The 2013 Advancements in Fiber-Polymer Composites: Wood Fiber,

Natural Fibers, and Nanocellulose conference seeks to bring together

industry, government, and academia to discuss the latest developments in

fiber-polymer composites and represents an evolution of the International

Wood and Biofiber Plastic Composites conference series initiated by FPL

and the University of Toronto, and hosted biennially by FPL and the For-

est Products Society. This conference is the premiere conference in North

America covering topics relating to wood-plastic composites, an important

and growing segment of the forest products industry.

In addition, the conference covers the new field of nanocellulose compos-

ites. This advanced field will pave the way for new and enhanced forest

products, including expansion into non-traditional markets. We invite you

to come to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA from May 6-7, 2013 to share and

learn about the state-of-the-art trends and perspectives on what the future

holds in this dynamic field of fiber-polymer composites.

Welcome to the Forest Products Society’s 67th and the Society of Wood Science and Technology’s 56th International Convention in Austin, Texas! It is my goal as the chair of the organizing committee to provide you with a forum where you can network and freely exchange information with your peers, guests, and speakers.

The Convention is an astounding opportunity to become exposed to the wide range of timely forest products issues facing the industry worldwide. The theme for FPS’s program is Forest Products in a Global Sustainable Economy, with particular emphasis on wood technology, forest products and the environment, and human dimensions and policy. The program led by SWST will focus on Technology Advancement and Marketing Practices in Biomass, specifically in natural fiber-based products and biofuels. We have encouraged submissions of presentations on any topic within the broad realm of Forest Products in Global Sustainable Economy. The result—you’ll experience an astounding selection of presentations delivered by the world’s most prominent scholars, experts and professionals.

We are honored to have Russ Taylor of International WOOD MARKETS Group Inc. as our keynote speaker. Other distin-guished speakers and panelists include Ned Stowe, Ian Hanna, Joanne Littlefair, Jason Metnick, Sarah Crow and Debo-rah Walden-Hersh, and officials from departments and agencies that have interest in forest products. While you are at the Convention, I encourage you to not only listen to their speeches but also interact directly with our distinguished speakers to exchange views on topics about forest products.

For the first time, the ever-popular Annual Excellence Awards will be co-hosted by FPS and SWST. Please make plans to join us on Sunday to congratulate all award recipients and hear about some remarkable achievements in forest products! Also a first, the Poster Session is co-hosted by FPS and SWST and will occur for nearly the full duration of the Conven-tion. Posters will be set up and available for perusal from Sunday through Tuesday afternoon. The Poster Session will begin with a Student Poster Competition on Sunday afternoon, followed by a Welcome Reception for all attendees in the beautiful outdoor courtyard located at the heart of the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center. The Wood Science Bowl has been moved to Monday evening to allow for more students to participate. Come join the fun of this quiz-style, knowledge-based game and root for your favorite team! The inaugural Student Speed Networking Luncheon was such a hit in 2012 that we were asked convene it again and make it longer and more free flowing. Scheduled for Tuesday, the lunch will be box-style to make table changes more smooth and efficient. Be smart—take advantage of this great opportunity! Career professionals: bring your expertise, knowledge, and advice!

And finally, the Closing Celebration will recreate an old-time hoedown with live country music by the Jerry Sires Band, great food including BBQ (of course), and dancing.

This is going to be an outstanding Convention as we look forward to a productive and rewarding experience together in Austin—the Live Music Capital of the World!

how the Need for Transparency and Assurance Will Affect your IndustryIan hanna, director of Business development, Forest Stewardship Council

Ian Hanna’s responsibilities focus on ensuring strong growth and diversification of the FSC market in the u.S. His work includes developing new relationships with corporations, trade associations and NGOs, as well as ensuring that FSC is positioned for emerging markets. One element of this work is the management of FSC’s u.S. regional market development pro-grams, which are currently active in the Northwest, the Southeast, and the Lake States.

Ian has 16 years’ experience in the FSC system, including forest management, family for-est certification, community scale manufacturing, lumber and flooring sales, and market development. He is trained as a forest ecologist and has worked for The Nature Conservancy, the Certified Forest Products Council, and the Northwest Natural Resource Group, and as a

private consultant. He also founded Windfall Lumber, one of the first chain-of-custody certified businesses in Washing-ton State.

