S P O N S O R E D S E C T I O N K AT H I M E R I N I l S3SATURDAY - SUNDAY, MARCH 18-19, 2017

Today, more than ever, societyhas developed expectations forinstantaneous gratification indaily life for just about every-thing. Young people seem con-fused about what principles andvalues to adhere to, being un-clear about the boundaries be-tween their personal interestsand well being and those of theircommunities. Kindness, selfless-

ness and humility are sometimesconsidered characteristics of aweak person whereas being dif-ficult, selfish and aggressive areconsidered elements of a strongand successful person. Today’sethical and leadership crisisworldwide brings about a worldfull of conflicts, wars and vio-lence.

It is therefore the distinct re-sponsibility of academic institu-tions, especially the leading ones,to inspire significance and pre-pare young people not only to be-come successful professionalsbut also to develop principles andvalues in order to become mem-bers of a global society and servehumanity, with their actionsguided by ethos.

Significant institutions arethose which, in addition to ful-filling their mission, vision andgoals are committed to and con-tinuously engaged in servingtheir community, country, re-gion and the world.

Engaging all constituencies ofan institution in a collective,long-term commitment to serv-ing humanity has many mani-festations. These include provid-ing relief to less fortunate or lessprivileged human beings, pro-tecting the environment and car-ing for animals.

The faculty and academic lead-ers of a significant institutionhave a fundamental role in de-veloping leaders with ethos. They must be an example to theirstudents, inspiring them to de-velop their authentic leadershipidentity, which is directly af-fected by the educational expe-riences they gain within the in-stitution. Therefore, a leadermust be the source of kindness, ethos, authenticity, intelligence, creativity, wisdom and happi-ness.

Significant institutions fosterthe culture of their communityserving humanity by building onthe following three pillars:

1st Acquiring skills and knowl-edge by formal learning withinthe classroom and through a ho-listic curriculum

2nd Adopting principles andvalues encouraging everyone touse them as a moral compass intheir daily life

3rd Inspiring the assumptionof responsibilities and account-abilities beginning with one’shome, academic institution andthe community

Academic Institutions aremolding the minds, souls andspirit of students in order to servehumanity. Over the past decade, believing that it is possible totransform the world and aspiringto contribute towards creating amore sustainable, humanitarianplanet, ACS Athens has beenbuilding the foundations forserving humanity. Holistic edu-cation has included educationalexperiences that raise awarenessand empower students to under-stand today’s global issues, en-couraging empathy, and equip-ping students with the skills nec-essary for behaving responsibly, taking action in thoughtful andethical ways. Developing socialinterest, civic engagement andcommitment becomes an inte-gral way of life.

From a school wide Wellnessprogram which fosters an envi-ronment of safety and inclusionand embraces diversity, to ma-terializing the right and accessto education for ALL children, serving humanity is a reality atACS Athens.

A current example of suchcommitment can be seen in theACS Athens student-led program

“Youth to Youth – Educate ALLChildren.” This program edu-cates all students on the migrantcrisis and expands to communityinvolvement in an initiativewhich prepares unaccompaniedrefugee children to be reinte-grated in the educational envi-ronment and to society in gen-eral. The “Y2Y” program beganin the spring of 2016 with 15 un-accompanied refugee childrenwho were welcomed into theACS Athens community in a spe-cial immersion program. Today, four of these children are totallyintegrated in the ACS Athenscommunity, through a scholar-ship program. In collaborationwith the HOME Project Οrgani-zation (hοmeproject.org), ACSAthens is introducing new groupsof unaccompanied refugee chil-dren into this program during the2016-17 academic year.

Empowered to transform theworld as architects of their ownlearning, students and educatorscontinue to build upon their com-mitment to serving humanity, exemplified in the following proj-ects which have taken place overthe years:

Youth Optimizing LeadershipOpportunities (YOLO): Each stu-dent’s reflection on local orglobal issues on “how the worldwould be if…,” providedgrounds for taking action suchas distributing bags full of gro-ceries to the Klimaka shelter forthe homeless.

Village Project: Ongoing since2007, the program takes stu-dents to visit the rural village ofZacharo in the Peloponnese andoffer their services helping thelocal needs.

Food for a Friend Project: Stu-dents raise funds and cook mealsfor 50 people in collaboration withthe Aghia Paraskevi Church.

Street Beat Project: In supportof an effort of the Mayor of Halan-dri, students distribute food tohomeless persons on Saturdays.

You-4-Kenya Book Drive: Stu-dents collected over 200 booksand sent them to the MakariosOrphanage in Nieri, Kenya, in-tended for abandoned childrensuffering from AIDS.

Football Against Racism in Eu-rope (FARE): Students partici-pated in this tournament to raiseawareness of all kinds of racism.

Annual visit to Pyrgos Retire-ment Home: An ongoing projectwhere, in addition to donatingfood from a schoolwide fooddrive, students spend qualitytime with senior citizens.

Therapeftirion Lehainon - IBclass retreat: Each year, IB stu-dents visit this institution for thementally challenged and spendtime with the patients, helpingto brighten their days, while as-sisting with errands and otherneeds such as painting the build-ing walls.

Song and Dance Show: Stu-dents, faculty and staff membersproduce and perform in a showopen to the community where theentrance fee is a bag of groceries. All bags collected are donated tothe discounted social grocerystores of Aghia Paraskevi.

Tyros Water Project: In 2006,as the culmination of a semes-ter-long project focused on build-ing integrity, learning humilityand nurturing empathy, 9thgrade students organized abeach cleaning in the village ofTyros, Arcadia, on “World Envi-ronment Day”.

Israeli-Palestinian Project: In2010, students traveled to Israeland the West Bank in order tofilm a short documentary on theIsraeli-Palestinian struggle, fol-lowing a semester-long researchproject on the issue.

In these challenging timeswhere self-centered mindsetsexpect quick gratification, andempathy is weakened, signif-icant educational institutionsshould be the catalyst for trans-forming the educational expe-rience of their learners and en-gaging them in serving hu-manity. It is more importantthan ever that we prepare ourstudents to navigate their lifeship in the ocean of future un-certainties.

Why Study the IB Diploma at Ionios School? At Ionios School we strongly believe thatlife in the 21st century will require stu-dents to be internationally-minded andto have well-developed critical thinkingskills. With this in mind, we have devel-oped an IB Diploma programme thatpromotes the aims and objectives of theIB philosophy, and helps students de-velop the characteristics of the IB Learn-er Profile. We have highly-qualified teachers, all ofwhom have attended IB training work-shops so as to teach on the Diploma pro-gramme. They are an international, ac-ademic team, many of whom, apart frombeing experienced in IB teachers, are alsoIB examiners. Above all, they were se-lected for their ability to present complexideas in a simple and straightforwardmanner and because they are all com-mitted to the IB philosophy. Several ofour teachers bring experience from theworkplace into the classroom, thus en-riching students’ life skills. All classes are taught in English with the

exception of Greek, French and German.Classes are small and there is no need toresort to external support. Every studenthas their own Personal Tutor (AcademicConsultant) who assists them in theirprogress and personal development. This is done in a varietyof ways, including participating in Model

United Nations and Model European Par-liament conferences. As well as this Inter-national perspective, students will learnabout their own culture(s) and developtheir knowledge and understanding oftheir own language in much greater depth.CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) at Ioniosenables students to be active in the widercommunity and become part of an inter-national network of like-minded educatorsand students.
