Location:

09-10 September. 2016

1.0 Theme Introduction The overall objective of this conference is to provide a platform to stimulate discussion and explore collectively on various issues affecting management of business and other organizations in emerging markets, especially in view of business environment of the 21st century. The businesses and organizations in emerging markets have faced tremendous changes due to fast changing environmental factors on the one hand and pressing new global development priorities on the other. This has brought significant implications on the way the organizations are managed. The fast technological changes, transformation of institutions through continuous policy reforms and rapidly changing industry boundaries, have necessitated for both academics and practitioners alike, the need to better understand the emerging business dynamics and develop innovative managerial solutions.

Enterprises and businesses across the world are changing fast in terms of setting priorities and their management approach. Conventional boundaries of competition are disappearing; and the new era of collaborative problem solving is driving the organizations with wider aim of contributing to global sustainable development priorities. Goals. Recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are all set to change the paradigm of managing businesses and other organizations. Recent report by MIT Sloan Review and United Nations Global Compact highlights the changing business management approach worldwide. This is an opportunity for organization, especially in emerging markets, as they have option to design their growth in a more dynamic and cross cutting way by aligning it to sustainable development agenda.

The business environment continues to be dynamic. As a result, researchers and practitioners both need to adapt to the ever-changing situation. Several macro-level factors continue to play influential roles in changing organizational management culture and business practices.

In view of this, Mzumbe University School of Business and Dar Es Salaam Campus College has decided to jointly organize this conference to invite scholars from different disciplines that link to management of businesses and organizations to address the issue. Keeping with the trends of a changing world, the theme of this conference focuses on creating new management solutions for businesses and other organizations, especially in view of future trends.

2.0 Location of the International Conference

The conference will be in Zanzibar (Zanzibar Beach Resort). Zanzibar beach resort is situated on the south-west coast of Zanzibar, contiguous to the beautiful Indian Ocean and flawless white sandy beach; only ten minutes from the historic exotic Swahili Stone Town and five minutes from the International Airport. The Resort is set in a magical hand-picked stunning location with gorgeous landscaped gardens. It is a beautiful spot to watch some of the most magnificent sunsets.

3.0 Call for papers

We invite authors to submit empirical, conceptual papers, case-studies and structured abstracts in areas related to the conference theme. We have four special tracks for this conference with several publication opportunities. However, we also understand that the nature of business and management is highly interdisciplinary and, therefore, papers on related areas are also welcome. The following are the track details and indicative, but not limited to areas for submission of manuscripts. Track 1: Managing businesses and organizations in emerging markets

(Track Chair: Prof. Ronald E. Berenbeim, New York University Stern School of Business, Email: [email protected] )

Managing the business and non-business organizations under the changing environmental conditions of emerging markets is one of the major challenges for practitioners. While most of the conventional management wisdom is based on the theories and concepts developed in entirely different context of developed economies, managers find it challenging to adapt it to emerging markets context. Whether it is issue related to business functions of marketing, finance, human resources and information systems or the issues at different levels of management, the problem appears to be pervasive. Further, the changing industrial and sectoral boundaries call for new management approaches for effective management of the organizations. Submissions under this track would be touching one or more of the following issues:

• What are the challenges in managing functional issues (human resource, marketing, finance, procurement, operations and supply chain) in emerging markets businesses?

• How functional management can be improved further? • What are the key issues in managing supply chains in international markets? • How the role of supply chain intermediaries differs under the different types of

multinational or domestic companies in emerging markets? • What are best practices in managing businesses and organizations in emerging

markets? • How business environment changes have impacted management of organizations

in emerging markets? • How businesses can respond to sustainable development priorities in the

context? • How services can contribute to emerging markets’ sustainable development? • What type of changes required in transforming emerging market’s businesses? • What should be role of educational institutions in improving management

practices in emerging markets? • What is the role of higher education institutions in managing business and

organizations in emerging markets

Track 2: Innovation and technology management for sustainable development

(Track Chair: Prof. Kuldeep Kumar, Professor Emeritus, Florida International University, Florda, Email: [email protected]

Effective management of innovation is considered essential for economic development in any context. We define innovation as any novel idea or practice in the given organizational context. Coupled with fast technological changes, innovation offers a great potential for entrepreneurship, including social entrepreneurship, development in emerging markets. Global commitment to climate change emphasizes the use of environmentally sustainable technologies. This, on the one hand, presents a new challenge for businesses in emerging markets but also offers great innovation opportunities on the other. The submissions under this track would touch one or more of the following questions?

