2019 Summer Intern Fellowship ProgramApplication

Program Definition: The Furman University Summer Intern Fellowship Program provides competitive fellowships to students who obtain full-time summer internships (e.g., 35-40 hours/week for a minimum of 8 continuous weeks) or summer research internships with faculty at academic institutions other than Furman and that meet the eligibility and criteria guidelines of the program.

Instructions:In order to be considered for funding, students who have obtained and finalized an internship for the summer of 2019 must complete this form in full by March 1, 2019 and submit it to [email protected].

The application includes three sections: Student Application (required) & Budget Form (optional) Organization Form (required) Furman Faculty Recommendation Form (required)

Please note that only applications that have all three sections completed will be evaluated for funding – it is the student’s responsibility to ensure the Internship Office receives all of their information in a timely manner.

Criteria: The application will be evaluated based on:

The internship experience as well as the quality of the information provided in the application. The student and the internship site supervisor must describe how the experience meets high impact practice

criteria for engaged learning experiences contained in Appendix A.

Eligibility: Preference for Summer 2019 Intern Fellowships will be given to students who will graduate in December 2019 or

May 2020, then to students who will have another summer to pursue an internship during their time at Furman. Students must be returning to Furman as a full-time student after their internship to be eligible for the Fellowship.

For students enrolled in a May Experience course, the eight weeks of full-time work devoted to this internship will begin after the end of May Experience. Students not enrolled in May Experience may begin their internship during May or June.

The Fellowship program does not fund workshops, institutes, travel study programs, courses, or other learning experiences in which the primary purpose is to expand one’s knowledge/skills.

International internships in Level 3 & 4 countries on the State Department Travel Advisories List or on the Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Foreign Assists Control (OFAC) website are prohibited. Consideration for international internships in Level 3 countries on the State Department Travel Advisories List will require an appeal made to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs to demonstrate understanding of the Level 3 advisory precautions.

Receiving a Fellowship does not prohibit students from participating in a Furman University summer internship course. Students must consult individual academic departments for the course requirements. Students who apply and want to take other summer courses (beyond the Furman internship course) must include course information in the application and explain how the student plans to meet the requirements of both the internship and the course work during the summer.

Stipends: Stipend amounts awarded to the student vary based on the amount of funding provided by the sponsoring

organization and the student’s demonstration of financial need. The base stipend will be:

criteria outlined above are eligible for Furman campus housing throughout the duration of the experience at a highly discounted rate.

Applications for summer housing are available in January and due in early April. More information is available on Furman’s Residence Life home page.
