PREFACE
The Government College of Teacher Education, Kozhikode, formerly
known as Government Training College was started in June 1950 with a view to
impart Teacher Training at the secondary level. In the beginning, the college
functioned in the premises of Government Victoria College, Palakkad with its
affiliation to the University of Madras. The college was shifted to the present
campus an area of 3.90 acres, on 15th May 1951. The campus is located in the
heart of Calicut city, caressed by the gentle breeze from the elegant Mananchira
fresh pond. In July 1957, the college got affiliated to the University of Kerala for
the B.T. Course. The degree offered became B.Ed since the year 1959. The
college got affiliated to the University of Calicut in 1968-69, consequent to the
formation of the University of Calicut as per the ordinance 5/- 68 of the Governor
of Kerala. The institution was upgraded and renamed as Government College of
Teacher Education by the Ministry of Human Resource Development,
Government of India, on 29th August 1992.
The college is recognized under 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC act with its
affiliation to the University of Calicut and NCTE, Southern Regions, Bangalore.
The Institution is under the administrative control of the Directorate of Collegiate
Education of the Government of Kerala.
B.Ed course is offered here in 9 subjects – Arabic, English, Hindi,
Malayalam, Mathematics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Sanskrit and Social
Science. The year 2010 was an ever memorable one in the history of the college.
The long cherished ambition of starting PG course (M.Ed) in Education was
realised during this year. Students are admitted through the Centralized Allotment
Process, the total intake being 120 students for B.Ed and 25 for M.Ed. The infra
structural and instructional facilities provide opportunities for the trainees to
enhance their learning experiences. The institution endeavours to create an
ii
environment of sustainable development to explore and comprehend diverse ideas
and innovative strategies, through a wide range of facilities, both instructional and
infrastructural. Well equipped labs, partially automated library with more than
sixteen thousand books, a well maintained Health club, Guidance Cell, Placement
Cell and Counselling Centre are the assets of the college, which are being used by
both the M.Ed and B.Ed Departments.
A multi disciplinary approach is provided to the students through the study
of Philosophical, Sociological and Psychological foundation in Education, ICT,
Communicative English and Educational Research and statistics. The pedagogic
park with a seating capacity of 120 is a venue for seminars and outdoor classes.
The curriculum provides ample opportunities for reflective practices through
Micro teaching, Observation and Criticism lessons and Action Research. Care is
taken to ensure that learning is made Student Centered by enabling students to
construct knowledge through cooperative and collaborative learning. Participatory
learning activities provided, include project works, Seminar presentations,
Discussions, Work shop Practices, Self and peer evaluation, Club activities,
Community living camps, Study tours, Buzz sessions, Extension activities and the
like.
The college was visited and assessed by the NAAC Peer Team comprising
of two members on 9th, 10th and 11th June 2008. The college was declared
accredited on September 16th 2008 with CGPA of 3.16 on 4 point scale at ‘A’
grade, the highest rating given by NAAC. As a part of Post Accreditation Quality
Sustenance Measure, the institution established an Internal Quality Assessment
Cell, so as to develop realistic and attainable quality bench marks for each
academic and administrative activity.
About the emblem
The emblem has been designed with a lighted traditional lamp surrounded
by spikes of paddy. The traditional lighted oil lamp of the emblem symbolizes the

transition from ignorance to wisdom and spikes of paddy signify prosperity of the
society.
Motto
The Motto of the college is a verse from the Bhagavath Gita ‘Uddhared
atmana tmanam’ the corresponding English verse is ‘One should lift up the self by
the self’

IQAC
The composition of the I.Q.A.C was the outcome of well thought out plan,
with a full fledged team of faculty members under the chairmanship of the
Principal Smt. Mary Xavier. The cell was integrated with all the other departments
and colleges administration.

The cell organizes a meeting at the start of each academic year to chalk out
the various activities to be carried out by IQAC. The programs envisioned by
IQAC are put into action by the joint effort of each member, nominees from local
society, well-wishers, the entire staff and students of the institution. Periodical
follow up meetings are held to review the progress and to check the degree to
which each task has been fulfilled.

