Obviously the proof of the pudding will be inthe eating, but it seems that 2015 will beremembered as the year the interiors marketstabilised itself, after having got back on itsfeet in 2013, and wobbled uncertainlyforward a bit in 2014.

And with a bit of luck it’ll carry on itsprogress in 2016. Perhaps not running, buthopefully walking confidently. Withconsumer confidence, interest rates, inflationand wages all doing their bit to boostretailing, it seems the major issue holdingback the market is housing.

Everyone knows how closely linked thehousing and interiors markets are, but withthe major home building companiescomplaining about a lack of opportunities, you would have thought the government

would have come up with a proper plan tobuild the 250,000 homes a year the housingcharity Shelter says we need to solve the lackof affordable housing. After all, it has had sixyears to do something.

The lack of housing means consumershave no choice but to spend ever increasingamounts of their income on paying amortgage or rent, leaving less to spend onanything else, meaning the sofa, carpet orwardrobe will have to last just that bit longer.

With the major house builders unable orunwilling to build sufficient numbers ofhomes that make the profits they want, isn’tit time the government started building itsown or let local councils build them?

I’m not suggesting concreting over half thecountryside, as there are plenty of brownfieldsites that could be transformed. As I writethis George Osborne is delivering his AutumnStatement to the House of Commons: hewants to allow local authorities to decide onSunday trading hours (in England and Wales),so why not let them decide about housing?

Finally, on behalf of everyone at InteriorsMonthly may I wish you a merry Christmas, a happy New Year and, of course, aprosperous winter sale.

Surely by now thegovernment should havecome up with a way ofgetting more badly neededhomes built

One stop shop forHarvey NormanHarvey Norman has widened its productoffer to include flooring and softfurnishings at its new flagship store.

The chain has recruited concessionretailers at the 61,000sqft Boucher Road,Belfast store, the former home of Fultons.

The Home Centre, which employs 65 staff, hosts concession retailers Colortrend, MattBritton Flooring, Signature Curtains andBlinds, and the 140-seat Synge & Byrnerestaurant.

‘We are extremely excited to be openingthis new store in such an iconic location onthe Boucher Road in Belfast. HarveyNorman’s brand is strong in Belfast, butwe’ve not put our best foot forward withour older Newtownabbey store, thebuilding and the location has been achallenge. This relocation will finally allowus to fully represent the best of our offering

to our customers,’ says Blaine Callard,Harvey Norman Ireland ceo.

He says the store has everything forcreating or renovating a perfect home.

‘I think our customers will be delightedwith the scale and presentation of the store. There is nothing like this in Belfast. Ourstores in Northern Ireland have been someof our fastest growing globally during thelast year, so it’s clear that people loveshopping with us,’ adds Callard.

Eamon McFadden, store manager, saysthe store has Belfast’s largest sofa, furnitureand bedding range with over 90 sofas onthe shopfloor and more than 300 differentbedding options.

‘From custom dining sets to a top classnursery section, the Boucher Road store haseverything for the home under one roof,’adds McFadden.

John Lewis is to open its first stores inContinental Europe next year and an At Home in Brighton and Hove in 2017.

The Brighton At Home store will be onthe site occupied by Boots in the city’sNorth Street. John Lewis bought thefreehold to the building last December.

‘We have held a long-term ambition tohave a presence in Brighton. Although ashop opening is a long way off, over thecoming months we intend to workclosely with local retail, business, and

community organisations in the city aswe develop more detailed proposals. Wehope to submit a planning application inthe first half of 2016,’ says Andrew Mills,John Lewis acquisitions anddevelopment manager.

With a planning application not dueuntil next year, the store is unlikely toopen before 2017.

The chain opened its 14th At Home UKstore at Basingstoke on 12 November.

It will open seven shop-in-shops in

branches of Dutch department storechain de Bijenkorf of between 300sqft-500sqft. Three will open in Amsterdam,Rotterdam and The Hague by next April, with the rest due by the end of the year.

