SPRING 2012
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING
Dear Parents,
Thank you for all your support you have provided for your children throughout this school year.
Our 7th
& 8th
NJ ASK State Testing went very well during the week of April 23rd
. All our 6th
graders will be tested April 30th
, May 1, 2, and 3.
Students worked hard preparing for the test not only throughout the school year but while
competing in our school wide “Race to the Top” challenge. Our teachers put together both Math
and Language Arts help sessions that focused on building and reinforcing their skills for the test.
Teachers helped decorate the hallways with balloons, ribbons and doors to help keep students
focused while preparing for the test. On Friday April 20th
Mr. Roth along with the help of
Health/PE teachers put on a motivational assembly for all the students here at Intermediate East.
The assembly focused on students achieving their dreams and reaching their goals while never
giving up. Students’ reaction to the assembly was that they felt better about themselves, inspired
and want to achieve more.
As we move toward the end of the school year and into warmer weather, students keep in mind
and follow our dress code and remember this is an educational facility. Let’s finish the school
year on a positive note and continue to reach for your goals
HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2012
After several months of hard work and dedication, under the direction of Ms. Michelle Neuhoff, the
assistant direction of Mrs. Jenny Neuhoff and the choreography of Mrs. Brianne Bates, Intermediate
East’s students proudly presented, Disney’s High School Musical to a packed auditorium on March 6th
through March 10th
. Ashlynne Tursi and Michael Fobian portrayed the favorite brother /sister duo
Sharpay and Ryan Evans and kept the audience wanting for more with their comedic timing. The lead
roles of Gabriella Montez played Gabriella Grinwald-Alves, and Troy Bolton played by Chris Ortiz
amazed everyone with their spectacular voices as they sang each night. Andrew Burak (Zeke) had the
audience howling as he smashed a pie into Ashlynne’s (Sharpay) face before intermission. Amanda
Rutter made the crowd cheer as her character, Kelsey Nielsen stood up to Sharpay Evans. The show
would not be complete without the Velvet Fog of East High, Keith O’Brien who kept us entertained
with his narration of the show. And, who can forget the infamous drama teacher, Ms. Darbus, played
by Lili Salt, who kept everyone laughing every time she graced the stage. The entire cast did a
fantastic job, the auditorium was bursting with excitement each night as the cast brought the house
down with the popular song, “We’re All In This Together” and received a standing ovation after every
performance. No production can go on without the help of the crew; production manager, Katherine
Borowski, student director Rebecca Devlin, student stage manager, Kathleen Keogh, crew chief Shane
Kelly, prop managers, Lauren Horbacaweiz, Caitlin Maire, and costume manager, Kristen Donohue,
they were instrumental in making the show a huge success. Ms. Neuhoff and the students are so
thankful for all of the support from administration, teachers, family and friends. Everyone is looking
forward to next year and continuing the tradition of excellent theater at Intermediate East. Being in the
play is a great way to make friends and have fun…hope to see new faces at the auditions next year.
CYCLE NEWS
CYCLE 65 Written by: Kohler Wagner, Mia Tarver, Olivia Alonso and Connor Strickland
With a New Year beginning, new school, new classroom, new people, no one knew what to expect
when they walked into their homeroom. No one knew about the great year that lay ahead of them. This
great year was all thanks to the teachers of cycle 65. Mrs. Geisinger, Mrs. Scanlon, Mrs. Brody, and
Mrs. Cozad, they are all the ones who made the first year of middle school the best it could be. The
cycle could truly agree that this has been a fantastic school year, which is still not yet over.
Mrs. Geisinger makes social studies a blast. For every chapter done in her class, there is a fun project
that goes with it. They studied many ancient civilizations and had a fun time doing it. For Egypt,
they mummified apples. For China, they created little terracotta soldiers. For Greece, they made Greek
pottery. Mrs. Geisinger always lets them work with partners so they never get bored of taking notes.
With almost every section there is a video to help them really understand the materials. She also lets
them play telephone. One really cool thing the cycle did was to eat Chinese food for Chinese New
Year. Overall, all had a great time when in her class.
The students of cycle 65 have recently watched the movie entitled “Percy Jackson and the Olympians:
The Lightning Thief.” They have also read the novel, as well. Everyone had a different opinion on
both. Their language arts teacher, Mrs. Brody, had given them an assignment in which they could
express these opinions. Since they had seen both the movie and the book, they had to pretend to write
a letter to a friend, convincing them to read the novel or watch the movie. The choice was up to the
students, and it all depended on their personal decision. All students had written phenomenal “letters”,
and given great supporting details. “The Lightning Thief” (book and movie) shows a great display of
action and adventure, with many suspenseful moments, too.
