    Setting the scene

What do you enjoy about studying Māori Performing Arts?

What have you learnt so far in your Māori Performing Arts journey?

What skills can you use in performance to best demonstrate and showcase Māori Performing Arts?

    What you need to do

In a group (this may be any size, your whole class or just two people) plan a performance of Māori Performing Arts for an event.

Your kaiako will help you to select pieces, these must include:

mōteatea of at least 30 seconds

one other discipline of at least 30 seconds

Your pieces should showcase key, distinctive features of Māori Performing Arts.

Rehearse your pieces. Wānanga with your group to solve problems and work out how to enhance your performance.

Your performance will be in keeping with the style of the disciplines you have selected.

Your performance will be accurate and show confidence, conviction and intensity.

    What evidence you will provide

A performance of two Māori Performing Arts disciplines, of at least 30 seconds each. The kaiako will need to be present at the event.

The performance will be recorded for moderation purposes.

  • Teacher guidelines 1.2c

AS 1.2 Perform two Māori Performing Arts disciplines

You may need to assist your students in their choice of items (which specific mōteatea for instance) for the two disciplines they will perform. While each discipline needs to be performed for a minimum of 30 seconds to meet the standard, the performance should start and finish at appropriate points in the composition, it should not simply cut off after 30 seconds. If you wish to collect evidence for this standard from part of a longer performance activity, this is acceptable, however, students should be assessed on the quality of their performance and not on the length of time they perform for.