PART A
To constitute a Programme Advisory Committee for chalking out and monitoring
the day to day activities of the college
The Programme Advisory Committee under the Chairmanship of the District
Collector was constituted and various programmes both academic and co-curricular were
chalked out for achieving the goals of the institution.
To introduce innovative Programmes in curricular activities
Curriculum transaction was made through Critical Pedagogy and Social
constructivism. All faculty members contributed towards designing issue based curriculum
and innovations in Critical Pedagogy. Faculty members took part in Workshops for text
book preparation conducted by SCERT. Resources were extended for In Service course and
IMG Training Programmes.
To conduct Seminars/Workshops with the financial aid of the UGC and other
agencies
An amount of Rs.17.50 lakhs was sanctioned to the Govt. College of Teacher
Education, Kozhikode by the Director of Collegiate Education, Kerala. Thirteen in service
Programmes in the different subjects Arabic, English, Guidance and Counselling, Hindi,
Malayalam, Mathematics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Sanskrit, Social Science and
Urdu were conducted during the months of January & February 2010. Duration of the
course was 10 days for each course.
Seven Seminars were conducted apart from the 4 Seminars conducted by the M.Ed
Department. Two Empowerment Programmes, 3 Film shows, one Puppet show, One
Science Drama and 3 different Quiz Competitions were conducted. The whole – hearted
support of all faculty members made the whole programme a grand success.

To provide academic support to students of nearby schools.
Academic support was given to students of nearby schools through school Induction
Programme and Practice Teaching of B.Ed Trainees. Department of Mathematics
conducted free NET/SET coaching to students from other institutions on 5th, 6th, & 7th April
2010. The Mathematics Department donated Teaching aids to nearby L.P. School of
Karaparamba.
To start In Service Course for Secondary Level teachers in all subjects, with the
assistance of MHRD, Government of India.
Govt. of India, MHRD of school Education and Literacy sanctioned an amount of
Rs.93.77 lakhs and released Rs.70 lakh as the first instalment to 3 Govt. Training colleges
and IASE, Thrissur for conducting In-Service course and Action Research, Faculty
Development and meeting the expenditure towards salaries under 100% CSS. Accordingly
an amount of Rs.17.50 lakhs was sanctioned to the College of Teacher Education,
Kozhikode and 13 In-Service Courses in various subjects were conducted with duration of
10 days during the month of January and February 2010. The feedback received from the
stake holders reveals that the courses were very useful for improving their subject
competence and teaching skills.
To strengthen the ties between the institution and community through health
camps and orientation programmes
Department of Mathematics conducted free NET/SET Coaching classes for students
of other institutions on 5th, 6th and 7th April 2010. They also donated learning aids to nearby
L.P. School of Karaparamba. The Department of Physical Science collected clothes and
donated it to the poor and needy families of CMC colony situated near the college. An
awareness class on significance of blood donation was conducted in the college on
04/03/2010 and the blood group of all staff and students was detected in a camp and a blood
group directory was formed in the college.

To conduct Seminars/Workshops for students, teacher educators and carry out
institutional project
Seven Seminars were conducted in the College by making use of various funds
including PTA and 4 Seminars were on behalf of the Department of M.Ed. Two
empowerment Programmes and film shows, Puppet show, Science dramas and Quiz
competitions were organised in the college.
On going UGC Research Project was completed and report submitted on
31/03/2010.
To issue Health Cards for all students for creating awareness of health and
Physical fitness
The health status of 80 students were assessed through an experimental project
under the initiative of Sri. K.P. Hussain, Associate Professor, Physical Education.
To Set up a Satellite Interactive Terminal in the College
A proposal was submitted to the UGC to set up a Satellite Interactive Terminal in
the College.
Setting up of a digitalised library comprising of e-books e-journals and a
structured local area net work
A proposal was submitted to MHRD for digitalising the library. Purchase order was
placed for the supply of books for an amount of Rs.33876 under UGC fund. Three journals
were subscribed by PTA fund and two additional journals were subscribed by making use of
UGC fund.
Providing a CCTV to monitor the classes
The proposal was given under Plan Fund for providing a CCTV to monitor the
classes without distractions in the class room.

