WHY: It is the cement that supports all other pillars of instruction: direct explicit

instruction, guided reading, strategy groups, independent reading and shared

reading. It builds a foundation upon which all other instruction rests.

PURPOSE: Engages students in conversations surrounding big ideas in text that

leave us pondering and questioning the things that matter.

BUT WAIT—THERE’S SO MUCH MORE:

Planning an Interactive Read Aloud with Purposeful Talk:

From: My Name is Jorge on Both Sides of the River

By Jane Medina

Invisible

If I stay very still

And breathe

very quietly,

The magic happens:

I disappear

-and nobody sees me

-and nobody hears me

-and nobody even thinks about me

And the teacher won’t call on me.

It’s very safe

being invisible

I’m perfect!

I can’t make mistakes

at least

nobody sees them,

so nobody laughs.

Give Them a Little Substance

Move beyond the obvious

Imagine possible interpretations

Plan through lenses for critical thinking and analysis

Embrace the unanswerable

Consider the symbiotic relationship between content and conversation

Essential Questions:

Stimulate thought, not looking for an answer

Room for a variety of interpretations or ways of responding

Questions may launch a conversation or debate

Encourage flexibility in thinking, - revising and reconstructing

ideas based in input of others

Grappling with ideas that allow us to meaning in our own life

experiences

Fabulous information on the traits of essential questions and examples of

questions for each grade level span:

Chapter Ten of Jamie McKenzie's new book, Learning to Question to

Wonder to Learn: http://questioning.org/mar05/essential.html

ESSENTIAL QUESTION IDEAS TO USE IN

MY CLASSROOM:

Supporting Student Purposeful Talk:

Use of Talk Stems and Co-created anchor charts outlining the

procedures for purposeful talk:

Examples:

http://mrsriosteachessecondgrade.blogspot.com/

note: This chart and smart talk stems on the next

page have great ideas but would be even more

effective if co-created with the students; written

in teacher and/or student writing.

INTERACTIVE READ ALOUD WITH PURPOSEFUL TALK LESSON PLAN

Text Title and Author:

Type of Text: __________________ Citation for Text: Deeper meaning in text: (Big ideas, theme, and/or critical understanding children should construct.)

Unanswerable Questions: (should be open-ended, opinion question based on the deeper meaning in the text as listed above. These questions are not tied directly to the text but rather to the big ideas/understandings in the text. The students then use evidence from the text to support their opinions.)

New Illinois Learning Standard:

Standard written in student friendly objective:

Stopping Place

Page #

Questions or Think Alouds

Mode (Think Aloud, Turn & Talk,

or Conversation)

Reason for Stopping (examples but

not limited to: highlight vocabulary, back up and reread, question the text, create a mental picture, reread to answer a previous question, ponder, explain, predict, use schema, infer, determine the most important information or the main idea, examine the author's purpose, model fix up strategies, synthesize information)

Book Intro.:

Second Read Aloud Focus: (when you read it again- what will be the focus such as another big

idea, comparing with another piece of text or a specific reading strategy)

Ideas for use of book during reading and/or writing mini-lessons: "I can use this

book to model the reading and/or writing strategy of… because…"