‘Our existing shop-in-shops inSingapore, the Philippines and SouthKorea are trading well. While we remaincommitted to our UK physical expansionwe hope to announce more internationalcollaborations in 2016,’ says Andy Street,John Lewis md.

Furniture salesnot hit by BlackFriday effect Furniture retailers wereamong the few sectors thatwere able to shrug off thepre-effects of Black Friday asretail sales dropped inOctober as shoppersanticipated discounts at theend of November.

Like for like retail sales fellby 0.2% in October asconsumers held back onshopping, according to theBritish Retail Consortium-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor.

‘October was a somewhatdisappointing month overallfor retailers. A number ofcategories which we wouldtypically expect to be popularon Black Friday saw aslowdown in October, suggesting that someshoppers may be holding outin the hope of some greatdeals at the end ofNovember,’ says HelenDickinson, BRC chiefexecutive.

‘Furniture had a goodmonth, however, probablyboosted by higher disposableincomes.’

Supermarkets continued toface pressure on marginsfrom price cuts and were alsohurt by England’s early exitfrom the Rugby World Cup,which was seen to haveaffected alcohol sales.

Orders upbut growthslows at ScSUpholstery and flooring chain ScS has seen orders rise, butgrowth has slowed.

Ahead of its AGM last month, the chain said like for likeorders were 7.9% higher in the 16 weeks to 14 November.

However, it compared with a 13.3% rise in the nineweeks to 19 September.

‘The board is pleased to report that ScS continues totrade in line with expectations and has had a good start tothe current financial year. Like for like order intake(including House of Fraser) has progressed as expected, and for the 16 weeks ended 14 November 2015 is up 7.9%,a pleasing performance against particularly strongcomparatives during autumn,’ Alan Smith, ScS chairmantold shareholders.

ScS has confirmed that its next store opening is inBromborough, Wirral, scheduled for 26 December.

‘We continue to look forward to the year ahead andbeyond with confidence,’ said the board.

Shareholders will be next updated on trading inFebruary.

˚Benchmark Furniture and Raw-Edges Design Studio shared thetop award in the Wood Awards. The judges felt the Bespokecategory was so strong that two of the shortlisted projectsshould win a Bespoke Furniture and Product Wood Award: Raw-Edges Design Studio’s Endgrain and Benchmark’s Ves-el.

Endgrain showcases the possibilities provided by dying woodinstead of painting it. Staining the wood all the way thoughleaves it consistently saturated. Endgrain was fitted as a grid-likewooden floor creating coloured pathways through the galleryof Chatsworth House. The idea for the timber soaking camefrom xylem, the water-conducting tissue found in trees.Jelutong Timber and Southern Yellow Pine, supplied by JennorTimber, were used. The judges were excited to see colour usedin wood, which is unusual, and admired the studio’s initiative.

For Ves-el, Gareth Neal was invited to architect Zaha Hadid’soffice to work with her design team, using the company’smodelling software to design Ves-el. From this came the idea ofextruding the form along one of its axis with a slit opening atthe end. Neal was interested in the idiosyncrasies of traditionalhand processes such as a hand-thrown pot or a raised piece ofsilverware, and how simulating these could be achievedthrough digital imitation. The vessels were made in two partson a CNC machine. Thejudges felt this was awinner because of thecombination of theprocess and the finishedresult which, they said, had an intensity of energy.

The Student Designeraward was won by RoyalCollege of Art studentSimin Qiu for End Grainstationery accessories, made from cutting theend grains from offcutsand gluing them together.Building Crafts Collegestudent Emma Leslie wonthe Student DesignerPeople’s Choice Award forher slatted chair.

Retailers in England and Wales may haveto pay staff more to work on Sundays ifthe government presses ahead withplans to liberalise Sunday trading.

Faced with defeat in its attempt toallow local authorities to set Sundayopening hours, it has put the plans onhold until it can convince rebel Torybackbenchers, some of whom object onreligious grounds, and the SNP which

fears the higher Sunday pay rates inScotland will be lost.

Business secretary Sajid Javid now hasto reach a deal with the SNP’sWestminster leader Angus Robertson, who is demanding that Sunday premiumpay rates given to Scottish workers willbe guaranteed and apply across the UK.

