CROSSINGHOSTEL & GALLERY 153 N 3rd St, Columbus OH

This is a boutique hostel with essential European elements designed specifically for American backpackers and business professionals. The objective of this project is to create a multi-use building in Columbus with hospitality at its core that engages the surrounding community through art and attracts and encourages young adults to explore downtown Columbus and the Short North. The Gallery and Café on the lower level offers art experiences to the public promoting both local and visiting artists and dining experiences to travelers and professionals, The interplay of light and art in the building’s interior evokes excitement and interest as visitors move through the space and into the city. With an emphasis on hospitality a hostel can sustain and improve the city center, by integrating art and culture, dining and entertainment.

The five-story building is created with a diversity of spaces and is strategically designed to optimize natural light during the day and be activated at night with special events. Planning the space with multifunctional purposes during the day and night creates opportunities to add vitality and interest. Film, as a form of new media art, is a profound means of human communication. No matter the genre: action, comedy or drama, films can bring pleasure to a very broad audience. The multi level cinema within the hostel provides a universally enjoyed experience to its visitors. Adding facilities like a café restaurant within the hostel benefits both locals and travelers; it encourages interaction between the two parties even more. The hostel becomes a community of its own through its occupants.

NO MISTEAKRESTAURANT 642 N High St, Columbus, OH “No miSteak” is an avant-garde, modern steakhouse designed specifically for young professionals. The space is designed to breathe new life into the traditional steakhouse experience. The restaurant offers three distinct dining experiences. The bar hosts high tables and stools intended for small groups and quick meals or drinks. For a community experience, there are several large table toward the rear of the space. In between the community experience and the sociable bar, there is a section denoted by a lowered ceiling for a more intimate experience. Just like a fine wine complements a mouthwatering medium-rare steak, the restaurant boasts a collection of artful shelving and dividers with strong linear presences balances the warm colors and wood textures.

FLUEREHOUSE Marcel Breuer’s Stillman House I inspired the domestic influences in the space. The interior is where the possibilities reside. Space has infinite forms, but it’s boundaries that make space usable. Interstitial space enforces the interaction between other spaces like a palette cleanser between courses. The challenge is to deconstruct a simple bauhaus diagram and rebuild it into something that fascinates the user and leaves a unique impression. The key is to finder order in chaos.
