'Tailit' - Motoring Safety Device
achievements
1996
While at High School I designed and built ‘Tailit’ - a solution to a common motoring problem. Won several competitions including ‘Young Electronic Designer’ and ‘Young Engineer for Britain’ in 1995. Now patented. Appeared on ‘Eureka!’ TV programme.
'Soundz' - Interactive Digital Music Retail System
relevant projects
2001
University final year project. 'Soundz' is a 'next generation’ RIA for exploring and purchasing music using a digital interface in a high street retail environment. An intuitive user interface allows users to browse, search, listen to, compile and buy music. Fundamental to the success of the project was considerable use of usability techniques such as user & scenario analysis, wireframing, prototyping and user testing. The finished project delivered a stimulating and empowering experience for all levels of user ability. I was responsible for the whole project from conception, through design, testing and development.
hobbies & interests
I am a keen mountain biker, hill walker and snowboarder. I also have a great passion for food and cooking, recently spending 9 months in Italy & Spain working on organic farms to learn regional cooking skills and improve my knowledge of agriculture and organic food production.

NHS Go was a huge project to give every
member of NHS staff a single point of
access to all of the information, web
resources and online tools they require to
perform their job. Using a highly
customisable widget based interface
similar to iGoogle or myYahoo!, the NHS
Go RIA pulls content from a variety of web
resources and allows the user to query
website, perform searches and SSO (single
sign on) without having to leave the NHS GO
platform. Currently NHS staff have a huge
variety of web resources which they must
visit, and NHS GO provides a single point
where they can perform a variety of actions.
I was responsible for designing and
optimising the interactions within each
widget to maximise the user experience
initially by ensuring consistency in
function, and also through user testing
and improvement.
I also redesigned the interactions within
the search functionality to improve
usability, and redesigned the how the user
could have a multiple pages of widgets,
again to improve user performance.

Issues:
Maintaining behavioral consistency •
within widgets that provide content
from differing 3rd parties. Solved with
iterative design and ad-hoc user
testing and close communication with
the development team to deliver the
optimum solution.
Redesigning the functionality to •
provide multiple dashboards of
widgets. Originally used a
renameable tabbed system, but user
testing showed this was too
complicated. Redeveloped the
functionality to use simple '1,2,3' tabs
at top right of the dashboard.

I worked on a number of projects for the
Students Loan Company. The largest was an
online student finance calculator accessed
through the Directgov web site. This tool
allowed a prospective student to enter their
personal circumstances including domicile
status, parental income, choices of course/
university etc and then to receive an
accurate calculation of their student finance
entitlement. The tool was designed and
produced to strict Directgov branding using
their transactional toolkit.
From functional specifications I created
user friendly designs and interactions
using storyboards, sitemaps, wireframes
and lo-fi prototypes. Once approved I hand
coded the designs into standards
compliant XHTML, CSS and JQuery to be
passed to the development team. I was
also responsible for maintaining
documentation and using version control
software to check in/out files.
Also I produced a library of design
patterns as HTML/CSS/JQuery with
documented instructions to assist the
development team to effectively develop
web standards compliant solutions.

Issues:
Initially UI/UX design was done •
concurrently with development within
sprint. This proved difficult, so UI/UX
was run 1 sprint ahead
of developement.
Designing to the strict Directgov toolkit •
was problematic as there was not 'out
of the box' functionality available to
solve certain problems. Required
regular dialogue with Directgov to
create, refine and approve non-toolkit
functionality.
Creating a solution to allow complex •
data tables to be displayed
satisfactorily on a range of monitor
sizes, down to 800x600px.

PRIMARY PERSONA: ORGANISED FOOD LOVER
FRANCES WRIGHT, 33 from LondonJob: Charity Fund raiser.Household profile: Lives with long term partner in top floor 2 bed flat.Loves: Kick boxing, going to the Cinema, getting out to the country.Hates: Being hungry! Celebrity magazines, reality TV shows, parsnips.Dietary requirements: None, but would like to eat more fish.Technology: Competent, uses computer daily. iPod and Sony W884 phone. Will swap to use an iPhone or similar when contract is due for renewal.
Fran is a 33 year old living in a 2 bedroom flat in North London. She lives with her long-term partner, Tom, and works as a charity fundraising manager for a national charity. Fran describes herself as a food lover and enjoys to eat well.
She is an enthusiastic cook and enjoys preparing food. In a typical day she will leave the house at 7.30am and take the tube to work which is a journey of 45 minutes. Her job is generally very busy and she usually eats a home-made lunch at her desk. She finishes work before 6 and usually returns home for 7pm. On her route home she passes a Tesco express store where she often buys items for dinner if needed.
Fran likes to cook in the evening after work, and shares this duty with her partner Tom who will cook every other or second night. They take it in turns to make the lunch for the next day. Tom enjoys cooking too, but relies on Fran’s help sometimes and would like to become a better cook.
Primary Scenario
Fran spends up to 2 hours on a Saturday morning creating a rough menu plan for the coming week. Firstly she checks her fridge and cupboards to see what needs used up. Next she looks through her cookery books and the internet to find recipes that she is inspired by or that use up the left over ingredients. She then writes the ingredients out and uses this as a basis for the weekly shopping list. By creating this detailed list Fran finds it a great way to ensure that they buy only the food they need, saving money and a long walk up the stairs to their flat with extra food.
Fran would love to be able to speed up the process of finding recipes and listing the necessary ingredients. She points out that the most of her time is spent trying to find recipes that use up left over ingredients.
Secondary Scenario
Sometimes if they have been away or Fran does not have time to make a menu plan, she just buys the food she needs for the night and next lunchtime on her way home from work. She points out that like many people, she is tired after a days work and sometimes finds it difficult to know what to buy. She notes that it would be great to have a service that could offer recipe ideas and inspiration, even if it is something as simple as a boiled egg.