‘We are keen to protect workers’ pay inScotland and the rest of the UK. Given

there were no guarantees or safeguardsfrom the government that would protect shop workers’ pay, we werepledged to oppose their plans and theyfaced defeat in the Commons,’ saysRobertson.

‘The government now needs to goaway and think again about how it canprovide the necessary guarantees andsafeguards to shop workers.’

MBO at LeeLonglands

The management of Midlands furniture group LeeLonglands has completed a management buy out‘protecting the core values of the business.’

Darren Campo, Steve Tressler and Robert Lee haveinvested an undisclosed multi-million pound amountsecuring a 72% stake in the six-store retailer.

The trio wants to increase this to 100% in the next threeyears by buying the remaining shares from the originalfamily members, who will have no say in the running ofthe £18.7m chain.

‘This MBO ensures the retention of the leadership teamand enables a more longer term strategic focus, which willultimately help the business to achieve its aggressivegrowth targets,’ says Campo, Lee Longlands financialdirector.

‘This deal isn’t about change, it’s about protecting thecore values of the business, which have been in existencesince the company was formed over 100 years ago. It’sabout continuing to put the customer first throughout thelifecycle of the buying experience, from initial contact withour sales team, right the way through to post deliverycare. These are the values which the business was builtupon and which we will continue to focus on,’ he adds.

The group employs 107 staff and has stores inBirmingham, Derby, Cheltenham, Leamington Spa and two in Abingdon.

The Long Eatonmanufacturer is to open twounits in nearby CastleDonington and is looking toemploy 55 extra workers inthe coming months, increasing its staff by morethan half.

‘We’re very pleased to beexpanding into theseadditional premises andtaking on new staff,’ saysAiden Travers, Acclaimcommercial director. ‘This willhelp us to meet theincreasing demand for ourhigh-quality, hand-madeEnglish upholstered furniture.’

House pricesup in OctoberUK house prices rose by 3.9%in October compared with2014, according toNationwide.

Property values increasedby 0.6% compared withSeptember, the buildingsociety said, putting the costof the average home at£196,807.

Economic conditions aidedaffordability levels despiterecord average prices, saysRobert Gardner, Nationwidechief economist. ‘Historicallylow interest rates have helpedto offset the negative impactof rising house prices onaffordability.’

The leaning Tower of Pisa is curved. When the structure started to sink onone side the builders tried tocompensate by making the higher floorstaller on one side than the other, sothere’s no hope of ever making it lookstraight. It was destined to tilt beforebuilding even began because thefoundations were wrong.

So what’s the connection with carpetgripper? Because grippers are asimportant to a good fitted carpet as thefoundations are to the leaning tower ofPisa. If the gripper’s wrong, the finishedjob will suffer. It may not be a sexyproduct, but poor gripper fitting is thecause of more carpet problems thananything else. It will allow the carpet tocome loose, ruck and fray: problems thatare often wrongly blamed on the carpetmanufacturer.

Gripper has three important – critical –parts: the angled front edge, the pins, and the fixings to hold it to the floor.

The angled front edge forms a dovetailslot that holds the edge of the carpet. Ifthe gripper is too far from the skirting

The gap between the gripper and theskirting should be two thirds of thethickness of the carpet – usually no morethan 6mm-8mm, and not the thicknessof the fitter’s thumb or finger. Thisensures the carpet is held securely.

A tucking knife needs to be used, not abolster and hammer that damages thegripper edge and stops it working. Thegripper must be cut carefully to fitaround shapes such as architraves tomaintain the correct gap all the wayround.

For Saxony carpets, the gap should bejust wide enough to accept the backingand squeeze the roots of the pile.

Gripper pins hold the tension in thecarpet. Be careful not to flatten them –use a tack hammer not a large headedclaw hammer. Every piece of gripper, even the small pieces cut to go roundarchitraves or radiator pipes, should haveat least one pin in them. It’ll mean a tinyamount of gripper wasted, but less

Richard Renouf

chance of a loose bit of carpet. And onstairs, the gripper should go the fullwidth; half sticks leave gaps at each sidethat mean the carpet can never betensioned properly at the edges.