When thinking in terms of everyday life, what comes across in a student’s mind? Maybe school,
occupations, chores, etc. what about math? You may just think of math as something so effortless,
when in reality- it’s an everyday necessity! Some individuals take on the perspective of math as
uninteresting or mind-numbing. Cycle 65 considers it differently. They find math as an extremely
important subject to learn about. Their math teacher, Mrs. Cozad, puts in such commitment and
dedication towards making sure they are fond of what they’re learning; whether it’s on fractions,
percentages, charts, or graphs. In the beginning of the year, they had it easy by working on factors of
numbers and then working their way up to geometry. After that, they did line plots, charts, stem and
leaf plots, graphs, etc. and now just finished fractions and percentages. The students are now just
starting probability! Mrs. Cozad always makes sure the cycle is constantly studious, and always
knowing how to make math entertaining, but still squeezing in our effort and determination. Math is a
very fun subject to learn about; after all- it’s a subject needed throughout life.
CYCLE 66
In science, our students became cellular biologists, botanists, oceanographers, physicists, and are on
their way to becoming astronomers!
First, the students were able to experience what it is like to be a cellular biologist. They observed cells
and other microscopic items from our classroom under a microscope. They made DNA molecules out
of pipe cleaners. The students experimented with a fermentation lab which made the room smell like
baked bread.
![Page 5: Intermediate East Rocket Blast - Toms River …After several months of hard work and dedication, under the direction of Ms. Michelle Neuhoff, the assistant direction of Mrs. Jenny](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022082912/5f03cb7c7e708231d40ace6b/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Also, our students learned how to be botanists by learning about different plant life. In class they
planted seeds to take home their gardens. They became biologists when they learned about animal
symmetry and how animals lived within their habitats. The students created colorful bottle fish from 2-
liter bottles that now hang from our classroom ceiling.
Additionally, our students caught a wave when they were oceanographers learning about tsunamis.
Our sixth-grade physicists experimented with tuning forks and flasks when they learned about the
properties of sound. Students created rhyming songs about sound.
Soon, the students will be launched to outer space as astronomers when we learn about astronomy.
Mrs. Boney is very proud of her cycle students. Go East Rockets! Keep up the great work!
In Mathematics, Mr. Rose’s mathematicians of cycle 66 have been tediously working toward
conquering the N.J. A.S.K. The students have been focusing on fractions, decimals, percents, and
probability concepts.
Students had a blast collecting data by recording their jump roping records in class. Mr. Rose hosted a
mock lottery to accentuate probability skills. Lastly, the students paced through obstacle courses, and
their times were recorded on graphs. These fun activities demonstrate how valuable math is in
everyday life.
In Social Studies, welcome to Ancient Rome…Caesar is dead! Mr. Mustica’s classes looked back on
this shocking event by performing a play entitled, “The Great Dictator.” Students learned how Julius
Caesar’s overpowering ambition had brought him death, and how it had also brought an end to the
republic and to the start of the Roman Empire.
Next, the students created a children’s picture book about the empire which they named The Glory of
Rome. All students did a wonderful job illustrating key points and writing captions. We look forward
to the remainder of the chapter in which we will discuss the events of the Colosseum and the fall of the
Roman Empire.
In Language Arts, students recently concluded the novel reading of Luke Garner’s turbulent life.
Students wrote fantastic journal entries as if they were Among the Hidden throughout the rooms of
T.R.I.E.
Furthermore, the students grew passionate about their rights when Miss Betz provided them with a
phony-current event concerning a Toms River curfew law for children. Quickly, the eager writers
learned the art of persuasion by hosting classroom debates; this eventually segued into writing
persuasive essays.
After being inspired by Mr. Roth’s motivational assembly, students composed explanatory essays in
which they related their lives to rapper Drake’s catchphrase, “Y.O.L.O.” Each student interpreted “you
only live once,” and provided a personal scenario in which he or she learned to value his or her life.
Students have been amused with the “Musical Writing Chairs,” which forces students to begin a
sentence or story, swap desks, and add coordinating conjunctions, adjectives, adverbs, and other
details to create complete sentences and stories. After reviewing for the N.J. ASK, we are anticipating
our nature walk, poetry, and rap units! Miss Betz is thrilled with her students’ achievements!
CYCLE 71
Cycle 71 has had a great year so far. All of the students are wonderful, and we are having a busy year.
The students are all actively engaged in cycle activities and participating in classroom lessons. As a
whole our cycle has been working hard to earn points for the Rocket Race to the Top Challenge and
have been collectively working towards a common goal.
In Language Arts, we have had a busy year of reading and writing. To begin the year, we worked on
becoming better writers using the 6 Traits of Writing. Each trait had its own activities to encourage
each person to become a lifelong writer. Students have been working on various styles of writing as
well, including persuasive essays, speculative essays, and responses to quotes. We have read a few
novels this year including The Outsiders; Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie; and And Then There Were
None. The classes have also been working diligently to improve their grammar. They have learned
how to diagram sentences, and have worked on the different parts of speech. Although this is
challenging, the students are picking it up quickly. Overall, the year has been a success up to this
point, and we all look forward to continuing getting to know each other, having fun, and learning in
the process.