PART B
1) Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the Institution
The whole teaching learning process is planned and executed according to the goals
and objectives of the institution. Students are equipped so as to follow modern instructional
strategies based on social constructivism and critical pedagogy. These strategies reflect
managerial skills, leadership quality, self discipline and group dynamics. The college union
plays a major role in planning and executing the college activities, thereby enabling the
trainees to develop these skills. Opportunities are provided to internalize the modern
psychological principles through direct practice. Separate hours are allotted to internalize
the theory through experimentation in the psychology lab.
The institution transacts the curriculum based on the principles of constructivist
approach. Collaborative learning and critical pedagogy are an essential part of it.
Opportunities are also provided to the students to interact with experts from various
disciplines. Seminars are also conducted on modern pedagogical strategies.
The institution provides instructional and human resource support to the local
educational institutions, research scholars, teachers and educationists. The infra structural
facilities are also made available for educational, social and cultural activities. For the
effective transaction of the curriculum the institution utilizes modern technology like
language lab, computer lab, internet facility, CD ROMS, Video projector, LCD projector,
OHP and partially automated library. The institution provides well equipped Health Club
and Recreation Club for inculcating health related physical fitness activities. Training and
enthusiastic promotion is given to students for taking part in various sports events. The
institution provides special facilities for girl students for their recreation and other personal
needs.
Student friendly conducive and democratic approach is ensured through the
activities of the college union, various clubs, subject associations, community living camps,
study tour, field work and workshop practices. Through grievance and redress mechanism,
students can voice their complaints if any. Students are always free to approach the

Principal and faculty members of the institution. They share their joys, sorrows and
problems with the faculty and hence there is a deep and divine bond between the teacher
and the taught. Guidance and Counselling cell functions actively to guide the trainees in
career and personal/emotional problems. The institution has an anti-ragging cell which
functions actively without any sort of complaints regarding a ragging case in the campus.
Modern trends in planning and evaluation form a part of the curriculum. Modern
trends are reflected in various academic planning like Year Plan, Unit Plan and different
modes of lesson plan. The institution follows Continuous and Comprehensive evaluation
process. Peer and Self evaluation are also done. The trainees are equipped to follow the
grading system of secondary schools. During the internship period, the same evaluation
system is put into practice by the teacher trainees in the school. Contemporary issues that
need attention are discussed by students in buzz sessions, seminars and debates.
The institution provides opportunities to inculcate desirable values in students
through various activities like observation of important days, field visits, workshops,
debates, seminars, annual games and sports and by preparing value based lesson plans.
The linkage between institution and community is strengthened by organizing
community living camps, cleaning public places, blood group detection camp, visit to
Juvenile home, Old age homes, Mercy homes and extending help both in cash and kind to
the deserved. A survey was conducted on the adjustment problems of inmates of old age
homes. The institution provided uniform dress materials and academic support to the
deserving students of the lab school. An exhibition on nature was conducted under the
auspices of Eco Club. Environmental day was observed by cleaning the campus and
planting saplings. The campus has been declared as Plastic Free Zone. Eco friendly carry
bags made of cloth were distributed to the public.
2) New academic program initiated, (UG, PG)
The institution realised its long cherished dream to start M.Ed course in the year
2010. The PG course in Education was started with an intake capacity of 25 students,
selected through an entrance examination conducted by the University of Calicut.