Finally, the fixings. Nails are often pre-fitted, but there are different nails fordifferent floors. There should be at leasttwo fixings in every piece of gripper, andwithin 25mm of each end. This stops thegripper flexing or turning.

Many modern staircases should not benailed as it damages the stairs and theybecome creaky, so staples or glue arenecessary.

Where there may be pipes under floorsthe gripper should be cut to shortlengths of about 150mm and glued, using a fast setting adhesive or allowingplenty of time for the adhesive to set.

Out of sight, out of mind? You’d be outof your mind to take short cuts with thegripper.

Maintain the correct gap even round architraves

Function reimaginedRecipients of the German Design Awards

THREE PAGES FOR THE FURNTIURE AND TWO FOR THEOTHERSARROWS

The German Design Award is the German DesignCouncil’s premium prize. A jury of 22 internationaljudges comprising designers, brand consultants, design professors and journalists selected theGold and Winners for the furniture and hometextile and home accessories categories. OliverGrabes, head of design at Braun, and designerSebastian Herkner who is creating the 2016 DasHaus at IMM Cologne next month, were on thejudging panel. Here are a selection of theirchoices, with comments from Grabes andHerkner. The awards are due to be presented atAmbiente in February.Visit: http://gallery.designpreis.de/en

FURNITURE GOLDLigne Roset’s Beau Fixe by Inga Sempé Design‘Beau Fixe is an extremely comfortable upholstered sofa with a high level ofcraftsmanship and a reinterpretation of the traditional wingback chair.Characteristic of this intelligently designed piece of furniture is thecombination of two complementary parts: a lateral metal frame structure andan upholstered cover. The uniquely designed frame functions like a clasp, folding the cover into different parts and thus forming the armrests, seat,chair-back and wings. It is an elegant/casual piece of furniture that radiatespracticality, straightforwardness and spontaneity. It is a beautiful andinnovative solution that represents a truly new, unique design.’

Furniture winners

Plank’s Remo by Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design‘Remo is a simple, down to earth form-block chair and a beautiful example for how it can look whenhand-crafted tradition is united with the latest production technologies. A characteristic feature of thestackable chair is the T-shaped back that is positively connected with the saddle-like arched seatthrough a special procedure. This symbolic two-part construction leads to an extremely light but strongseat that offers exceptional comfort.’

Skagerak’s George Mirror by Christina Liljenberg Halstrøm‘Two slender poles hold a mirror. It doesn’t getany simpler than that. And yet this technicallyreduced, downright symbolically designed pieceof furniture – which is simply leaned against thewall – is a true eye-catcher. The poles ofuntreated or painted-black oak are both theframe and the supports and even allowsomething to be hung on them – what a greatsolution.’

Neocraft’s Isom by Sebastian Scherer‘The most peculiar aspect ofIsom coffee tables is theiraesthetic toying with opticalillusions. The table surface, ahexagonal area of transparentglass, is set on three differently-coloured squares, the edges ofwhich create an isometric imageof a dye. It is an impressive andsensual object with anincredibly aesthetic finish. Theglass table is available in twoversions: Isom Square and IsomOblong.’

Muller’s Stack by Kressel + SchelleDesign‘Stack is not just apainted metalsideboard that can beindividually modifiedin width, height andcolour, it is incrediblyflexible when it comesto its storagecompartments. Open storagecompartments can,for example, becombined with closedboxes, or a choice canbe made betweencabinet doors anddrawers. A modularshelf with a minimalistdesign that is suitablefor many decorativestyles due to itsflexibility.’

Expormim’s Frames by Hayon Studio‘In the Frames furniture collection, traditional outdoorfurniture for the interior, and thus for use all year long, wasnewly interpreted. With a classic framework structureproduced in a bending technique that forms threesurfaces and a covering of woven wicker, the designer, whose signature is clearly recognisable, succeeded inproducing a beautiful piece of traditional crafted art.’

