2014INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHSeptember 23, 2014
WELCOME TO THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH 2014
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to the second International Conference
of Undergraduate Research. This conference offers a tremendous opportunity to
undergraduate students to debut their research on a global scale. Using video-
conference technology, students from across the world will connect to one another and
demonstrate the ingenuity, innovation, and imagination that often demarcates the
undergraduate researcher from any other scholar.
The conference first began as a collaboration between Monash and Warwick universities
under the auspices of the Monash-Warwick Alliance and has since grown to include
five new partners: Baruch College CUNY, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
Management University, the University of Washington, and the University of Western
Australia. We welcome these new collaborating institutions and their students, and
we look forward to hearing new voices from Perth, Singapore, New York, and Seattle.
Collectively, almost two hundred students will present their research on and off camera
to their peers, lecturers, and the broader community.
The students presenting today come from many different disciplinary backgrounds,
but are all academic peers dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. Their presentations,
drawing on months, even years of hard work, demonstrate the promise of the next
generation of researchers. This forum also provides undergraduate learners a platform
for the development of public speaking skills, as well as the ability to make their
research accessible to the intelligent observer – a crucial skill for those who will go on
to advocate solutions to the great challenges in our time that confront communities
across the world. Finally, the conference gives them the opportunity to form long-
lasting professional and personal links without the often prohibitive financial and
environmental costs of leaving their home institution, thus democratising international
experience for all students in an environmentally-responsible manner.
The conference is an informal environment in which presenters can establish themselves
as academic researchers and learn critical skills for their future careers. We hope
today’s conference will help presenters develop as scholars, gain transferable skills, and
continue onto success in their respective fields. ICUR is a transformational experience
and it is with my utmost support that I open the second International Conference of
Undergraduate Research.

ICUR 2014 FOUNDED BY THE MONASH-WARWICK ALLIANCE
WELCOME FROM THE STUDENT DIRECTORS COMMITTEE
WELCOME TO THE MONASH-WARWICK INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH 2013
ICUR 2014 FOUNDED BY THE MONASH-WARWICK ALLIANCE ICUR 2014 FOUNDED BY THE MONASH-WARWICK ALLIANCE
University of Western Australia
We at the ICUR Student Director Committee would like to personally welcome all of the presenters to the International
Conference of Undergraduate Research (ICUR) 2014. It is an exciting time as we are continuing to grow and in turn, bring
more students together to share academic research. For the first time, Monash University and the University of Warwick
will be joined by Singapore Management University, Nanyang Technological University, the University of Western Australia,
University of Washington and Baruch College, CUNY.
We are particularly honoured to be hosting stipend winners from Monash University and the University of Warwick. We
hope that the opportunity to fly to the counter university to present their research is a rewarding and immersive experience.
Likewise, the cross-university experience will be shared by students in the joint sessions. These sessions will link multiple
universities via innovative videoconferencing technology. Allowing students to interact and share knowledge across the
globe in real time, these sessions are an outstanding way of discovering what your peers are researching.
Given the high calibre of undergraduate students that have been selected to present research, we can expect to hear a
plethora of fascinating and insightful presentations. A diverse range of disciplines is also represented at ICUR. This gives
students a special chance to learn about topics outside respective chosen fields.
Our ambition is to equip students with skills that will allow them to excel on a global platform. This is by providing public
speaking and networking opportunities. We encourage all participants to foster international connections and engage with
each other at this academic forum. ICUR supports all undergraduate presenters and we are privileged to provide a space to
showcase such talent.
Finally, this conference would not have happened without the dedication of several key individuals. We offer special
acknowledgement to Dr Ernest Koh at Monash University and Caroline Gibson at the University of Warwick. We would also
like to thank Jessica O’Leary and Emma Barker for their leadership and energy in organising ICUR. Additionally, we thank all
the student directors and volunteers at each university for their commitment and most importantly, today’s undergraduate
presenters. ICUR provides global recognition of your academic achievements and we very much look forward to hearing
your presentations.

PROFESSOR ANDREW COATSJoint Academic Vice-President and Director of the Monash-Warwick Alliance
ICUR 2014 FOUNDED BY THE MONASH-WARWICK ALLIANCE ICUR 2014 FOUNDED BY THE MONASH-WARWICK ALLIANCE
BACKGROUNDIn 2007, the University of Warwick launched Reinvention in order to embrace the notion of academia as a community,
with students playing a strong and active role. The journal aimed to support students to become active researchers and
has worked for 7 years to provide undergraduate students, at universities around the world, with the opportunity to
become confident and articulate researchers, offering a platform from which they can demonstrate their research and
writing abilities.
REINVENTION AND MONASHIn 2012 the journal was launched as a joint venture between Warwick and Monash universities: half of our Assistant
Editors are based at Monash and the Editor position can be recruited from either institution. The journal teams over the
past two years have been at the forefront of collaboration between global hemispheres, successfully navigating new
communication technologies, web-based forums, and (very early or very late!) videoconferences taking place in vastly
different time zones.
