Christian artists throughout the world have produced images of Jesus’ Nativity that express not only the universal beauty of the Incarnation, but also the particular uniqueness of the artist’s cultural heritage. This year, our exhibit features crèches that were all crafted in Mexico, offering viewers a glimpse of the artistic and spiritual richness that exists across the various regions of the country.
Like Our Lady of Guadalupe, many of these crèches take up images of indigenous cultures and imagine them anew in the radiant light of Christ, inviting us to see that all human culture finds its fulfillment, its meaning, in Jesus.
Everything that we do and make, when done in cooperation with the grace of God, can radiate that grace and draw others into the light of God’s love.
From the incredibly vibrant colors to the use of natural materials, these Mexican crèches express an earthy joy that gazes toward heaven. The beauty of the created world is transfigured as fibers and tin and clay and pigment become sacramentals of God’s love in the crèche. These images of Jesus’ birth remind us that God, the creator of the cosmos, has made our world his home in Jesus Christ and that he remains with us forever.

Ixtle, or vegetable fiber, is used to make many things in Central America: cords, nets, carpets, brushes. The fibers were first woven together by the artist to produce the fabric and braided ropes, which were then shaped to form the figures of this crèche. Simple materials refashioned with skill and patience are then knitted into objects of intricate beauty. God fashions us, his children, with an even greater skill, and an immeasurable love: “You formed my inmost being ; / you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; / wonderful are your works!” (Psalm 139:13–14).

The graceful proportions of the human figures give this crèche an aura of stateliness, of nobility, and of stillness. Time seems to stop as earth unites with heaven and God becomes man in Jesus, and everyone seems entranced as they contemplate the tiny child lovingly wrapped in star-strewn swaddling clothes and laid in the manger. Simultaneously, the use of bold colors and patterns in the garments of the onlookers fills the scene with a childlike joy: “Let heaven and nature sing!”
A Joint Venture

The many figures in this vibrant crèche were painstakingly crafted in the style of the Huichol people, who specialize in beadwork. The tiny beads are pressed into beeswax which surrounds clay forms to create intricate patterns and physical features. Joy and wonder are seen in each smiling face, and the tilt of the animals’ heads suggests curiosity at the infant in the manger. This crèche undoubtedly took many hours and many hundreds if not thousands of beads to make; it is proof that even the smallest of objects can be made into something that points to God, who became a tiny infant for our sakes.
Beads, Nothing but Beads

An inexpensive and widely available metal, tin is often called “the silver of the poor.” In the mid-1840s, Mexican artists repurposed empty tin cans that once held food shipped along the Santa Fe trail, turning them into beautiful works of art and beginning the great tradition of Mexican tinwork. Here, the tin has been painted in brilliant colors, symbolizing the joy of new life in Jesus Christ. In addition, the artist has set the Nativity scene not in a stable or a cave but in front of a church, reminding viewers that Jesus comes to us still in the gift of his Church, that Christ our Head remains with his Mystical Body: “And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).
silver of the poor

The whimsical figures in this crèche all have delicate, childlike, even doll-like features, a style often found in the Metepec artistic tradition. While the Magi are identified by their crowns and the poor shepherd by a peasant’s hat, the Holy Family and the angel are identified by unique halos. Rather than the traditional circular halo, these halos look more like sunbursts. In Christian art, the haloed figure is one who is filled with God’s holy light. In this crèche, the halos themselves have burst into radiant rays in the joy of this holy night, as the light of God pierces through the darkness in the birth of Jesus.
Sunburst Halos

MORRIS INN
Most crèches place the birth of Jesus in a stable, following the infancy narrative of Luke’s Gospel in which Mary “wrapped [Jesus] in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7b). Matthew’s infancy narrative, however, records the Magi coming to Bethlehem in search of Jesus, “and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother” (Matthew 2:11). Thus, this crèche places the Holy Family in a fine house, beautifully decorated with flowers and birds. The angels’ garments, too, are decorated with flowers, in vivid contrast to baby Jesus’ nakedness: God has stripped himself of glory and beauty to become a poor defenseless infant. Still, in whatever house the Christ-Child lays his head, that house is truly a house of God, a temple, a tabernacle, a house of prayer.
My House is a House of Prayer

The extraordinary details of this crèche arrest the gaze and capture the imagination, and the beauty of the scene elevates the humble materials used in its creation. The artist displays incredible ingenuity and skill in his weaving, and the fact that he has chosen to use wheat straw lends a Eucharistic overtone to this depiction of the Incarnation. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14). This same Word continues to become flesh in the mystery of the Eucharist, making his dwelling among us under the appearance of bread and wine, giving of himself—like the grain of wheat that dies—for the life of the world.
Lying on a Bed of Straw