Minimum’s m01 by Studio Mark Braun and manufactured by Thonet‘There are many table stands, the m01 being one of the few that is height-adjustable. Buteven in form this furniture is fun, because in an ironic way it quotes the concept of aclassic bicycle frame with handle and saddle bars. Just like for a bike, both can simply bepulled out and adjusted to the desired height with a quick-release lever. A beautiful, consistently implemented idea that despite its figurative impression is extremelyfunctional.’

Rolf Benz’s Tira by Joachim Nees‘Luxurious-looking arms resting on filigree metal frames, delicate backrests,

ergonomically formed and extremely comfortable seat and back cushions with high-quality upholstery and precise decorative

stitching as well as loose adjustable back cushions are all decisive elements of the Tira sofa. With one simple movement, each of the three back cushions becomes an additional seating surface and the sofa becomes a

sofabed or sofa island. Since the extension mechanism for each

module permits a continuous setting as well as intermediate settings, thesofa can be flexibly arranged to change its character.’

Wittmann’s Mono by Studio Marco Dessi‘Mono is a compact, almost delicate chair with footstool.Crisp edges and beautifully clear lines help it to appearincredibly light. The piece, offered as a single armchair, integrates harmoniously with other sofas thanks to itsminimalist design. A highly elegant design that is alsoextremely comfortable.’

Tacchini Italia’s Pisa by Martin Claesson, Eero Koivisto, Ola Rune ‘Pisa is an elegant, minimally designed armchair whose half-rounded, high seatback forms an intimate space that semi-enclosesthe person sitting in it and in so doing provides space for privacy. The characteristic line-work – the slightly slanted chair back and thecut profile – become effective when one takes a seat in thearmchair – a technically reduced, functional design.’

B&B Italia’s Papilio Shell by Naoto Fukasawa Design‘The technically reduced design ofPapilio Shell is inspired by aseashell. The shell and rotatingframe form a harmonious unit oftimeless elegance. The wonderfullycomfortable shell chair isreminiscent of Danish classics, butboasts sufficient autonomy – sleekand beautiful.’

Paola Lenti’s Move by Studio Francesco Rota‘Move is a modularly designed, incredibly flexible sofa. It iseither laid directly on the floor or rests on stainless steelfeet, the armrests are removable and can be freelypositioned. The cover is also removable and can beadapted to individual demands. An exciting sofa solutionthat allows for an infinite number of compositions thatrange from cosy to formal.’

Home textile and home accessories winnersHOME TEXTILE AND HOME ACCESSORIES GOLDInterstil Diedrichsen’s W2 by Frank Greiser‘The W2 is an intelligent mounting system for drape-style curtains thatcombines fabric and technology. The concave shade mirrors the folds ofthe drapery and gives it an expressive prevalence. In contrast to typicaltrack systems on the market, W2 highlights the mounting and uses theshadow gap with the ceiling to create an image of graceful elegance and flow. The glider channel allows for perfect sliding and is hidden from view, leaving none of the fasteningelements visible. The curtain appears to float beneath the track. Perfect for demanding interiors.’

Rosenthal’s Nightingale by Dante – Goods & Bads ‘The Nightingale table lamp puts thestructure and the construction of a lamptotally and in the truest sense of the word,on its head. Its shade is turned at a 90degangle and thereby creates a totally newrelationship between the lamp and thereflector. The filigree porcelain body with itscarrying straps of leather imitate theiconographic form of an archaic lantern, interprets it completely anew andtransposes it through its clear use of formand the soft LED cone of light into themodern world. A terrific light and materialexperience.’

Ruckstuhl’s Maglia by Peter Ruckstuhl‘The Maglia carpet collection is made of natural Fique fibres and woven and knitted in atraditional manner, in which the irregularities of the material result in an authentic pattern, which produces a visually interesting effect. The “national fibres” of Columbia were used toproduce coffee sacks and agricultural yarn in the past. The collection is offered in 30expressive tones and colours.’