• Are businesses in emerging markets (e.g. those of Africa) prepared to adapt to new technologies? How?

• What is the current state of technology management in African organizations? • How emerging businesses can be more environmental friendly by adopting ne

technologies? • How innovation can contribute to entrepreneurship development in Africa? • Do we have good models of innovation driven entrepreneurship in Africa? • How social entrepreneurship development can be linked to innovation and

technology? • Are we effectively managing knowledge? How? • What is the role of higher education institutions in the innovation and technology

management

Track 3: Ethics, governance and humanism for responsible management

(Track Chair: Prof. Wolfgang C. Amann, HEC Paris School of Management, Doha, Email: [email protected]   ,   Co-‐Chair:   Prof.   Shiv   K.   Tripathi,   Mzumbe   University   Dar   Es   Salaam   Campus  College,  Email:  [email protected]  )

Governance issues have been matter of concern in developing and emerging economies. While the private sector governance contributes to responsible business behavior, the public sector governance is important for optimal use of country’s resources in transparent manner. In recent past, many private sector organizations have reflect commitment to responsible governance that focuses on labor issues, human rights, environmental sustainability and anti-corruption principles through participation in initiatives like United Nations Global Compact. Ethics remain at the core of responsible governance irrespective of sector and type of organization. In addition to practice, the education system, particularly management and business education, also needs realignment to meet the pressing need for ethical leaders and managers who would ensure responsible governance and management of the organizations. The submissions under this track would explore one or more of the following questions:

• How new generation of ethical leaders and managers can be developed in

emerging markets? • What are the challenges in developing responsible governance in emerging

markets’ organizations? • What are current practices of supply chain transparency and ethics compliance in

emerging markets? • How governance in emerging markets’ organizations can be made more

responsible? • How ethics training can contribute to develop responsible leadership in African

organizations? • How international developments like UK Bribery Act, US Foreign Corrupt

Practices Act, OECD-Convention against corruption and United Nations Global Compact Anti-Corruption Principle have caused changes in the governance paradigm of companies across borders?

• What are the key issues in developing sound ethics compliance system for businesses in emerging economies?

• How management, Ethics (or both) should address compliance systems which includes, but is not limited to, training, whistleblowing, protection of accused parties, information custody, and design, implementation, effective management for improvement in both parent companies and third parties, and law?

• How gender balance can be achieved in businesses through responsible management?

• How management education in Africa can be made more responsible in terms of development priorities?

Track 4: Developing Sustainable Business in Emerging Markets of Africa: Practical Issues and Way Forward (Track chair: Dr. Kato Mshumbusi, Associate Dean, School of Business-Mzumbe University, email: [email protected]) The economic growth in African emerging markets has opened new opportunities for potential business development across sectors and value-chains. This opportunity can contribute significantly in transforming the life of people through employment and other potential income generating options. However, there are a number of factors that need to be strategically aligned to realize the desired business growth locally in different country contexts. The infrastructure development, policy framework, Government support and 'doing business environment' are some of the priority issues that need stakeholders attention. On the other hand, the multinational companies operating in Africa also need to develop business model that accelerates inclusive growth in the continent. This track is mainly designed to brainstorm on ground realities that influences the business development process in emerging markets of Africa. We invite empirical/conceptual paper, case-studies or expert-reflections that addresses one or more of the following:

• What are the opportunities for developing businesses in emerging African markets?

• How multinational companies can help in promoting local businesses? • What are some successful business development experiences? • What are challenges in developing a successful business in African markets? How

these challenges can be overcome

• What should be role of higher education institutions and different stakeholders in promoting businesses in African markets?