Papier maché is created from the simplest of materials—water, flour, paper—yet the possibilities for its uses are limited only by the imagination of the artist. Here, the detailed figures belie the simplicity of their construction; the viewer does not see the poverty of their materials. Instead, in the hands of a capable artist, water, flour, and paper become Mary, Joseph, an angel, the Magi, even the infant Son of God lying in a manger—figures that inspire a new encounter with the mysteries of salvation.
The Drama of Salvation

The ornately decorated figures of this crèche recall the artistic style of the Spanish Golden Age (late-15th–mid-17th c.). Each human figure is clothed in elaborately decorated garb, which is further embellished with the addition of gold leaf. The metallic luster gives this crèche a radiant warmth, a glow that seems to come from within. It is as though the historical poverty of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem gives way to the spiritual truth of what has taken place: the King of kings and Lord of lords has been born, “and he shall reign for ever and ever” (Revelation 11:15).

As with the other crèches in this exhibit made of papier maché, the glossy, shiny finish of these beautifully detailed figures disguises the poverty of the materials used in their construction. This crèche has a reverent, almost liturgical quality: the openness of the manger makes it look more like an altar. Joseph’s cloak resembles the chasuble worn by the priest in the celebration of the Mass. The other figures stand at prayerful attention, gazing with adoration upon the infant Jesus, who “for [our] sake became poor although he was rich, so that by his poverty [we] might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). O come, let us adore him.
The Richness of Poverty
Venid y adoremos.

The beauty of nature takes center stage in this crèche: the poinsettia, the traditional Christmas flower, adorns the garments of several figures, while the Magi’s robes feature exotic creatures like the peacock and the phoenix. The style and techniques in this crèche predate Christianity’s arrival in Mexico; the artist uses them here to tell the story of the Incarnation in vivid color and detail, and to indicate that Christ’s love encompasses all time, space, and culture.
Wonders of Life

This crèche takes its name from the fact that it was the first in an important collection donated to the Marian Library in 2014. This isn’t just a crèche to be viewed; it is also a crèche to be used in prayer, as it features two candleholders and several candle decorations. As such, it is an important reminder that the crèche is never simply pretty art; it is a sacramental—a sign that God’s love and grace are still at work in the world, a sign that leads us to prayer and praise. We, too, can become signs of God’s love by allowing him to shape our hearts: “Lord, you are our father; / we are the clay and you our potter: / we are all the work of your hand” (Isaiah 64:7).
The Beginning of a Collection

This one-piece crèche offers viewers an intimate glimpse of the Nativity. We see the Holy Family in the moments just after Jesus’ birth, before the arrival of the shepherds or the Magi. Surrounded by aureoles of radiant light, Mary and Joseph gaze heavenward, their faces rapt with praise and gratitude. The angel hovers overhead, smiling with joy. The symmetry of the scene fills it with an air of serenity, inviting viewers in to contemplate the mystery of the Word made flesh.
In Praise of Harmony

Mary and Joseph are absent from this crèche. Instead, the focus is on the Magi—the tres reyes (three kings) who come bearing gifts for the infant Jesus. In Hispanic cultures, the feast of Epiphany on January 6 is observed with nearly as much celebration as Christmas itself. Festivities on el día de los reyes include processions, parades, and special traditional foods. Gifts are often exchanged again in remembrance of the gold, frankincense, and myrrh which the Magi brought to the King of kings.
Bringing Gifts (Ocumicho Three Kings)

In the detailed depictions of its figures, this crèche brings the Nativity of Jesus to life in a vivid, joyful way. The peasant-shepherd figures bring every facet of their lives to the manger—their families, their food, their livelihoods. The angel points skyward, telling viewers that the Child in the manger has come from God, that he is God. Most importantly, this crèche testifies to the importance of Mary in Hispanic Catholicism: not only is she present at the manger, but Our Lady of Guadalupe (patroness of Mexico) and Our Lady of Solitude (patroness of Oaxaca) also stand on either side of the angel.
Mother Mary Not Alone

This crèche is rendered in the Alebrije style and features several unusually designed and brightly colored animals, including the more familiar horse and camel as well as the more unexpected elephant and parrots. Instead of a manger, the Christ-Child is lying on a sarape with beautifully vivid colors, inviting viewers to consider the diverse ways in which various cultures have depicted the miraculous events of the Incarnation throughout the centuries, and yet also serving as a reminder that “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and tomorrow” (Hebrews 13:8).
It’s the Animals