Gustav van Treeck’sGerhard by Arwed Guderian‘The Gerhardcandleholder standsout through itsdeviation from theusual closed glasscylinder form. Theclearly designedcylinder is madecompletely ofborosilicate glass and,due to the opening, ensures easy handling. The appearance of thecandle, which looks asif it is floating, and thedual lighting effectproduce a magicaland poetical effect. The cleverdetached head and cordsystem is wonderfully easy tomount and also to remove, andprovides any home with amodern and smart look. Aplayful approach to the subjectof mountings, which is alsocompletely new in comparisonwith standard curtain rails.’

Spinks Springs’ Posturflo 3D by Steaven Hodgson and Darren Marcangelo‘Posturflo 3D is a real innovation in mattress technology, as italso enables the use of materials which ensure the highestlevel of comfort in the core of the mattress, to be used in thecover as well. As the standard mattress technology has beenreduced significantly in size as a result of this, entirely newpossibilities are available in relation to sleeping comfort. For example, in addition to optimised pressure relief, thePosturflo 3D also improves air circulation considerably, whichin turn ensures the atmosphere in bed remains much coolerand dryer.’

Dua’s Seismographic by Jono Concepts‘The unusual form of this wonderful vase collection wasinspired by aesthetic seismographic drawings recordedduring an earthquake. Selected sections of the two-dimensional curve provide the asymmetrical design for thevases. This unexpected and contrarian approach – delicatevase objects made of porcelain versus the raw forces ofnature – is storytelling at its best, which makes thisfascinating collection even more interesting. The vases, which bear the names New Zealand and Italy, are hand-made in Germany.’

T47 Bioactive TextileWallcoverings by T47 Bioactive TextileWallcoverings ‘The bioactive textilewallcoverings from T47sustainably improve roomconditions. The inorganic saltintegrated into the material hasa catalytic effect, turningunpleasant odours, contaminants andenvironmental pollutants intonatural, non-toxic substances.Minute silver ions on the textilefibres decimate bacteria, germsand pathogens. Allergy risks arealso reduced. With its simple, aesthetic elegance, T47 hasmanaged to combine designand function at an extremelyhigh level. Very worthwhile forboth private and office use.’

Snug.Studio’s Snug.Vase by Snug.Studio‘Snug.Vase is a decorative vase object made from acarton with a geometric form, which is delivered in

the form of a pattern sheet that isfolded together by the user. It is

simply slipped over a bottle ordrinking glass, depending on

whether the small or large version isselected. This provides a stable

foundation for the vase while at the sametime solving the water problem. The materials,

which are both unexpected andunusual for a vase, and thetransformation from a 2D to a 3Dobject make this product excitingand interesting. Really original.’

There is never a quiet moment for theGallery Direct team. Having recentlylaunched the company’s Autumn/WinterLook Book, it is now getting ready topresent a 2016 publication featuring ahost of new products.

‘From the initial ideas, throughdevelopment and production, tolaunching and selling the new products, the whole team at Gallery is involved toensure their success,’ says Peter Delaney,Gallery Direct md.

‘The style and quality of the productsis obviously of key importance, so wehave eight designers workingthroughout the year. Without thefantastic behind the scenes logistics, wecouldn’t ensure client satisfaction.Everyone works hard, all year long. Theideas and design of products is acontinually evolving process.’

The spring/summer 2016 launch hasbeen developed from the new Nörd look, says Mat Penney, Gallery Direct productdirector.

‘The new designs echo theScandinavian and Danish designs of themid-20th century. However, I wanted therange to have a more relaxed and lived-

in feel. We developed a colour palette tocomplement the beautiful natural tonesof the furniture. The elegant design andsophisticated detailing of the Wycombeand Keilder ranges showcase thecraftsmanship and solid oak timbers. Wehave added a stunning range of mirrors, cushions, throws, bedding, lighting andaccessories to complete the look,’ he says.

The products will be launched at theJanuary Furniture Show where thecompany will occupy about 10,000sqft

across two stands. Its main doubledecker stand will be even larger than in2015, to showcase more products thanbefore from its Hudson Living furnitureranges, along with a selection of mirrors, soft furnishings and accessories.