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative: The Power of ChoiceJason Metnick, Vice President, Customer AffairsSustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI Inc.)

Jason Metnick is Vice President, Customer Affairs, for the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI Inc.) program, a third-party forest certification system in North America. The SFI Standard, one of the largest sustainable forestry certification programs in the world, is based on principles and measures that promote sustainability, including measures to protect for water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk, and forests of exceptional conservation value.

Jason works directly with companies in the wood, paper and packaging supply chain, including forest landowners, manufacturers, merchants, wholesalers, converters, print-ers and end-users, to promote the SFI program and provide market access to SFI-certified

organizations. Jason also oversees the SFI Office of Label use and Licensing. The Office of Label use and Licensing encompasses more than 280 companies, universities, conservation groups and state agencies that represent over 200 million acres (more than 81 million hectares) of forestland across North America. The Office of Label use and Licensing administers the rules and procedures for SFI on-product label usage.

Jason holds a bachelor of science degree in Forestry from Northern Arizona university and is a member of the Society of American Foresters. He also sits on a number of committees related to certification, labeling and claims, including the Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification’s chain-of-custody committee. He is a member of The Sustain-ability Consortium’s Forestry Sector and chairs the ASTM task group on chain-of-custody.

American Tree Farm System (ATFS) Certification: Leveraging a Range of Values to Engage Family Woodland ownersSarah Crow, Certification Manager, American Tree Farm System, American Forest Foundation

As the Certification Manager with the ATFS, Sarah Crow works with tree farmers, state com-mittees, and inspecting foresters across the ATFS network to implement ATFS Certification on the ground. A former Fulbright Research Fellow, Sarah holds a bachelor of science degree in Forestry from the university of Montana and an MS in Natural Resources from the univer-sity of Vermont.

What does Washington have to Say About Federal Bio-Sector Regulations and Policy?Ned Stowe, Policy Associate, Sustainable Biomass and Energy Program, Environmental and Energy Study Institute

Ned Stowe joined the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) in 2008 to lead the program on sustainable biomass and energy. For more than a decade, EESI has worked to advance understanding of the many and varied roles that sustainable bioenergy can play in addressing the nation’s climate, energy, economic and environmental challenges. Ned’s portfolio includes all policies relating to biomass, bioenergy and bio-based production and products, with an emphasis on promoting sustainability.

Previously, Ned served 13 years as Senior Lobbyist with the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), a Quaker lobby in the public interest, where he started a climate and energy program. This initiative focused in part on the national and international security di-

mensions of continuing u.S. oil dependence and advocated for increasing use of renewable biofuels and other means to address this challenge.

Ned tracks trends in related science, technology and policy; works with policymakers and stakeholders to develop sustainable biomass policies; organizes briefings for congressional staff and the public; and reports on related federal policy developments in an electronic newsletter, Sustainable Bioenergy, Farms, and Forests (SBFF). SBFF is posted at www.eesi.org and distributed free of charge to a national network of more than 2,500 federal and state policymakers and other interested observers.

Environmental Regulations Impacting the Forest Products Industrydeborah Walden-hersh, P.E., Managing Consultant, Trinity Consultants, Inc.

Deborah Walden-Hersh serves as a Managing Consultant in the Austin office of Trinity Consultants, Inc., where she assists clients with state and federal air quality permitting, quan-tifying emissions, conducting regulatory applicability analyses, performing air dispersion modeling and developing Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP). Deborah has been an instructor for five of Trinity’s courses and webinars. She has also instructed custom courses for corporations.

Deborah has provided services to numerous industries, including pulp and paper pro-duction, OSB manufacturing, lumber mills, wood pellet manufacturing facilities, electric generation, Portland cement manufacturing, glass manufacturing, surface coating, chemical

manufacturing, oil and gas production, asphalt roofing manufacturing, cable manufacturing and others.

u.S. Export Trends and Trade Policy developmentsJoanne Littlefair, International Trade Specialist, united States department of Commerce

Joanne Littlefair is an international trade specialist in the u.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. She specializes in international competitiveness issues affecting u.S. building materials and building product manufacturers, with a focus on the global Green Building sector. Joanne’s portfolio encompasses both trade policy and trade promotion initiatives.