31-08-2010 was an ever memorable day in the history of Govt. College of Teacher
Education. It was on this fortunate day, the college started its first PG course in Education.
The course was formally inaugurated by the then Hon.MLA Sri. Pradeep Kumar. Smt.
Mary Xavier, Principal delivered the welcome speech. The auspicious function was
presided by the Deputy Mayor Sri. PT. Abdul Latheef, Sri. K.Balakrishnan, President
Alumni and Sri. R.Suresh Kumar, Assistant Professor, rendered their felicitations with
immense pleasure. The function was a colourful and a grand one.
3) Innovation in curricular design and transaction
The curriculum is designed by the University of Calicut to which it is affiliated to.
The institution has no right to change the curriculum. However it can offer suggestions and
contribute in framing and re-structuring the curriculum of university. Curriculum
transaction is through critical Pedagogy and Social constructivism. The faculty members
play a decisive role in designing issue based curriculum and innovations in critical
pedagogy. The faculty members take part in workshops for text book preparation conducted
by SCERT. Some faculty members are resource persons for inservice courses and IMG
Training Programmes.
4) Interdisciplinary Programmes started
With an aim to familiarise the interesting aspects and recent trends in each optional
subject to the students of other disciplines, short sessions are conducted on rotational basis
under the banner of each subject association and M. Ed. They are transacted through
seminars, quiz programme/Book review power point presentation, film clippings, dramas,
Board display and news bulletin. These programs served to instil in the students an
awareness, interest and knowledge of the basic and important underlying principles of each
discipline.

5) Examination reforms implemented
The university lays down separate rules and regulations for the conduct of
examination. Equal weightage is given for internal and external evaluation for B.Ed
curriculum. The aggregate marks obtained in theory papers and practical is considered for
determining the class. Candidates who have completed all the 16 items specified under the
head ‘PRACTICALS’ alone are eligible to appear the theory and practical examination.

Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of
School Education and Literacy sanctioned an amount of Rs.93.77 lakhs and released Rs.70
lakhs as the first instalment to the 3 Govt. Training Colleges and IASE Thrissur for
conducting In service course and Action Research, Faculty Development and meeting the
expenditure towards salaries under 100% centrally sponsored scheme. Accordingly as per
the proceedings of the Director of Collegiate Education, Thiruvananthapuram Order
No.P3/39023/09/Coll. Edn. dated 22-01-2010 an amount of Rs.17.50 lakhs was sanctioned
to Govt. College of Teacher Education, Kozhikode and it was decided to conduct short term
in-service courses for High School Teachers in various subjects. The formal inauguration
of the course was on 27-01-2010. Details of the In-service course conducted in the college

Statistical Techniques adopted in the study.
Test of significance of difference between means –t test is used.
Major Findings of the Study:
1. Walking group have significant improvement in cardio vascular efficiency, abdominal
strength endurance and shoulder strength.
2. Flexibility of low back and posterior thigh has significant improvement among
yogasanas group.
3. Body composition and resting the heart rate have no significant changes among all the
groups.
4. The training group ‘yogasanas’ and ‘yogasanas and walking’ group showed significant
changes in Blood Glucose.
5. There was no significant change in the case of triglyceride.
6. HDL – Cholesterol in the blood has significantly improved among the walking group,
yogasanas group, and walking group.
7. The LDL – cholesterol in the blood has significantly reduced by walking and yogasanas
group.
8. The VLDL cholesterol in the blood has not significantly reduced among the four groups.
9. In the case of TC/HDL the walking group, yogasanas group, and the yogasanas and
walking group have reduced significantly.

The college functions on the strong support of a PTA and an Alumni Association.
The institution generated internal resources through various means. The Department of

Physical Science made 5 bottles of cleaning solution and donated it to the office. Income
generated through PTA by the college is nearly 2.5 lakhs/year. The income generated
through Alumni Association is nearly Rs.34,000/-
Minor repairs of Electrical and Electronic gadgets like Public Address System,
Ceiling Fans, Photo Copier, Printer etc are occasionally undertaken by office staff and
students which saved a minor income generated through the supporting bodies.