The second area will have an open feelwith more space to exhibit a widerselection of Frank Hudson beds, bedroom furniture and accompanyingproducts.Visit: www.gallerydirect.co.uk

Concrete mixerKare Design has found a solution tothe problem of weighty concrete

Concrete is a fascinating material and furniture designers are excited by thediverse range of possibilities it offers. With surfaces that can be polished ordeliberately left slightly rough, furniture made from concrete by no meansmakes a cool impression but instead looks inviting, especially in combinationwith warm shades of metal such as gold, copper and brass.

Combining concrete with solid wood, in particular light-coloured

wood, creates exciting contrasts and removes any impression ofheaviness from the material.

The connection between wood and concrete evokes images fromnature, suggesting mountain landscapes with wild rivers, driftwood and pebbles in all shades of grey. But, in spite of all its attractionsconcrete as a material has one disadvantage: its weight.

At Kare its designers have developed alternative furniture and lampswith the concrete look, and these enable an industrial style into anyhome without endangering its structural properties. For example, theyuse cement which looks very similar, or make the surfaces look likeconcrete by using an exclusive finishing process.

The concrete look is an irresistible match for clean lines and unadorneddesign, which together with the various nuances of grey, create anatmosphere of calm. This is complemented in decorative terms by greenplants, from the Swiss cheese plant with its huge leaves, to cacti andpoinsettias, which provide a fascinating contrast to the grey surfaces withtheir leaf structures and varied forms.Visit: www.kare-design.com

Zip into actionIt is now easier to get to the inner core of Fibreline’s cushions

Encore cushions are known for beinglight and easy to maintain but nowFibreline has made looking after themeven easier.

The simple addition of a zip allowseasy access to the inner core of thecushion allowing it to be massaged tofull plumpness with ease.

Encore has been successful since itslaunch in 2010 and has two variants:fibre and feather. Cushions have the lookand feel of fibre or feather with therecovery of foam.

Encore-Fibre holds the FIRA Gold sealof approval and in FIRA tests itoutperformed all other fibre cushions.

A four-year guarantee against saggingprovides retailers with confidence in thecushions’ performance in seatingapplications.

The range retains the casual look andat the heart of the cushions is highperformance seating foam that allowsthe cushion to spring back to its originalshape again and again. With theadvantage of being lighter than a similarsized fibre or feather cushion, it is easierto pick up and plump, although lessfrequent plumping is required as regularturning of the cushion is enough tomaintain its performance.Visit: www.encorecushion.co.uk

Ashley Manor is expanding its most recent collectionAshley Manor’s Rare Bird collection isproving hugely successful and will bejoined by two new models with verydifferent stories: Olivia and Florence.

Olivia fits well with a laid backlifestyle – deconstructed, contemporary, fresh and comfortable.

‘Olivia’s simply soft neutral theme isaccented with a splash of monotone, making for a much loved colourcombination. The design features gentlegeometric detailing and warmingtextural weaves. Shapely curves areenhanced by a pin-tuck detail and theslumbersome slouchy seats feel as soft asa comforting cloud,’ says Steve Morgan,Ashley Manor sales director.

‘Florence is stylish and decadent.Dressed in the finest silky damasks fromItaly, this elegant collection is richlydecorative and lavish. A precious metalcolour spectrum of warm golds, bronzesand glistening silvers is accented withsoft lavender notes,’ says Mark Smith,Ashley Manor creative director.

‘Must-have design detailing includescontrast textured piping andcoordinating striped and geometricpatterned sumptuous scatters. The latest

colour addition for Florence is classicMink, a creamy champagne story and agreat romantic twist on a neutral theme,’he says.

Anna Taylor, Ashley Manor fabricspecialist, adds: ‘Full of charm and Tuscanelegance, Italian fabrics really giveFlorence a European edge. Our latestDamask is bold and characterful andavailable in a dreamy colour palettefeaturing classic Mink. Inspired by timesgone by, but not forgotten, the elegantcontours and lines of this timeless classicsofa will last long in the memories of allwho indulge in Florence’s simplystunning comfort.’

