Abstract:TheUnitedStatesparticipates in twomajor internationalassessments:TheTrendsinMathandScienceStudy(TIMSS)andtheProgramforInternationalStudentAssessment(PISA).ThistalkwillfocusontrendsinU.S.performanceonthetwotests,discussmythsthatarecommoninmedia coverage and public perception of test results, and present potentially controversialissuesthatarelurkingonthehorizon.
Bio:TomLovelessholdsaPhDineducationfromtheUniversityofChicago,anMAin special education fromCalifornia StateUniversity, Sacramento, and anAB inEnglish fromtheUniversityofCalifornia, Berkeley.From1979 to1988, LovelesswasaclassroomteacherintheSanJuanUnifiedSchoolDistrict,nearhishometownofSacramento,servingonnumerousstateandlocalcurriculumcommittees.AfterreceivinghisPh.D. in1992,hejoined thefacultyofHarvardUniversity’s JohnF.KennedySchoolofGovernment,whereheservedasbothassistantandassociateprofessorsofpublicpolicyuntil1999.LovelesswasselectedasaNationalAcademyofEducationSpencerPost-DoctoralFellowin1995.From2004to2012,Lovelessrepresented the United States at the General Assembly of the InternationalAssociationfortheEvaluationofEducationalAttainment,a60-nationorganizationthatgovernsinternationaltesting.From2006to2008heservedonthePresident'sNationalMathematicsAdvisoryPanel.LovelesswasamemberoftheKoretTaskForceonK-12EducationattheHooverInstitution,StanfordUniversityfrom2008to2014.Lovelesshasauthoredarticles in theWilsonQuarterly,EducationNext,American Journal of Education, Educational Policy, Educational Leadership,Educational Administration Quarterly, and Educational Evaluation and PolicyAnalysis. His op-eds have been published in The Christian ScienceMonitor, LosAngelesTimes,WallStreetJournal,Newsday,TheWashingtonPost,USAWeekend,TheNewYorkTimesandEducationWeek.