Prior to joining the International Trade Administration, she spent 18 years in the private sector conducting overseas market entry and expansion strategy development for u.S. companies. Joanne received a bachelor of arts degree from Cornell university and a master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia university’s School of International and Public Affairs.

Fred W. Gottschalk Memorial AwardThe prestigious award, named for the first President of the Society, recognizes and honors exceptional service to the Forest Products Society by an individual member.

dr. Robert Ross, Project Leader, uSDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, WI uSA

Bob Ross has served as a Project Leader for several research work units at the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), including its physical and mechanical properties testing unit, since 1988. Currently his research focuses on the development and use of nondestructive evaluation technologies for various wood products and structures, from standing trees to historic build-ings and ships. He has written or co-authored more than 200 technical reports/articles about nondestructive evaluation and jointly holds two dozen u.S. and foreign patents. He is senior author or co-author of four widely referenced books published by the Forest Products Soci-ety: “Nondestructive Evaluation of Wood”; “undervalued Hardwoods for Engineered Materials and Components”; “Wood and Timber Condition Assessment Manual”; and “Wood utilization Options for urban Trees Infested by Invasive Species.” He served as Team Leader and Editor of

the Centennial Edition of “Wood Handbook—Wood as an Engineering Material,” FPL’s flagship publication.

Bob’s research has resulted in the development of innovative nondestructive evaluation methods that are used in laboratory, field and industrial environments worldwide. His efforts have resulted in domestic and foreign patents that have been or are being commercially developed domestically and off-shore. He has been consulted on a variety of interesting technical projects, including condition assessment of members in the uSS Constitution (Old Ironsides) and the design of portable sports floors for one of the leading manufacturers of sports flooring systems in the united States. He has provided input on methods of inspection for post-Katrina wood structures and provided information on moisture-related performance issues for the laminated propellers of reconnaissance and surveillance drones used by American forces in Iraq.

Bob holds BS (Wood and Fiber utilization) and MS (Engineering Mechanics) degrees from Michigan Technological university and a PhD in Engineering Science from Washington State university. Bob’s efforts have been formally recog-nized by several organizations. Papers summarizing his research results have been recognized by FPS and the Society of Experimental Mechanics. He has received the Federal Laboratory Consortium’s Award for Excellence in Technol-ogy Transfer and the uSDA Forest Service Chief’s Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer. He is a member of the School of Forestry and Environmental Sciences’ (Michigan Technological university) Honor Academy and holds adjunct faculty appointments at the university of Minnesota Duluth, Michigan Technological university, Beijing Forestry uni-versity, and Northeast Forestry university (Harbin, China). He currently serves as Co-Chair of the International Nonde-structive Testing and Evaluation of Wood Symposium Series.

Bob has been a member of the Forest Products Society since 1978. He was presented the “Wood Award” by FPS in 1985 and has served on the West Central Region of the FPS Board for the past three years.

In addition to his technical contributions, Bob has made a significant effort to integrate individuals who have intellec-tual disabilities into the workplace. His efforts have been formally recognized by The Arc-Dane County, Madison Area Rehabilitation Center, and Greater Madison Federal Agency Association. Currently he is a volunteer for The Arc-Dane County, Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center in Madison and St. Coletta of Wisconsin.

First Place Paper: Jingquan han, Louisiana Forest Products Development Center, “Self-Assembling Behavior of Cel-lulose Nanoparticles During Freeze Drying: Effect of Suspension Concentration, Particle Size, and Crystal Structure”

Jingquan Han is currently a PhD candidate at Louisiana State university. He grew up in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China. After receiving his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Wood Science and Technology at Northeast Forestry university, he came to the united States to pursue his PhD at Mississippi State university and work with Dr. Sheldon Shi. In 2010, he joined the PhD program in forest products at Louisiana State, advised by Dr. Qinglin Wu. His research project deals with cellulose-based nanomaterials. The first part of the research is on characterization of cellulose II nanoparticles regenerated from ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, which was published in Carbohydrate Polymers in 2013. The second part of the research is focused on the self-assembling behavior of cellulose nanoparticles during the freeze drying process: effect of crystal structure, particle size and

suspension concentration. His further goal is to study the effect of particle size, mass ratio and cellulose structure on the rheological, mechanical and thermodynamic properties of high viscoelastic hydrogels prepared by lyotropic cel-lulose particles well-dispersed in the polyvinyl alcohol-borax polymer system.

