TRANSCRIPT
The Learning Communities at UWSMPH have three guiding principles:
Create a caring community for all learning community members
Help learning community members make sense of their experiences
Empower the community and its members to make transparent and positive decisions
Through these guiding principles, the learning communities will foster community, leadership, professional-ism, well-being and sharing of knowledge in order to develop more intellectually, socially, physically and emo-tionally prepared physicians.

Graduation is only two weeks away! And then you’ll be taking that excit-ing next-step to residen-cy. Before you go, re-member that each M4 is allotted FIVE tickets for family and friends to at-tend the SMPH Recogni-tion Ceremony on Fri-day, May 13 at 10am in Varsity Hall at Union South, 1308 W. Dayton St.
We are celebrating the investiture of the Class of 2016 into the medical profession. WMAA will host a buffet reception immediately following the ceremony, outside at Un-ion South’s Terrace. Tickets can be picked up April 25 - May 6, 8:30am-4:30pm, in the 4th Floor WMAA Office
of Maureen Brady (HSLC Rm 4291) – if Maureen isn’t there, other WMAA staff members can give you your guest tick-ets.
Unclaimed tickets as of Monday, May 9, will be made available to stu-dents on a wait-list. To be placed on the wait list, please email Andrea Lar-son at [email protected] with the number of extra tickets you are hoping for.
WMAA can’t guarantee they will have extra tick-ets, but if they do, they will grant the extras to those who are on the wait-list as of May 9. When you pick up your tickets from WMAA, it’s also a perfect time to do-
nate to your “Class of 2016 Fund in Honor of Dr. Patrick McBride” – so bring your credit card or cash with you when you come pick up your Recog-nition Ceremony tickets. Remember, if you do-nate at least $2,016 by June 1, WMAA will match it! Starting at 5:30pm that same afternoon, University Commencement will take place at the Kohl Center, 601 West Dayton St. Doors open at 4:00pm. No tickets are required for admission and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Graduates must arrive no later than 5:00pm.

2012-2016
Second semester is a time of transition for our students and we wel-come the events where student leaders can be recognized for their dedi-cation and commitment to the greater good of all SMPH students. Student leaders in IHC and MSA gathered on April 27th for a fabulous luncheon sponsored by the Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association (WMAA).
Dean Gold-en kicked off the an-nual lunch-eon with powerful words about what it means to grow into leadership positions and learn to take on ever greater challenges. Dean petty continued the message with inspira-tional words as well as great tips to look at other leaders, regardless of whether we personally like or dislike them, and analyze what they do well as leaders. Karen Peterson, Director of WMAA, took the mes-sage into the future and provided examples of SMPH graduates across
the country who are now serving on WMAA’s Board. Student leaders were presented with certifi-cates signed by Deans Golden, Petty, and McIn-tosh, and recognized for their hard work through-out the year. The luncheon concluded with student leaders cre-ating a snowstorm of special acknowledge-ments and lessons learned from the past two years.

The Big Sib/Little Sib pro-gram has continued to grow over the past two years and we are excited to offer provide peer mentoring for all of our students.

Sib participants who want to become leaders of Sib groups will participate in
more specific orientation and training prior to the start of the 2016-17 school year.
This training will address typical questions and situ-ations that Sibs encoun-ter. It will also provide an opportunity for Sib leaders to think creatively about activities they would like to carry forward with their own group.
Sibs at all levels in their medical student careers are an important peer support network, helping each other to understand medical school, build a social community, and stay healthy while adjust-ing to the unique yearly demands of being a medi-cal student.

Congratulations on a great match day! Now we really need your help in completing the AAMC Gradua-tion Questionnaire. All graduating medical students should have received a reminder from the AAMC on 4/1/2016 about The Graduation Questionnaire, along with a link As of April 25th, here is how we’re doing so far...
68% of our graduating students
have completed the question-naire.
10.5% of our graduating students
have the questionnaire “in pro-gress.”
21.5% of our graduating students
have not started the question-naire.
If the class of 2016 can reach a 94% completion rate by May 13th, 2016,
they will receive $750 for their class fund. WOW! The Class of 2015 hit their 94% com-pletion rate and gained a nice sum of money for their class fund.
Class of 2016… YOU CAN DO THIS!

For those of you who will be on extra-mural rotations during 2016-17, you want to be sure that you receive a grade and credit for your rotation(s). After you accept an extramural rota-tion, you will need to enter the course and additional contact in-formation in OASIS. This places you on a “waiting list.” Instructions for adding your extramural rotation(s) are located in OASIS Notices>General Information>Forms>Y4 Instructions

GHHS Rounds: Work-Life Balance
It has to be right for you but there's never really a right time. It's hard to get rid of the guilt that you've pushed aside studying. Learn to not feel guilty and to enjoy your family and relaxation time because that time is mentally and emotionally beneficial for you as well as others around you. Even when you enjoy your free time, it's sometimes hard to talk about your day. As a doctor, your day has a rou-tine that may not make for interesting conversation; at the same time, you can't talk about specifics of interesting cases due to HIPAA. Two additional suggestions regarding work-life balance were asking people who have been through this for ad-vice, and hire a cook, a housekeep-er, etc., if you can afford it so that you can focus on your family. The discussion on burnout also looked at the level of involvement that doctors may have with families of their patients. Pros and cons of family involvement included: Pros
In general, more inclusive patient
care is beneficial
35 people joined the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) both remotely and on site for monthly Rounds on April 13th to discuss medical doctor burnout and work-life balance. Discussion started with a TED Talk that essentially indicated that there really is no such thing as work-life balance other than what you try to create. Medical students agreed that the im-mediacy of today's emails, phones, and other media take away from fami-ly or relaxation time. Additionally, as a student, not always knowing your exact schedule, or having a specific start-end time for your schedule can also take time away. Students suggested that learning to step away from your phone or email and focus on the family in front of you is essential. If you can, set a "date night," do that and stick to it. Resist putting off these special times for “later” because these times are im-portant and “later” might not occur. With unpredictable schedules, taking advantage of the free time you get and knowing how to use it in ways that are best for you and your situa-tion will also provide balance. There isn't really a right time to do anything.
Friday, May 6th is the deadline to make a quick visit to WMAA offices on the 4th floor of HSLC and write a brief postcard to your benefactors. WMAA provides the card, the candy, and the postage. M1s need to provide the message of gratitude that fosters a strong connection between stu-dents and alumni. For many, that first stethoscope was an important memory of the start of their medical careers. Please take time to honor that memory and thank your stethoscope donor!
Alumni of our medical school give generously to programs supporting the academic success of our stu-dents. In August, 2015, all new M1 students received a stethoscope as their gift from another medical school alum-nus. Alumni remember what it’s like to be a student and how much it means to have support from those who paved the way for you.
Giving Thanks For Your Stethoscopes
Families can provide insight into
the patient that you might not get directly from the patient
Family support can help a patient
heal better or more quickly Cons
Family members can end up
speaking for the patient rather than the patient speaking for him/herself.
Family members can work at
keeping a patient alive longer than the patient wants.
There are situations in which the
family member is preventing the patient from speaking honestly about what she or he wants or needs.
GHHS Rounds are an excellent forum for medical students at all levels, resi-dents, staff, and faculty to gather and discuss issues that are important to them. Mark your calendar for the next GHHS Rounds on
