INTRODUCTION

This directory consists of a compilation of names, addresses, and research interests of scientists cur- rently involved in research in the area of thermal biology. For practical purposes, thermal biology is broadly defined as the study of how living beings adapt to and/or regulate their inner and outer ther- mal environment. This includes, but is not restricted to, molecular, cellular, macrophysiological, anatomi- cal, electrophysiological, behavioural, psychophysical, and environmental approaches.

The researchers listed here either were contacted directly by me because of their publicly recognized involvement in thermal biology or were contacted by researchers who had been contacted directly by me. Consequently, it can be expected that every investiga- tor listed here is highly competent in some area of thermal biology. Unfortunately, it is not unlikely that some very competent thermal biologists have been inadvertently omitted, and their non-inclusion in this directory should by no means be interpreted as an indication of lesser scientific merit. Thermal biolo- gists who have been omitted are asked to accept my sincere apologies and to file a registration form at their earliest convenience.

Over 300 investigators from 41 countries returned a complete registration form. A very small number of well known thermal biologists repeatedly failed to return a registration form and had to be listed in an incomplete manner. The registrant statistics show that most thermal biologists (87%) earned a research doctorate rather than a medical degree. The degrees were obtained in the 1930s and 1940s (1%), 1950s (9%), 1960s (32%), 1970s (32%), or 1980s (26%). Many more researchers live in Europe (42%) and North America (34%) than in Africa (5%), Asia (15%), South America (1%), and Oceania (3%). Finally, more than 80% of the registrants work at a university, as opposed to private or federal research agencies.

This directory contains a long alphabetical listing of all registrants (including full addresses) and a much shorter geographical listing (alphabetized within each country), For each registrant, the areas of expertise and methodological approaches (cf. Table 1) are indicated but, because of space limitations, thematic listings were not included in this directory. For sake of uniformity, all names of institutions are printed in English format (e.g. Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. instead of Akademiya Nauk CCCP and Nicholaus Copernicus University instead of

Uniwersytet Mikolaja Kopernika) and all academic degrees are standardized (BA for bachelor, MA for master, MD for medical doctor, DVM for veterinary doctor, and PhD for research doctor).

In order for a directory to be useful, it must be kept updated. All thermal biologists are urged to cooper- ate. Please help keep the directory up-to-date by (1) registering, if you have not done so yet, (2) urging your graduate students to register as they graduate, (3) reporting changes in your address or interests, (4) indicating corrections for misprinted information, (5) making suggestions for improvements of any type, and unfortunately also by (6) reporting the passing away of colleagues who are no longer with us. A registration form is included at the end of the direc- tory; please feel free to photocopy it. I will try to have a new edition of the directory printed every 4 yr.

Finally, I am glad to be able to acknowledge help received from a number of people during the 2 yr that it took me to compile this registry. Drs M. Cabanac, E. Hohtola, and T. Hori helped me expand my original list of prospective registrants. Drs Z. Szel6nyi and L. Jansk~ helped me reach scientists in East Europe. Several other thermal biologists have shown special interest in the directory in one way or another: A. Haim, J. Mercer, D. Sergent, V. Subbarao, G. Tcherniaev, and M. Zhao. Last but not least, Dr Ken Bowler, editor of the Journal of Thermal Biology, was generous and very efficient in providing space for the publication of this directory in the pages of the journal.
