In 2015 the World Business Forum will present two days of powerful stories; of individuals who face shocks - both personal and organizational - and who use those shocks to achieve the extraordinary.

Listen to experts of the business world recount the moments they had to make life-changing decisions, created success out of failure and used their aspirations to drive their current success.

Each story will have its own unique characteristics; its own particular energy; its “aha” moments; its moments of tension; its moments of stimulation; its moments of reflection; its moments of learning.

Can they inspire you to become a Story Maker?

Jim CollinsGreatness in Turbulent Times

Jim Collins began his research and teaching career on the faculty at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1992. But instead of taking a traditional career path in academia, Collins began researching a question of particular personal interest - how some leaders build companies that remain visionary for generations, which became the basis of his 1994 bestseller Built to Last.

The success of Built to Last allowed Collins to set up his own management laboratory in Boulder Colorado, and in 2001 he published his second hit Good to Great.

Collins has gone on to publish further bestsellers including How the Mighty Fall, and most recently, Great by Choice. In addition to his work in the business sector, Collins has passion for learning and teaching in the social sectors, including education, healthcare, government, faith-based organizations, social ventures, and cause-driven non-profits. He is also an avid and highly accomplished rock climber, completing one-day ascents of the north face of Half Dome and the 3,000 foot south face of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley.

Kevin SpaceyOn Taking the Path Less Traveled

One of the most talented actors of his generation, Kevin Spacey’s career has been built on a willingness to take a risk and a keen eye for spotting opportunity in the unconventional. He has received numerous awards for his compelling portrayals of complex, layered and at times dark characters, including two Academy Awards for his roles in The Usual Suspects and American Beauty.

Spacey’s work has also taken him far beyond Hollywood. Since 2003 he has worked as Artistic Director of the Old Vic, in the process transforming the fortunes of one of London’s oldest theaters. In 2010 he was named honorary Commander of the British Empire in recognition of his work with the theater, receiving the award from Prince Charles.

One of the biggest lessons that Spacey learned from his mentor Jack Lemmon was that “no matter how successful you are, always send the elevator back down.” In this spirit, he founded the Kevin Spacey Foundation which aims to train, support and mentor emerging artists in the performing arts and film. Spacey is also the founder and head of the film production company Trigger Street Productions, whose credits include Captain Phillips, The Social Network and the Emmy award-winning House of Cards, the groundbreaking series that is leading the way in innovating new distribution models for film and television.

Oscar FarinettiEataly: A Seven Step Recipe for Success

With a focus on high quality, locally sourced products, Eataly stores are a combination of restaurant and retail experiences, brought together in spaces inspired by traditional European food markets.

Having opened his flagship 30,000 square feet store in Turin, Oscar Farinetti’s first New York store opened in 2010, and an even larger store was opened in Chicago in 2013. Having enjoyed spectacular success, plans are now underway for a second New York store as well as stores in London, Hong Kong, Moscow, Munich, Paris, São Paulo, Sydney, and Toronto, among other cities. These will complement the 15 established Eataly outposts in Italy and 11 in Japan.

Before starting Eataly, Farinetti ran UniEuro, a retail business started by his father which he transformed into one of the largest electronics retailers in Italy. Between 1978 and 2003 Farinetti opened 150 UniEuro stores before selling the company and focusing his attentions on Eataly. Since 2008 Farinetti has been Chairman of Eataly and also Managing Director of wine producer Fontanafredda. Farinetti attended the University of Turin, studying Economics and Business, leaving to immediately start a career in the family business.

Mark BertoliniAetna: Lessons in Leadership from a Healthcare Pioneer

Mark Bertolini’s approach to leading one of America’s largest companies has been profoundly shaped by his own personal experiences. His vision for a better form of healthcare in the US was formed out of his experience accompanying his son as he underwent treatment for what was diagnosed as terminal cancer in 2001. The complexity of the system made him think a better way must be possible. Bertolini himself also suffered a severe ski accident which left him disabled for a year and from which he continues to suffer near constant pain. His recovery led him to explore alternative treatments such as meditation and yoga, practices which have since been incorporated into Aetna’s corporate life as a means to reduce stress and staff turnover.

In another example of Bertolini’s humanist approach to leadership, he hit the headlines earlier this year after taking the decision to rise the base pay of all its employees to $16 USD an hour, sparking a debate around the hard and soft benefits that come with wage and benefit increases. Bertolini’s career at Aetna began in 2003 when he joined as head of the company’s Specialty Products. In 2007 he was named president, responsible for all of Aetna’s businesses and operations across the company. In 2013 the company generated revenues of over $47 billion. Prior to joining Aetna, Bertolini held executive positions at Cigna, NYLCare Health Plans, and SelectCare, Inc., where he served as president and Chief Executive Officer.

Adam GrantGive and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success

At just 33 years old, Adam Grant is already one of today’s most influential social scientists. With a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology - which he earned in just three years - he has authored more than 60 publications in leading management and psychology journals. His 2013 book Give and Take looks at how success today is increasingly dependent on how we interact with others rather than on individual drivers of success such as passion, hard work, talent, and luck. It turns out that givers - people who contribute to others without expecting anything in return - are much more likely to achieve extraordinary results across a wide range of industries.

Give and Take combines cutting-edge evidence with captivating stories and was named one of the best books of 2013 by Amazon, Apple, The Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal. Grant’s speaking and consulting clients include Google, Merck, Goldman Sachs, Pixar, Facebook and Johnson & Johnson, and his work has been highlighted in books by bestselling authors such as Dan Pink, Arianna Huffington and Malcolm Gladwell. Before entering academia, Grant was a record-setting advertising director at Let’s Go Publications, an All-American springboard diver, and a professional magician.

George KohlrieserLeadership as a Calling: Creating a Story of Inspiration, Passion and Purpose

George Kohlrieser started his career working side-by-side with the police department on the streets of Dayton, Ohio, trying to reduce homicides in domestic violence situations. During those years he was held hostage himself four times. In 1972 he started to teach at the Dayton Police Academy, establishing hostage negotiation teams. At the same time he worked in a psychiatric hospital, teaching mental health specialists how to work with chronic schizophrenics. These roles early in his career led him to his deep conviction in the power of emotional bonding and what it can accomplish.

Over the years he worked with the police, the military and humanitarian organizations in such hot spots as Israel, the Palestinian territories and Croatia, as well as with police departments and police academies around the world. Later he expanded from the world of clinical psychology and crisis negotiation into the world of executive education and corporate leadership training, founding the flagship High Performance Leadership (HPL) program at IMD. His book Hostage at the Table is an international bestseller, translated into 11 languages and in 2012 he published his most recent book Care to Dare: Unleashing Astonishing Potential Through Secure Base Leadership.