The neutral colors of this clay crèche stand in contrast to so many other brightly colored crèches in this exhibit. Here, the eye is drawn not by vibrant or unusual color choices, but by the intricate patterns and playful details on the garments of the human figures. The Magi’s regal robes each boast a unique geometric design, while the shepherdess and Mary wear dresses with beautiful floral motives. Only Joseph wears a relatively simple garment, perhaps as a testimony to his status as a poor carpenter. Jesus, too, is barely clad, rather than wrapped completely in swaddling clothes. Here is the One who stripped himself of glory to become one like us in all things but sin.
Nacimiento Tradicional

Another beautiful example of the Alebrije art tradition (along with It’s the Animals), this crèche conveys a dynamism in the gestures of the angel, the Magi, the cow, even the infant Jesus himself. It also expresses a profound sense of contemplation in the bowed heads of Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds, and especially in Mary’s intensely prayerful pose. In the midst of the joyous chaos that often surrounds a birth, this new Mother continuously turns to God for wisdom and guidance.
The Privileges of Folk Art

This extraordinary crèche offers an array of figures to contemplate. The angels on either side are in fact two of the archangels named in Scripture: Raphael, the healer, holds the fish with which he cured Tobit of his blindness (Tobit 11:9–15a), and Michael, the warrior, holds his sword in one hand and blows a horn with the other, calling the faithful to fight against Satan (Revelation 12:7–9). The presence of the archangels symbolizes the reality that, in the Incarnation, God definitively heals the wounds caused by humanity’s sinfulness, and in the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus, death and even evil itself are conquered forever.
Angelic Nativity

This highly detailed crèche nestles the Nativity scene within a mountain, which is the place of divine revelation throughout Scripture. In this newborn infant, God is revealed as the God of love, who so longs to be in communion with his children that he became one of us. He whose power is without limit became a defenseless child, who would grow up and reveal the depths of his infinite love for us by dying so that we might live. In this scene, plants and animals also abound alongside the human figures, indicating that the entire breadth of creation is impacted by the birth of the Son of God, the One who brings all things to light and “makes all things new” (Revelation 21:5).
Mountaintop Nativity

The word “juxtaposition” best describes this crèche, with its combination of Aztec symbols alongside Christian images of the Holy Family. Instead of shepherds and Magi, Aztec figures dance around Mary and Joseph, who gesture with joyful open hands to the infant Christ. Sun and moon, animals and plants—all gather around the newborn Messiah with curiosity and wonder. The crèche is a vivid reminder that Jesus Christ, the redeemer of humanity and the incarnate Son of God, is the fulfillment of all human culture.
Mythological Nativity

In this crèche, every figure is holding something. Mary and Joseph hold the infant Jesus together, and appear as though they are joyfully embracing one another as a result. The angel holds a small torch to light the way to the newborn King, the shepherd holds a sheep, and the Magi hold not gold, frankincense, and myrrh, but a duck, a chicken, and a fish—humble objects found in daily life. Everyone brings a gift to the infant Son of God. What can we place at the manger?
Fish Not Myrrh

This Oaxacan crèche is a beautiful example of how art is for all people: from the master artisan to the eager novice, art is an individual and cultural expression of our relationship to the land, our relationship to one another, and especially our relationship to God. Here, simple lines indicate a sense of movement: Mary is ready to wrap the infant Jesus in his swaddling clothes, and Joseph kneels nearby as the faithful guardian of the Mother and the Son of God. The gold accents give this otherwise simple color palette a regal radiance; even the shepherd carries a golden water jar, signifying that, just as art is for all people, everyone, regardless of earthly status, is called to participate in the life of Christ, who is priest, prophet, and king.
Radiant Simplicity

Theatrical performances have long played an important role in Christianity. Beginning in the medieval period, mystery plays were performed that dramatized pivotal moments in the story of Jesus Christ, and these mystery plays found unique expression when Christianity made its way to Latin America. In this crèche, Jesus’ Nativity unfolds like a scene on a stage, and the figures are constructed so that their arms can be moved and posed, almost like puppets. This crèche captures the excitement and drama of the Nativity that continues to be brought to life in Christmas pageants year after year.
Teatro Nacimiento