Second Place Paper: Qi Li, Mississippi State university, “Renewable Energy from Lignocellulosic Biomass: Characteris-tics of Fast Pyrolysis Oils as Influenced by Feedstock Chemical Composition”

Qi Li has a bachelor’s degree from Beijing Forestry university in China and a master’s degree from Mississippi State university in Forest Products. She received her PhD from Mississippi State in December 2012 and is currently working as a postdoctoral associate in the Depart-ment of Forest Products at Mississippi State. Her research area is the production of bioenergy and biochemicals from pyrolysis of forestry and agricultural biomass. While she was a PhD student, Qi won several research awards, including the 2012 MSu Graduate Symposium Out-standing Research Award and the Second Place Winner in the Student Poster competition in

the 2010 MSu Biofuels Conference. Qi has authored or co-authored seven peer-reviewed journal articles.

L.J. Markwardt Wood Engineering AwardThe L.J. Markwardt Award recognizes the author(s) of a technical paper published in the Forest Products Journal or

Wood and Fiber Science during the previous two years that has the most outstanding merit in the field of wood as an

engineering material. This award encourages research and promotes knowledge of wood in the engineering field to

enhance the efficient utilization of wood.

B. Kristoffer Segerholm, PhD Student, Division of Building Materials, KTH Royal Institute of

Kristoffer Segerholm is a Researcher at SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, Wood

Technology, and at KTH Royal Institute, Division of Building Materials. He has a PhD in Civil

and Architectural Engineering and an MSc in Mechanical Engineering, both from KTH.

Kristoffer’s research focus is micromorphology, moisture properties and durability of wood-

polymer composite materials. He has co-authored numerous journal publications and

international conference presentations.

Stefan Vellekoop, Student, SP, Technical Research Institute of Sweden, Stockholm, Sweden

Stefan Vellekoop is a graduate student in Wood Engineering at SP Technical Research

Institute of Sweden, as well as a Product Engineer at IKEA specializing in the development

of workchairs. Stefan is a skilled cabinet maker and furniture test engineer and has fulfilled

several international internships.

Technology, and Centre Manager, EcoBuild Institute Excellence Center, SP, Technical Research

Institute of Sweden, Stockholm, Sweden

Magnus Wålinder is a Professor in KTH Royal Institute of Technology’s Department of Civil

and Architectural Engineering, Division of Building Materials. He has a PhD in Wood Technol-

ogy and Processing from KTH and an MSc in Mechanical Engineering, also from KTH. He has

been Centre Manager of the EcoBuild Institute Excellence Centre. Magnus’ research interests

include building materials applications, adhesion science and technology, wetting phenom-

ena and wood plastic composites. He is involved in several international collaborations in his

fields of research.

Wood Engineering Achievement Award—Lifetime Achievement The Wood Engineering Achievement Award recognizes achievements and innovations in the discipline of wood engi-neering, including structures, structural elements, building codes, consensus standards, design procedures and educa-tion. The award focus alternates each year among Lifetime Achievement, young Engineer and Engineering Innovation. This year’s award is sponsored by the American Wood Council.

Erol Karacabeyli, Manager of Building Systems Department, FPInnovations

Erol is the Manager of the Building Systems Department at FPInnovations (formerly Forintek). The program has more than 30 staff comprising scientists, engineers, research associates and technologists. Erol is a well-known, influential member in the wood building systems research field nationally and internationally, and he serves on numerous codes and stan-dards committees. Erol is the Chair of ISO Technical Committee on Timber Structures, and an Adjunct Professor at the Civil Engineering Department of the university of British Columbia. Erol has made significant contributions in the wood building systems field. He has published

his findings in more than 100 publications and received six awards.

