandhgala-suit for the premiere of his biopic. The man sure is full of surprises, on and off the fi eld.

THIS 6’1’’ GOLFER COULD WELL have been a model with her stunning features and endless legs, but she’s striven hard to make a name in the world of golf. From representing India at the Asian Games (Doha 2006) and the Asia-Pacifi c Junior Golf Tournament, to being the youngest woman golfer to win the All-India Ladies Amateur Championship in 2007–08 along with winning seven Open Amateur Tournaments, she is known to leave quite an impression wherever she goes. A fi tness enthusiast, Nicollet’s personal style is synonymous with shorts and stylish golfer tees that she carries with ease.

Whether it is something as basic as sweatpants and a sports bra or a dressy LBD, she brings her own sporty fl air to anything she wears. She loves

experimenting with her hair; from fi ery red streaks to sleek bangs, everything adds to her spunk and makes this 26-year-old from Bengaluru a style icon, while being one of India’s fi nest women golfers.

THE MASTER BLASTER, THE man who has carried the dreams of a billion people on his shoulders, is easily one of the greatest sportspersons in the world.

Off the fi eld, Sachin Tendulkar has always had a rather simple dressing sense. Anything he decides to wear goes well with the curly hair and the million-dollar smile. Sachin has jumped head-fi rst into the menswear space with

arena and is the only Indian to have held both the world and Olympic titles at the same time. Abhinav Bindra made India proud when he won the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Not many know that this stylish shooter holds a B.B.A. degree from the University of Colorado and has, since retirement, become the brand am-bassador and chief mentor of the Times & Trends Academy. He also has a venture fund called Shooting Star, which has recently funded New Delhi-based Fitpass. He is always a natty dresser, and wears a suit like a professional model would.

the launch of his own fashion label, True Blue. Clearly, after establishing himself as a global sporting icon, Tendulkar is well on his way to establishing himself as a fashion icon too. And we’re defi nitely not complaining!

THE CAPTAIN OF THE INDIAN WOMEN’S cricket team needs no introduction. Even when she isn’t playing, her strong and stun-ning persona is evident when she faces the camera or the fashion police at events. Her latest shoot for a magazine cover grabbed many eyeballs, as she posed like a pro with some of India’s biggest movie stars.

“WALKING THE RAMP IS EASIER THAN BOXING!” HE ONCE famously said. And why shouldn’t it be, with the bone structure and striking good looks that Vijender Singh possesses. Be it a sherwani or a three-piece suit, he makes any outfi t look good effortlessly. This talented boxer even made his Bollywood debut with Fugly, showing us that there’s more to him than just boxing.

Post his 2008 Olympic bronze medal, Vijender put the otherwise latent sport in the limelight and made it a talking point in the country with the overwhelming media coverage he garnered. He made the most of it. From being the showstopper at Fashion Weeks to cover shoots for magazines, he became a fashion favourite—bringing the right mix of contemporary and earthy appeal. Being the reigning WBO Asia-Pacifi c Super Middleweight champion and WBO Oriental Super Middleweight champion, Vijender makes it clear that he’s a force to reckon with inside the ring, while outside it he accomplishes everything with fl air.

“I DIDN’T THINK MY MOUSTACHE would be a style statement,” says Shikhar Dhawan, popularly known as Gabbar among his teammates because of his moustache. After smashing the fastest debut century in Test cricket, Dhawan’s graph has only gone upwards and this year has seen him hit a rich vein of form. From being an ace cricketer to a style icon for the younger generation across sports and pop culture, the opener from Delhi has also posed for many leading maga-zines, among other things. He has a list of high-profi le endorsements to boast of as well.

In the recently concluded series against Sri Lanka, Dhawan scored two centuries on his way to amassing 358 runs and being named the Player of the Series. His quirky sartorial choices have made him one of the most sought-after faces in Indian cricket from a style point of view, and Dhawan just keeps becoming more stylish with each passing day.