The use of corkwood in this crèche lends it a rugged, impoverished beauty, reminding viewers of the utter humility of Jesus’ birth. Mary is the only person standing upright in the face of the Incarnation; everyone else—even the angel—adores the Christ-Child on bended knee. Beyond the protection of the cave, beyond the watchful gaze of the angel, the devil lies in wait. Often seen in crèches, the devil is a sign of the darkness that Jesus has been born to vanquish: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5).
Angel and Devil

The figures in this crèche are rendered in the style of the Alebrijes, which are brightly colored, fantastical papier maché sculptures that pioneering artist Pedro Linares first created in Mexico City. It was Manuel Jiménez who first adapted this style to woodcarving and brought it to Oaxaca. The colors, positions, and proportions of the animals are particularly eye-catching in this crèche. While most of the human figures either have their eyes closed or are looking at one another, the animals are entirely focused on the figure of the Christ-Child. The animals know their Master.
the Master’s Work

This crèche stands in defiance of what Pope Francis has called “the throw-away culture.” If even old car parts can be remade into something beautiful—into something that testifies to the love of God poured forth in Jesus—then nothing is beneath human attention, nothing and no one deserves to be thrown away. As we read in Scriptures: “For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have made; for what you hated, you would not have fashioned. And how could a thing remain, unless you willed it; or be preserved, had it not been called forth by you? But you spare all things, because they are yours, O Lord and lover of souls, for your imperishable spirit is in all things!” (Wisdom 11:24—12:1).
Rustic Christmas (Out of Rubble and Wreckage)

This Nativity takes up the tradition of shrine Madonnas, popular in the Middle Ages. Here, Mary is the central figure (as indicated by the effulgent halo similar to those seen in Sunburst Halos in Eck Visitors Center), yet she is also a shrine, displaying the mystery of the Incarnation for our contemplation. The domestic scene above the Nativity suggests that Christ should form the heart of the home, and the entire crèche invites viewers to imitate Mary, who “pondered all these things in her heart” (see Luke 2:19, 51).
Shrine Nativity

Human beings have been practicing the ancient art of weaving baskets and textiles for millennia. In this symbolic crèche, a half-basket provides shelter for the Holy Family, recalling the basket that Moses’ mother wove to protect her son from the Egyptians so that he could later lead his people from slavery into freedom. Mary and Joseph will soon take the infant Jesus into Egypt to protect him from Herod so that he can later lead his people from slavery to sin and death into the freedom of new life. Yet, as the vibrant red textiles and the prominent tree suggest, Jesus can only lead this exodus from slavery to freedom by shedding his blood, offering his life on the wood of the Cross. Just as God brought the Israelites to life out of death by guiding them through the Red Sea, so too will God bring to new life those who are baptized into the waters of Christ’s death (see Romans 6:3) and who follow him on the Way of the Cross.
In a Basket

Irene Aguilar, the artist who also created Radiant Simplicity (located in Geddes Hall), comes from a well-known family of folk artists in Oaxaca. This unique representation of the Nativity testifies to the fact that the birth of Jesus has forever changed all of time and has impacted all of space. A circle is an enclosed structure, yet the figures seated on the bowl’s rim face outward, inviting viewers on all sides of the crèche to share in their joy and encounter the newborn King. Not only that, but the footed clay bowl resembles a chalice, calling to mind the joy of encountering Jesus Christ in the Eucharistic liturgy where we eat his Body and drink his Blood, which he offers in love for the salvation of all.
A Nativity for the World

While not technically a crèche, this piece depicts a dark chapter in the Nativity story: the slaying or massacre of the innocents—the first to give their lives for Christ. We see Herod, filled with jealous rage over the news that a new King of the Jews has been born, dispatching his soldier to Bethlehem to kill any boys under two years of age. A river of blood flows down the steps from his palace, and yet it flows into beautiful flowers at the foot of a fountain, symbolizing eternal life for those who follow (or in this case anticipate) Jesus’ act of self-giving love on the Cross. As an imitation of Jesus’ death, a martyr’s death too brings forth new life: “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church” (Tertullian).
Slaying of the Innocents

In many cultures, the devil is portrayed as one of the figures in the Nativity scene in order to vividly display the contrast between divine and demonic forces at work in the world. Here, we have not one but three demons present, one of which is being actively restrained by the angel. The other human figures in the crèche seem unaware of this dark looming presence in the midst of such luminous exultation. Instead, their gaze is focused on the Christ-Child, as ours also ought to be. When we keep our eyes on Christ, “the light of the world” (John 8:12), the darkness of evil is scattered. If we look to Him who is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6) then “the truth will set us free” from the grasp of the Evil One and we “will walk in the light of life” (John 8:12 and 32).
The Devil Never Far