REINVENTION TODAYReinvention is a truly unique offering in the world of undergraduate research. Published jointly by two major institutions, it
is run by both students and staff, accepts papers from all undergraduate students, in any subject, from any university in the
world, and publishes those that are passed through both a screening by our own editorial board and a double-blind peer
review from leading experts in relevant fields from around the globe. Since its inception, the journal has published over 150
undergraduates and almost 120 papers and has provided support to students through training workshops, via the journal
website and through one-to-one support when authors submit their papers for consideration.
REINVENTION AND ICURThe partnership of the Reinvention and ICUR is also unique. This innovative link between two key modes of research
dissemination gives students the opportunity to experience, in a supportive yet real-world setting, the range of
techniques used to communicate their research with an audience.
WRITING FOR REINVENTION As a participant at ICUR, you have worked hard to develop a presentation of your research to this international
audience. The next step is to write a paper for publication! We encourage all the participants in ICUR to further
disseminate their research by writing a journal paper and submitting it to the Reinvention editorial board for review.
We will publish a special issue featuring the work of ICUR presenters in early 2015.

ICUR 2014 FOUNDED BY THE MONASH-WARWICK ALLIANCE ICUR 2014 FOUNDED BY THE MONASH-WARWICK ALLIANCE
MONASH-WARWICK ALLIANCEThe Monash Warwick Alliance offers a new model for research-led institutions to meet the global challenges of the
21st century. By accelerating the exchange of people, ideas and information and exploiting the opportunities offered
by the geography of the two institutions in Europe, Asia-Pacific and Africa, we intend to create a new approach to
global higher education.
A key aim of the Alliance is to help meet the increasing student, industry and government demand for universities to
produce graduates with a global education, and to undertake research that addresses world-relevant and strategically
important problems.
In time, as our vision for globally connected universities is refined and developed, new models of delivery of
education and educational services will emerge, challenging traditional concepts of what it means to be a university
and enabling new members to become part of the Alliance.
ICUR PARTNER INSTITUTIONSICUR began in 2013 as a collaboration between Monash and Warwick universities under the auspices of the Monash-
Warwick Alliance and has since grown to include five new partners: Baruch College CUNY, Nanyang Technological
University, Singapore Management University, the University of Washington, and the University of Western Australia.
We are excited to welcome these new collaborating institutions and their students to ICUR 2014.
BARUCH COLLEGE, CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK Baruch College, part of the City University of New York, is a diverse urban campus in Manhattan with over 14,000
undergraduates speaking 120 languages. Many students are the first in their families to attend college and are
immigrants or children of immigrants. We celebrate this wonderful diversity, which connects Baruch to the world
through its students. While many students attend Baruch to pursue business degrees in the Zicklin School of
Business, the college also has a strong Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, offering liberal arts majors and minors,
and a School of Public Affairs. Baruch is committed to enhancing research opportunities for undergraduates and
embraces the mission of deepening student engagement with the globe. Therefore, we are very excited about
participating in this international conference so that our students can interact with contemporaries around the globe
and gain pride in presenting their original work.
Katherine Pence, Chair and Associate Professor of History and Director of Women’s and Gender Studies.
MONASH UNIVERSITY Welcome to ICUR 2014! We are very excited to be running this transformative event again this year with new
partners and new ideas. Monash University is proud to be a leader of this exciting new international initiative which is
demonstrative of our commitment to delivering a global education to our students.
Monash is a university driven by innovation; the ability to identify urgent areas of intervention, coupled with a burning
desire to make a difference, is woven into the intellectual fabric of our institution and enfolds our teaching, learning,
and research. ICUR is an important part of the pioneering learning and teaching work done at Monash, both for the
experience we offer students and for the further development of new pedagogical methodologies to further enhance
the student experience.
Our students presenting today are the best and brightest of their cohort, and we are tremendously excited to hear
their presentations after many months of preparation. We are grateful too to their supervisors who have mentored
them through the research process and guided them toward, what will be for many, their first international academic
experience.
Jessica O’Leary. Assistant Lecturer, School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies and the Office of the
Vice President, Monash-Warwick Alliance. Ernest Koh, Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in History, School of
Philosophical, Historical and International Studies and Academic Advisor, Monash-Warwick Alliance.
NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
It is our honour to be involved in this special undergraduate research conference programme which helps induct
students into the world of sharing research through virtual global conference, an endeavor made all the more
meaningful because it brings together the research minded undergraduates of some of the world’s finest universities.
