BACKGROUNDThe natural rubber (NR) industry is a significant contributor to the global economy. Many rubber

products depend on NR for their quality performance. More than 60% of the world’s production of NR

goes into the tyre sector. In fact some products such as the aviation tyres depend fully on the supply of

NR for their production.

Over the years, the world has sometimes witnessed uncertainties in the supply of NR. Much of the

uncertainties have been attributed to the NR price volatility. Despite various initiatives at the global and

regional levels to intervene to stabilise prices, price volatility continues to be an issue . The fact indicates

that every 4-5 years, NR prices decline and the most severe is in the recent period.

The highs and lows of NR prices are now accepted as a reality by the industry. It is time to think of

better ways to cope with that reality. An option that has been widely considered is to venture

downstream and invest in the manufacture of value added products. With the rise in the global green

economy, venturing downstream makes it attractive for NR because as an industrial elastomer, it meets

all the requirements of a green material.

In upstream sector continuous efforts to reach higher productivity and cost efficiency are

appropriate strategies to cope volatile NR price. New findings in high yielding clones, harvesting

technologies, manufacturing and other agronomic practises are essential also to ensure sustainability

of NR industry.

This conference in conjunction with World Plantation Conference and Exhibition 2017 (WPLACE

2017) provides an opportunity to deliberate on the current issues and future challenges focusing on the

theme “Current and Future Challanges in Natural Rubber Industry: Capturing Opportunities in

The Green Economy”.
