This conference belongs to a series of events sponsored by the Centre for Christian Education & Pastoral Theology (Liverpool Hope University) and the National Institute for Christian Education Research (Canterbury Christ Church University).

Call for papersSubmissions to present research papers on Christian Education are invited. A diversity of approaches is welcome including empirical, philosophical and theological. Submissions from those working for a research degree are particularly encouraged.

Papers will be circulated to delegates in advance of the conference. Presenters will be allowed up to 20 minutes to summarise their paper with the bulk of the session given to critical discussion. Presenters are asked to give particular attention to the intellectual foundations of their presentation.

An abstract of up to 300 words should be submitted to Dr Ros Stuart-Buttle at [email protected] by Friday 8th April 2016. Notice of acceptance of a paper will be made by Monday 25th April 2016.

Main SpeakersProfessor David Ford, OBE (University of Cambridge)

Title: Healthy Pluralism, Christian Depth

David Ford is Regius Professor of Divinity Emeritus at the University of Cambridge

and Chairperson of the Theological Reference Group which has been set up to lead the development of a renewed vision for the Church of England’s involvement in education. His was awarded the Coventry International Prize for Peace and Reconciliation in 2012. His current research interests include the shaping of universities and of the field of theology and religious studies within them. His many books include Self and Salvation, Christian Wisdom, Shaping Theology, Engagements in a Religious and Secular World, The Shape of Living, and The Drama of Living.

Dr Clare Watkins (University of Roehampton)

Title: The Faith-full Intellect: Learning from pre-modern theology for a late modern pedagogy

Clare Watkins is a Lecturer in Ministerial Theology at the University of Roehampton. Her teaching and research interests are in the areas of ecclesiology, sacramental theology and practical theology with a particular concern for working theologically in ways that contribute to ministerial formation and church life and mission. She has recently worked as co-investigator in the Heythrop Institute research on the Visions for Educational Leadership project. Her recent writings include chapters on ‘Revelation, Scripture and Truth’ and ‘Education, Formation and Conscience’ in Education in a Catholic Perspective (eds. John Sullivan & Stephen McKinney, Ashgate, 2013).

Conference LocationThe conference begins on the afternoon of Friday 24th June and finishes after lunch on Sunday 26th June and will take place at the Hope Park campus of Liverpool Hope University.

Formed by the merger of Anglican and Roman Catholic teacher training colleges with histories going back over 170 years, Liverpool Hope is the only ecumenical university foundation in Europe. The University’s work has been shaped by Christian principles but embraces those of all faiths and none.

For those travelling from outside the UK: Liverpool is within easy reach of Manchester Airport. There are also direct train services between London Euston and Liverpool Lime Street stations taking approximately two and a quarter hours each way.