Student Scholarship ProgramThe merit-based Forest Products Society’s Student Scholarship Program of The Wood Preservation Fund provides financial assistance to student and post-doctoral members of the Society, enabling them to participate in the Society’s International Convention. This Scholarship Program helps students connect with the global forest products industry. The Wood Preservation Fund recognizes and honors a special gift from the American Wood Protection Bureau to the Forest Products Society. This gift creates a lasting legacy to promote international awareness of developments in research in wood and wood-based product protection.

MIdWEST SECTIoN & uPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEy SECTIoN

The Midwest Section and upper Mississippi Valley Section together collaborated on the inaugural North American Wood Window and Door Symposium in Roseville, MN, April 18-19, 2013. The conference attracted nearly 100 at-tendees representing a broad cross-section of the industry. Representatives from the private, academic, and federal government sectors presented on topics ranging from the design and performance of wood windows and doors to environmental issues and life cycle analysis. As a special outing for registered guests, a tour of nearby SageGlass was arranged, where attendees toured a state-of-the-art facility that manufactures electrochromic glass used in dimmable windows. The event received excellent reviews from participants.

MIdWEST SECTIoN STudENT AWARdS

This year, the Midwest Section presented the two student awards. Both student recipients are enrolled in the Cabinet-making and Millwork Program at Madison Area Technical College.

• The Membership Award went to Clay “Major” Glennon. Major has excelled in the Cabinetmaking and Millwork Program at MATC and is currently building a set of matching Morris chairs. Major was awarded a 1-year member-ship to the Forest Products Society.

• The Book Award was given to Antonio Avila-Rivas. Antonio came to Madison from Spain, where he had experi-ence in his family business as a woodworker. Over the past year, he has worked very hard to improve his English and become comfortable with more advanced machining processes. Antonio was presented with a hardback copy of Bruce Hoadley’s classic “understanding Wood.”

Much of the work of the Society takes place at the local level through Sections. Members of FPS Sections volunteer their time to organize educational opportunities and projects that support professionals and students in the wood products industry in their region. There are 12 Sections across the u.S. and Canada. The Society has begun work to form Sections outside of North America.

Here we recognize outstanding action of some of our Sections in the past year.

GREAT LAKES SECTIoN

Over the past year, the Great Lakes Section has begun to develop a system to facilitate job searching for professional woodworkers. The Section met with WoodLINKS and Woodwork Career Alliance, two important partners in the indus-try, to explore what information could be provided to develop a successful job search system. The Great Lakes Section is working with both organizations to frame out the job search tool that will bring benefit to such professionals, par-ticularly students who are preparing to enter the industry.

The Great Lakes Section is also considering spearheading a project to revive a database of wood-using companies in Michigan that has been dropped by the DNR due to budget cuts. The database provides critical information for the wood industry in the state.

SouThEAST SECTIoN

The Southeast Section held its annual meeting in August 2012 in conjunction with the In-ternational Woodworking Fair, the third-largest wood products and equipment show in the world. The Section meeting drew nearly 30 people.

In the past year, the Section made an effort to increase FPS student membership at Auburn university. A dinner meeting was held with students and attended by officers from the Southeast Section. The Section has also sponsored the development of Student Chapters at Kasetsart university in Thailand and universiti Putra Malaysia.

In October 2012, the Southeast Section sponsored a workshop in conjunction with the Timber Processing and Energy Expo that was held in Portland, Oregon. During the Expo, the

Section assisted the Pacific Northwest Section of FPS with organizing its first annual meeting in several years.

EASTERN CANAdIAN SECTIoN

The Eastern Canadian Section has been active in organizing two conferences in the past year. In October 2012, speak-ers represented various fields, including academia, architecture, glulam manufacturing, CLT production, government, biorefining, and nanotechnology, to name a few, and the conference was opened by the Vice President of Research for Lakehead university. The conference was a success in raising awareness of issues facing the industry in the region.

In May 2013, the Section convened a conference on Global Forest Products Marketplace: Can Eastern Canada Com-pete. The conference featured speakers who included industry marketing professionals, government staff specializing in exports and markets, forest products marketing professors, and wood and forest products marketers. The event closed with a tour of the recently reopened Arbec OSB mill.