18) Community Services
Community provides opportunities for trainees to undertake meaningful activities
and out reach Programmes so as to develop social orientation and service mentality. The
Department of Mathematics conducted free NET/SET coaching classes for the trainees of
the college as well as students from other institutions on 5th, 6th and 7th April 2010. About
10 students participated in the course. The resource person was Sri. Gopalakrishnan. The
Department also donated learning aids in Mathematics to the nearby L.P. School of
Karaparamba. The Department of Physical Science collected clothes from the staff and
students of the college and donated it to the poor and needy families of CMC Colony
situated near the college. The trainees also conducted a survey of the adjustment problems
of the inmates of the old age home, Juvenile Home and Pratheeksha Bhavan, Thavanoor and
extended help both in cash and kind.

Assessment of teachers by students is introduced in the college by making use of a 5
point scale. This is to ensure effective teaching and learning and accountability and healthy

26) Computerisation of administration and the process of admission and
examination results, issue of certificates
The computerisation and administration is under way. Work relating to admission is
done through Centralised Allotment Process of Government of Kerala for B.Ed and through
an entrance examination conducted by the University of Calicut for M.Ed Examination
processes, ranks, issue of mark lists. Professional Certificate, Degree Certificate are totally
regulated by the University of Calicut. However the institution issues computerized Course
and Conduct Certificates. It is the objective of the college to set up personal computers for
each staff of the institution so as to attain excellence in performance.
27) Increase in Infrastructure
Twenty five Wooden Jefferson chairs, one wooden podium, 25 wooden property
counter, one wooden table, one arm chair, one wooden almirah for M.Ed department, 100
plastic chairs for the mini auditorium, water cooler were purchased during the year. Apart
from this, about forty chairs, 22 tables, 12 desks and 3 wooden cots were repaired and made
fit for use in college and hostel.

The college has modern information and communication technology to enrich
learning experiences of the beneficiaries. The college has adequate number of computer
system and its accessories which are made available to both teaching staff, non teaching
staff and students. Faculty members make use of LCD, for supporting the Lecture class.

The staff and students have free access to computer and internet facilities in the
college. At present internet facilities are made available in the office, library and staff
cabin. Computer training in Power point presentation, Micro soft Word, is given to students.

31) Activities and Support from Alumni
The institution has a very strong Alumni Association functioning under the
leadership of Dr. R. Krishnakumari. The various activities conducted are the following.
Quiz Competition:
An inter collegiate quiz competition was organised by the association on
25/02/2010. Seven teacher trainees took part in the competition. In a tight competition that
followed team representing Devaki Amma Memorial College of Teacher Education,
Chelembra emerged as the winner. A cash prize of Rs.1001/- was awarded to them. The
runner up was given a cash prize of Rs.751/-. The prize was distributed in the Alumni Day

celebrations on 09/03/2010. The chief guest for the day was Dr.K.Ida Nancy former
Principal of the college
Sri. Karimpuzha Ramakrishnan Memorial Talk:
The Sri. Karimpuzha Ramakrishnan Memorial Talk was delivered by Sri.Kunju
Moosa and Prof. T.P. Kunhikannan, Govt. College, Perambra addressed the gathering.
Financial assistance:
Alumini association also lent a helping hand to Vineetha, former B.Ed student
(Physical Science) whose husband was severely injured in an accident and was undergoing
treatment. The association collected Rs.28000/- and the same was handed over to her at her
residence on 31/03/2010 by the Principal, Dr. B.H.Helen Joy and staff representatives.
32) Activities and support from Parent Teacher Association
The institution has a strong PTA. College PTA has always functioned as a body to
protect the interests of students in curricular and non curricular activities. It is functioning
very effectively. One or two general body meetings, more than three executive meetings are
held every year.
Regular meeting of the PTA was held in the College, PTA takes strong measures to
recruit guest faculties on contract basis, to keep the continuity of academic process going
smoothly. Financial assistance to Campus cleaning, Financial support to conduct
examinations (B.Ed & M.Ed) Theory and Practical, Financial assistance to Poor students,
Financial support for participation in the B.Zone Inter collegiate festival, Payment for
extension lectures, public utilities and day to day expenses are made out of PTA funds.
Records are properly maintained and accounted, audited and presented at the annual general
body meeting. It also provides financial support for publication of the college journal and
magazine. The expenses for subscribing educational Journals are also met by PTA.
Community Living Camp, Activities of College Union, work related to IQ AC, website
updating, repair of broken furniture are also met from the PTA.

