WHY: It is the cement that supports all other pillars of instruction: direct explicit

instruction, guided reading, strategy groups, independent reading and shared

reading. It builds a foundation upon which all other instruction rests.

PURPOSE: Engages students in conversations surrounding big ideas in text that

leave us pondering and questioning the things that matter.

Planning an Interactive Read Aloud with Purposeful Talk:

Invisible

If I stay very still

And breathe

very quietly,

The magic happens:

I disappear

-and nobody sees me

-and nobody hears me

-and nobody even thinks about me

And the teacher won’t call on me.

Give Them a Little Substance

Move beyond the obvious

Imagine possible interpretations

Plan through lenses for critical thinking and analysis

Embrace the unanswerable

Consider the symbiotic relationship between content and conversation

Room for a variety of interpretations or ways of responding

Questions may launch a conversation or debate