One of the key benefits of Metro Groupmembership is its marketing service. Thegroup is dedicated to respecting retailers’independence and offers assistance tonot only provide support for own-labelling and branding, but also bespokemarketing projects.

Recently Metro visited New ImageCarpets in Sunderland following arequest to assist with enhancing theappearance of the business externallyand internally.

New Image was visited by Steve andAdam Moralee in the group’s marketingvehicle and they looked at ways toimprove the appearance of this longestablished business while retaining itsmarket position.

‘Sometimes the hardest job is toconvince a retailer that he needs tospend time and money. On this occasionthe retailer was well aware of the needfor improvement but was worried aboutthe expense. We took measurements andcame back with ideas on how we couldcost-effectively boost the external andinternal look by not only creatingdisplays and signs, but also renovating

existing signage,’ says Steve Moralee,Metro marketing consultant.

This service allows members to discusstheir needs with people who have over25 years experience in independentflooring retail marketing and understandtheir business.

For New Image Carpets it was decidedthe building could be used to greatereffect to make passing people aware thatthere was a retailer at this site and also toreassure customers it was a professionalbusiness.

The first stage was design, proofingand costing. The new displays andsignage were put into production and then fitted by the Moralees.

The existing main sign was renovated,

Above: Before and after(left)Below: POS was alsocreated

two new 64sqft colour displays were puteither side of the main entrance, alongwith a replacement shutterbox sign anda graphic to dress the side warehouseentrance.

Internally, upper graphics wereproduced to tidy the entrance area of theshop which had previously been filledwith posters and branded POS. Newprice cards were designed and printedwith professionally set customer noticesand POS ceiling cards.

The Metro marketing scheme is uniquebecause all labour from design to fittingis free to members and only the cost ofmaterials used is chargeable. Plus, 90% ofall of the work done can be completed inthe marketing vehicle, on-site, if required.

‘Larger projects are pre-made in ourown factory unit with the largest sign sofar being 16m in length. The New Imagejob was surveyed, designed, producedand fitted within three weeks of the firstvisit. There have been instances wherethis work has been completed within onebusiness day where retailers have had apre-arranged visit,’ adds Moralee.Metro, tel: 01204 393 539

Itprovided inspiration for Mintjens,Moome, B-Seated by BSM, LaForma and Meubelux. Customisingwas also a theme, as demonstratedby Neococoon, Vandecasteele,Recor and Equilli, for example.

Known for its tables and chairs,Sitino launched its first full range offurniture, while Joli Collectionunveiled a home office concept.

Craftmanship it seems is not aforgotten skill, as Theuns,Micheldenolf, Pro Arte, KDB Furn,D-Woods and Leda demonstrated.

The popularity of architectural looks inthe home has inspired Leoline to reworkthe Quartz Pro collection for 2016,bringing a glittering mineral look inSilver Chips and Prisma Chips with vividsparkles of multicolour that glisten andchange at every angle. The existingStonemark collection will have 10 decorsadded including the herringbone stoneof Bilbao in four colourways; Arena, amineral-look tile in four neutral and greytones and Lucca, taking a moretraditional flagstone and reworking it inlimestone and light slate interpretations.

Quick-Step will show its Pulse LVTcollection, with 24 decors. The companyhas invested in embossing and cut inregister technology along withimproving its four-colour printing.

‘The new embossing station hasprolonged contact between theembossing drum and the planks.

This unique feature makes it possible to add complex and sophisticatedtextures to the new LVT collection in acontrolled manner,’ says LaurentMeersseman, Unilin research anddevelopment director.

‘To recreate a genuine wooden flooreffect, we apply a design techniquecalled “plank effect”. Here, subtlenuances, high contrasts and variationsare added between the individual planks. This prevents floors from looking plainand unvaried. The plank effect can onlybe achieved by using a very precisecutting, cut in register. Every separateplank is punched out of the slabs on theexact right spot with millimetreprecision. Every plank is one of a kind:there are no repetitions in either theplank’s décor or structure.’Visit: www.domotex.de
