As China reaps the benefits of itseconomic achievements of the past fewdecades, Chinese consumers increasinglyhave more to spend. The impact of thison China’s furniture industry isenormous. Home furnishing products ofdifferent styles and different origin, moreoften higher value and higher priced, areentering households throughout thecountry.

‘I am very glad that I decided toproduce British country style furnitureeight years ago,’ says Mr Chen fromDongguan Conhot Furniture Co. Underthe brand name of Asena Village, Chenhas opened more than 40 retail storesthroughout China. All his furniture ismade from solid wood.

Chen draws inspiration from the Britishcountryside lifestyle. People who buy hisproducts are often well educated and/orwith high incomes and pay attention totheir ‘high class’ living. Chineseconsumers believe that British or USlifestyles are how the better-off live. Ashis products fit into their dream houses,Chen has enjoyed good sales in first tiercities such as Beijing and Shanghai.

‘The International Famous FurnitureFair (Dongguan) helps me to introducemy products to Chinese consumers,’Chen says. ‘I didn’t open up the 40 retailstores all by myself. Most of the stores arefranchised, and I met all of thefranchisees at the fair.’

‘In good times, average ranges can stillprosper, but in difficult periods realwinners are needed. These twocollections, with their many choices offlexible and compact extending diningoptions, have proved to be such, with theLincoln set being our most popularproduct,’ says Godfrey.
