de l’Union européenne.
• Si une université européenne accepte le TOEIC, elle acceptera

The format of the TOEFL iBT test
Reading Section
• Assesses how well you can read and understand the kind of materials used in an academic environment
• 3–4 reading passages– Passages are approximately 700 words long– Each passage is followed by 10 questions each– Passages are excerpts from university-level textbooks
that would be used in introductions to a discipline or topic
– Passages cover a variety of subjects, but all of the information you need to answer the questions is contained in the passage; you don’t need to be familiar with the topic of the passage
• Glossary feature available to define words not commonly used
Listening Section
• Measures your ability to understand conversations and lectures in English
• Includes listening for basic comprehension, listening for pragmatic understanding (speaker’s attitude and degree of certainty) and connecting and synthesizing information
• Conversations and lectures use campus-based language – 3–4 lectures; some with classroom discussion– 2–3 conversations with 2 speakers
Speaking Section
• Measures your ability to speak English effectively in academic
settings
• Tasks resemble real-life situations students might encounter
during class as well as outside the classroom
• Test takers respond by speaking into a microphone
• Responses are captured by the computer and sent to ETS for
scoring
4 speaking tasks based on academic topics and campus
situations
‒1 independent task
‒3 integrated tasks
–15 to 30 seconds of preparation time before each response
–Response times are 45 and 60 seconds
Writing Section
• Measures your ability to write in English in an academic setting.
• You must be able to present your ideas in a clear, well-organized manner.
• Two writing tasks:– 1 integrated
‒Listen to a short lecture and read a passage‒20 minutes
– 1 independent‒Response based on personal experience or opinion‒30 minutes
• Responses are typed using computer keyboard.
The TOEFL® Test Provides Truly Fair and Unbiased Scoring
• The Reading and Listening sections are scored by computer; the Speaking and Writing
sections are scored by human raters plus an electronic scoring engine.
• Each section receives a score from 0 to 30; the section scores are added up to a total
score from 0−120.
• There are no unfair TOEFL® test centers, because tests are not scored there. Tests are
only scored through a centralized scoring network.
• The Speaking section uses multiple human raters who do not know test takers’
identities. This prevents the bias that can occur in other tests that use a face-to-face
interview with a single rater.
• Universities know they can evaluate applicants fairly using TOEFL scores.