In Social Studies this year we have started to learn a great deal of the world around us. We started the
year with some geography skills that we have continued to use as we study the many regions of the
world. One of our favorite things to do during our Enrichment period is to watch and discuss CNN
Student News. Our first stop in our studies of the western hemisphere was the region of Europe. We
have completed our study of Europe and also our study of Latin America. We will end our year by
studying Canada and the United States. As our year draws to a close we will prepare for our last
quarterly exam and begin to look forward to eighth grade.
This year in science cycle 71 is discovering the human body, physics, forces in Earth, and our ocean’s
waters. The students enjoyed dissecting frogs, making crystals, racing mouse trap cars and now pet
rocks. We will be having a new science club for the students of cycle 71, and all are invited. The
requirement to join is to have all of their homework completed for all academic classes and design a
project. The first project will be an egg drop out of our second story window. The other projects
include volcanoes and making ice cream. Science is the class to learn about yourself and your world.
Science Rules!
The students of cycle 71 have been working diligently through five math books this year. They spent
time planning a bike trip using basic algebra skills in Variables and Patterns, learning about positive
and negative numbers in Accentuate the Negative, advancing their algebra skills through graphing and
equation writing and solving in Moving Straight Ahead, similarity and geometry concepts in
Stretching and Shrinking, and understanding and interpreting data using ratios, proportions and
percents in Comparing and Scaling. In preparation for the New Jersey ASK 7 exam, students are
reviewing their math skills and previous concepts. As we finish the year, students will be learning
more about geometry in Filling and Wrapping, completing the year with a special project. Students
have enjoyed working together in groups, and will continue to expand their skills throughout the
remainder of the year.
CYCLE 73 “Hold your ground, we'll hit the sky
It's time you aim your arrows high” from “Fire” by Verseamerge
Cycle 73 is aiming for the stars; we hope all of our students hold fast to their commitment to
excellence!
![Page 7: Intermediate East Rocket Blast - Toms River …After several months of hard work and dedication, under the direction of Ms. Michelle Neuhoff, the assistant direction of Mrs. Jenny](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022082912/5f03cb7c7e708231d40ace6b/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
In Science . . . our students have already learned about human anatomy. With all that was learned, the
kids were able to create some great projects on the digestive process and replicas of a lung diaphragm.
It was wonderful to watch their creativity shine through! We recently started working on physics, and
we are looking forward to learning about machines . . . we get to build rubber band cars! Who do you
think will win the great car race?? You can easily see how our students will be learning about kinetic
and potential energy. We will also be learning about delicious thermal energy. Making rice crispy
treats to prove different types of thermal energy will incorporate all of that information! Did you ever
imagine science could be so appetizing? There’s even more! In the next few weeks, our students will
get to experience frog dissection. These students make it so much fun to learn through applied
activities. Dr. Piznik is so proud of all her students!
In Math . . . students are gearing up for future careers as engineers, mathematicians and financiers.
They are studying surface area and volume. The kids enjoy it so much. Projects and graphing help
build hands-on knowledge. Mrs. Reardon’s Math class is radical!
In Social Studies . . . . cycle 73’s most recent project was an essay about Mexico. Students had to
write as if they were traveling in Mexico. They learned about the activities, climate, geography and
points of interest there. They were able to summarize their learning in a way that would persuade the
most steadfast homebody to take a trip there tomorrow. Currently, students are working on learning all
about the exotic lands of South America including heritage, politics, and economy. In Miss Lidon’s
Social Studies class, kids can sit back and enjoy a trip around the world!
In Language Arts . . . we have been expanded our reading curriculum by reading some great young
adult literature. Stories like Stormbreaker and Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie have been keeping our
interests piqued, and allowing us to vicariously experience a tremendous amount of situations and
places. Themes such as friendship and good over evil have been discussed. Reading not only builds
our knowledge, but expands our empathy for others in our community and world. We will continue
with more realistic fiction towards the end of the year with the greatly anticipated reading of The
Outsiders. Sixty years after being published by a 15-year-old girl, the novel is still timely with its
insights into the harms of stereotyping. The students will be enjoying the action and ideas presented in
this literary work while discussing elements of literature and learning new concepts. Before this classic
though, the kids have been able to share a little bit of their likes and personality by actively writing
and creating various types of essays and stories. Thanks to all my students and parents for helping to
make this a great year!
SKI CLUB
The Ski Club is one of Intermediate East’s largest clubs. The philosophy of the club is to expose and
teach our students an exhilarating sport that they will be able to enjoy for a lifetime. It enables those
students whose families don’t ski an opportunity to learn.
This year we traveled to local mountains in New York and Pennsylvania. New to us this year was our
trip to Hunter Mountain, NY. It’s been added to our list of favorites which include Wyndam
Mountain, NY and Jack Frost Mountain, PA. We also travel regularly to Belleayre Mt, NY and
Alpine, PA.
Even though we didn’t have a lot of snow this past winter, we were still able to enjoy ourselves on the
slopes. Most resorts make their own snow, so along with the little snow-fall we had; they were able to
keep the trails covered.
