    INTENSIVE 4: A VISIT TO A DISCOTo make your way (to / towards sth) to move or get somewhere; to make

    progress:

    Will you be able to make your own way to the airport (= get there without

    help, a ride, etc.)? Is this your plan for making your way in the world?

    To push sb with your elbow, usually in order to get past them:

    She elbowed me out of the way to get to the front of the line. He elbowed

    his way through the crowd.

    To pick your way (across, along, among, over, through sth) to walk carefully,

    choosing the safest, driest, etc. place to put your feet: She picked her way

    delicately over the rough ground.

    To move or make sth move slowly and carefully in a particular direction: [V]

    She moved forward, inching towards the rope. [VN] I inched the car

    forward. He inched his way through the narrow passage.

    To tuck:

    1 To push, fold or turn the ends or edges of clothes, paper, etc. so that they

    are held in place or look neat: She tucked up her skirt and waded into the

    river. The sheets should be tucked in neatly (= around the bed). Tuck the

    flap of the envelope in.

    2 To put sth into a small space, especially to hide it or keep it safe or

    comfortable:

    She tucked her hair (up) under her cap. He sat with his legs tucked up under

    him. The letter had been tucked under a pile of papers.

    3 To cover sb with sth so that they are warm and comfortable: She tucked a

    blanket around his legs.

    Tuck sthaway

    1 (Be tucked away) To be situated in a quiet place, where not many people go:

    The shop is tucked away down a backstreet.2 To hide sth somewhere or keep it in a safe place: She kept his letters

    tucked away in a drawer. They have thousands of pounds tucked away in a

    savings account.

    Gingerly: In a careful way, because you are afraid of being hurt, of making a

    noise, etc:

    He opened the box gingerly and looked inside.

    Loom: To appear as a large shape that is not clear, especially in a frightening

    or threatening way: A dark shape loomed up ahead of us.

    2 To appear important or threatening and likely to happen soon: Food

    shortages loom in some parts of Africa.

    To loom large to be worrying or frightening and seem hard to avoid: The

    prospect of war loomed large.

    Flicker:

    Throb:

    Pounding: A very loud repeated noise, such as the sound of sth hitting sth

    Assault:

    Weave: (weaved, weaved) [+adv./prep.] to move along by running and changing

    direction continuously to avoid things that are in your way:[V] She was weaving in and out of the traffic. He hurried on, weaving through

    the crowd. The road weaves through a range of hills. [VN] He had to weave

    his way through the milling crowds.

    Gloomy:

    1 Nearly dark, or badly lit in a way that makes you feel sad:

    a gloomy room / atmosphere It was a wet and gloomy day.

    2 Sad and without hope: A gloomy expression We sat in gloomy silence.

    3 Without much hope of success or happiness in the future: A gloomy picture

    of the countrys economic future Suddenly, the future didnt look so gloomyafter all.

    Beam: Line of light

    Beams of light / sunlight the beam of a torch / flashlight a laser / electron

    beam (BrE) The approaching cars headlights were on full beam (= shining as

    brightly as possible and not directed downwards). (AmE) a car with its high

    beams on.

    Dingy: Dark and dirty: Adingy room / hotel dingy curtains / clothes.

    Bustling: (with sth) full of people moving about in a busy way:

    a bustling city / port The market was bustling with life.

    Drone: [usually sing.] a continuous low noise:

    the distant drone of traffic He spoke in a low drone.

    Scurry: To run with quick short steps (SYN SCUTTLE)

    She said goodbye and scurried back to work. Ants scurried around the pile of

    rotting food. The shots sent everyone scurrying for cover.

    Blaze: To shine brightly:

    The sun blazed down from a clear blue sky. The garden blazed with colour.