Participation in this prestigious International Conference of Undergraduate Research (ICUR) is a highly valuable
experience to our NTU undergraduates. At NTU, research – as a way of life for undergraduate students – begins
as early as the second year through our URECA (Undergraduate Research Experience on CAmpus) programme and
enables them to touch and feel research in a 11-month research programme. These students are now given the first
hand experience in organizing and presenting at a global conference. We commend ICUR for virtually bringing our
young research talents across the globe. By faithfully upholding its fundamental principle of providing students with a
world class virtual conference environment and excellent mentorship, ICUR has established itself as an integral part of
NTU’s research-intensive culture.
Dr. A I Sivakumar is an Associate Professor in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) and is also
Director of the Undergraduate Research Programme-URECA@NTU and Director of the Joint MSc Project Management
programme at NTU.

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON
Founded in 1861, the University of Washington (UW) is one of the oldest public universities on the West Coast of the
United States. The UW is comprised of three campuses as well as a world-class academic medical center. UW faculty
compete successfully for sponsored grants and contracts that fund an extraordinary research enterprise, receiving more
than $1 billion annually from federal and non-federal funding sources. Undergraduates at the UW are also engaged
in research, scholarship, and creative activity in partnership with faculty in all academic disciplines and professional
schools. The UW’s Undergraduate Research Program assists students to identify opportunities to work with faculty
on authentic problems and topics that extend their learning beyond the traditional classroom and prepare them for
further education and employment in a global society. Participation in this International Virtual Student Research
Conference resonates with the UW’s mission of educating productive, global citizens.
Janice DeCosmo, Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Research and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Academic
Affairs and Jennifer Harris, Director, Undergraduate Research Program, University of Washington.
UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
ICUR is a wonderful opportunity not only for our UWA students but all participating students, to connect with one
another, engaging in what and how other undergraduate students are researching in various corners of the globe.
Sharing this experience and discussing undergraduate research across many disciplines gives both presenters and their
audience a unique insight into current international research topics, and the importance placed on research at the
various institutions.
Presenters have the opportunity to improve their communications skills (both written and oral) as well as develop
confidence while preparing for and delivering their presentation. Additionally, they gain a stronger sense of belonging
to the international research community and potentially develop future research partnerships through ICUR.
Being part of this unique global experience gives our UWA volunteers a sense of what is involved in undergraduate
research and encourages them to consider taking part in our undergraduate research program at UWA and perhaps
considering an overseas venture in the future.
Undergraduate research is an expanding area within most universities. Being involved in the ICUR conference sees our
university participating in cutting edge research delivery.
Professor Sally Sandover, Academic Director and Ms Andrea Fraser, Project Officer of the Educational Strategies Office,
University of Western Australia.
SINGAPORE MANAGEMENT UNIVERSITY
Critical engagement, passion, curiosity, voice. These are the required features of today’s leaders. As our
undergraduate students try to find themselves, they begin the process of critically examining the issues about which
they are curious and passionate. They develop informed opinions and conclusions about these issues. They seek
opportunities to exercise their voice by contributing to public debate.
All of these are central to the exercise that is ICUR. The conference is a platform for presenting research – critical
engagement – on issues that students believe are important to themselves and to our age. It is an international
cutting edge forum – an innovative use of advanced technology to bring together student researchers from around
the world. It is led by and organized for undergraduate students.
Aspired to be a “Different U”, Singapore Management University is dedicated to undergraduate education and
undergraduate research. After all, SMU’s mission – with its interactive pedagogy, small seminar-style classes and use
of learning-enhancing technology – is directly in-line with the goals of ICUR. We are delighted to take part in this
initiative and we look forward to continuing this into the future.
John Donaldson is Associate Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Singapore Management University. As an
Associate Professor of Political Science, he researches political and social changes in rural China.
Chang-Yau Hoon is Assistant Professor of Asian Studies and Founding Member of the Diversity and Inclusion
Committee at Singapore Management University.
UNIVERSITY OF WARWICK
The University of Warwick is committed to ensuring that all students have the opportunity to undertake research and
have a voice within the academic community as early as possible within their studies. Our strategy is structured to
ensure that Warwick provides a distinctive learning experience, characterised by research-led learning and teaching.
The University encourages active rather than passive learning, innovation and a constant dialogue between students
and teachers. We also support an internationalised student experience through links with our international partner
institutions.
IATL, where the Warwick ICUR organising team is based, was formed to take forward these key aspects of the
University’s Teaching and Learning Strategy, particularly a commitment to innovation, interdisciplinarity, inclusiveness
and internationalism and to promoting academic literacy skills and student leadership. It was through these values
that Reinvention: an International Journal of Undergraduate Research was formed in 2007 and they continued to
guide us, alongside our colleagues and friends at Monash, when we devised and developed ICUR, which has the
explicit aim of giving students a realistic, yet supported experience of presenting research at an academic conference.
We are very excited to see the expansion of the conference this year and we hope to see that growth continue as we
work with yet more international partners in the future, giving all students involved a truly exciting, innovative and
international experience.
