Dear Sir, Dear Madam,

The first decade of XXI century is closing, and today our society rediscovers itself every minute. The role of Youth in

this re-invention is significant – with tangible impact on values and relationships, theories and practices.

Ten years ago, in Lisbon, the European Union took on the challenge to grow and adapt knowledge, to be innovative

and creative about the development of skills, aptitudes and abilities. It was then when the concepts of ‘entrepreneu-

rship’ and ‘practical learning’ obtained new form, new shape, new meaning. The new element was the involvement

of youth: this sector of pro-active, enthusiastic and fearless individuals, ready to take Europe to the next step. The

next step being, of course, the knowledge-based market.

For the past forty years, the young entrepreneurs of Europe have been pursuing the recognition of their innovative

method of knowledge acquisition: the concept of ‘learning by doing’. The persistence of the young people in this

direction led to the development of Junior Enterprises – non-profit small businesses, run solely by students alongside

their studies. Enchanted by the results of the Enterprises, universities and companies offer their support to the stu-

dents (training, sponsorship, commercial projects). The impact of the Junior Enterprise Concept grows year by year,

as the revenues of the largest business structures reach the million-euro bar.

In 1992, the Junior Entrepreneurs make another daring step by joining forces and establishing an international um-

brella for their activities. Today, JADE – the European Confederation of Junior Enterprises – proudly unites 15 Europe-

an countries, being at the same time linked with similar networks in Brazil, Asia, South Africa and the United States.

Being a representative organisation, headquartered in Brussels, JADE works in close cooperation with the European

Institutions, Satellite organisations and the Private Sector in order to spread the concept of ‘learning by doing’ and

promote the activities of the youth.

However, it was not until recently that the creativity and innovation of the new approach towards learning showed its

true face: this time, by touching the very heart of our society, the higher education. Again, it was the young people

who had the opportunity to work alongside decision-makers and develop what Europe calls today the Oslo Agen-

da for Entrepreneurship Education, which set the focus of higher education on the concept of ‘learning by doing’.

Recognised as ‘best practice’ by the EU, the Junior Enterprises have the key function of bridging the gap between

academia and real business world, thus enforcing practicality and relevancy of higher education.

Being very visible on European level, today JADE engages numerous partners and supporters, providing them with

access to the elitest students of Europe, their wide range of talent and skills, as well as tools for development of

creative solutions.

It is therefore with pleasure, that I invite you to take a short journey through JADE’s values and benefits, people and

stories, facts and numbers. We are constantly focused on adding value to our stakeholders, and we believe that you

are no exception.

We wish you pleasant learning by doing.

Yours Faithfully,

Lorenzo Uberti, JADE President 2011

“I would like to stress the role played by organisations like JADE, and the importance of Junior En-

terprises as learning tools and bridges between university and the business world, particularly in a

European context”.

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EUROPEAN COMISSION

“JADE - the European Confederation of Junior Enterprises is a prime example when it comes to

“learning by doing”. By fostering the entrepreneurial mindsets among students, Junior Enterprises

help to provide a conducive and competitive learning environment, creating leaders for the future

of Europe.”

Philippe de Buck, Secretary General of BUSINESSEUROPE

“We need to shape a more entrepreneurial Europe for the future of the next generations. JADE

is doing an excellent job in this respect by offering students the chance to gain experience as

entrepreneurs. This is why EUROCHAMBERS supports and promotes this initiative.”

Arnaldo Abruzzini, Secretary General of EUROCHAMBERS

“JADE has clearly recognised the important connection between education and business which

I fully support. The initiative created by JADE can only help students to learn entrepreneurial skills

and help prepare those who will eventually choose a career in business. I applaud the efforts of

JADE !”

Stelios Haji-Ioannou, Founder of EasyGroup

“Entrepreneurship is widely recognized in Europe as a key force to drive the innovation process

and to aid economies to survive the tsunami of global competition. JADE, has played an active

role in this emerging ecosystem throughout these last years.

Kenneth P Morse, Director of MIT Entrepreneurship Centre

““For JADE “learning by doing” matters more than words, it provides practical assistance and

the exchange of experiences. JADE is part of the true European asset - a spirit of Partnership

and cooperation.

Günter Verheugen, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for En-

terprise and Industry (2004-2010)