33) Health Services
Awareness class on significance of blood donation
An awareness program on the significance of blood donation was conducted in the
college on 04/03/2010 by Mr.Ashokan Alapurath, President, Blood Donors Form,
Kozhikode. Doubts of students regarding blood donation was cleared.
Formation of Blood Group Directory
The blood group of all staff and students was detected in a camp held in the college.
The Camp was inaugurated by the Principal Smt. Mary Xavier. This was documented
carefully and converted into a Blood group directory. The initiative for this was taken by
Dr. K. Indira. The health status of 80 students were assessed through an experimental study.
The initiative for this was taken by Sri. K.P. Hussain, Associate Professor, Physical
Education.
34) Performance in sports Activities
Smt. Remya, of Social Science optional represented Kalari team for National Kalari
Championship. Sports meet was held in the college where almost every student participated
in at least one item. Javelin throw, Shot Put Relay 100/200 metres race, high jump, long
jump etc were conducted.

was held in the College on 16-09-2010. The Programme was meant for creating
legal awareness among student teachers and teacher educators. Smt.T.Devi,
Member, Kerala Vanitha Commission was the resource person. The hardships faced
by Women and its legal aspects were discussed in detail. This was followed by an
interactive session were the students shared their experiences and cleared their

42) Action taken on the report of the AQAR of the previous year
The staff members reviewed the Internal Quality Assurance Report of 2008-2009
and chalked out a plan of action to ensure the internal quality of the institution for the year
2009-2010. Accordingly a partially digitalised library was set up. Innovative Programmes
in curricular activities, Seminars, Workshops were organised. As a part of Technology up
gradation the M.Ed classroom was equipped with a Computer with internet facility.

The College, a heritage institution located in a campus of 3.90 acres still functions in
the same building which was constructed in the year 1912. The Govt. College of Teacher
Education formerly known as Govt. Training College was started in the year 1950. The
College was shifted to the present campus on May 15th 1951. In 1957 the college got
affiliated to University of Kerala to the B.T. course. The college has been offering B.Ed
course since 1959. The college got affiliated to the University of Calicut in the year 1968-
69 and was upgraded and renamed as Government College of Teacher Education by the
Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India on 29th August 1992. The
institution realised its long cherished dream to start M.Ed course in the year 2010.
The PG course in Education was started with an intake capacity of 25 students selected
through an entrance examination conducted by the University of Calicut.

Initiated steps to enhance the intake capacity of M Ed students from 25 to 35
To introduce innovative programs in curricular activities
Renew the affiliation of M Ed Course for the coming year
Conduct seminars/ workshop/ In Service course with financial assistance of PTA/
UGC/ Plan fund and other agencies
To make available the assistance of UGC to conduct various programs under Equal
Opportunity Cell.
To oversee the effective implementation of policies and programs for disadvantaged
groups to provide guidance and counselling with respect to academic, financial,
social and other matters and to enhance the diversity within the campus
To provide extension services and community service.
To provide special academic support to the needy students.
Technology upgradation.
Enhance facilities in the library and laboratory
Strengthen the functioning of Alumni association, Guidance Cell, Placement Cell
PTA
To develop linkage between Schools and the college through School Induction
Programs /Practice teaching of B Ed trainees.
To update college Web site
To motivate students/ Faculty to publish papers in national/ International journals.
To obtain continuous feedback on regular basis from students, Alumni/Stake
holders.
To conduct programs as per the Academic Calendar
To maintain plastic free, green environment within the campus.
