Newsletter March 2017

International Federation for Emergency Medicine

Looking ahead

Warm regards to all of our members and I hope you enjoy this update on what is happening at IFEM.

In April 2016 IFEM celebrated 25 years since the signing of IFEM’s Charter. Since that time, the Executive, Board and As-sembly have been firmly focussed on the future of IFEM. We have used the feedback received from our strategic work-shop in Las Vegas to create a Vision and Mission, setting the scene for how we grow. This has now been finalised and I am pleased that there was agreement to build on our original Charter, and broaden IFEM’s remit to cover emergency care de-velopment around the world. It embodies our key roles of advocacy, collaboration and standards of practice.

The Board is considering a business plan and a governance structure that supports this, but at present, the priority is to ensure a financially stable future.

An important part of this is the development of the IFEM Foundation, founded in October 2016. It is dedicated to sup-porting the IFEM in advancing education, collaboration, cooperation, and project development for Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine Systems development around the globe. I encourage you to promote the new Foundation to your members and colleagues. So please spread the word!

As always, thank you for your ongoing work in helping improve emergency care worldwide.

Lee Wallis

The IFEM Foundation has been launched The International Federation for Emergency Medicine Foundation was established in 2016 to support the work of the IFEM in advancing education, collaboration, cooperation, and projects for Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine Systems development around the globe.

Some of IFEM's work includes collaboration with the World Health Organization to promote global high quality emergency care, development and distribution of training curricula in Emergency Medicine, con-ducting and co-organizing training courses and conferences, sponsoring emergency healthcare personnel from low income countries to attend these courses and conferences, developing and promoting career resources for healthcare professionals, developing and distributing educational resources for the public worldwide, and supporting internation-al research related to Emergency Medicine.

The IFEM Foundation is a US-based not-for-profit 501c3 Company. Donations to the IFEM Foundation are fully tax deductible under US law.

See the web site www.ifemfoundation.org for more information and instructions on how to donate to the Foundation either by postal mail or on-line.

In anticipation, we thank you for your support of IFEM!

Call for Expressions of Interest:

Behavioural Emergencies Special Interest Group

The objective of the IFEM Behavioural Emergencies SIG is to provide a forum for networking between interested individuals. In particular this forum will seek to foster collaboration in the areas of research, best practices and guidelines, education and training, and advocacy.

Trainees Special Interest Group

IFEM wants to form a Trainees Special Interest Group (SIG) to serve as a voice for trainees (residents and registrars) within IFEM, and to develop the bylaws and structure for an International Trainees Organization (which could then be an ex-officio member of IFEM).

If you are interested in joining, please send a brief paragraph outlining your interest and background, or CV, to the IFEM Secretariat. Of course you are welcome to join our existing Groups also.

IFEM anticipates other Groups for Trauma, Critical Care and Infomatics.

Translators

One of IFEM’s key communication objectives is to provide translations of IFEM policies and guidelines in Arabic, Mandarin, French and Spanish. IFEM has a Spanish translation Committee that oversees translations. IFEM mem-bers who would like to assist with translations to French are invited to submit expressions of interest to the Commu-nications Committee, via the Secretariat.

Your Research Project?

IFEM’s Research Committee can endorse your Emergency Medicine Research Project or Col-laboration.

The project must be applicable to emergency medicine in more than one country, but may not necessarily be performed in more than one country.

IFEM also has a Checklist in Ethical Conduct in Research.

13th September 2017 is

World Sepsis Day

Find out how you can be in-volved here.

Gift from Dr Gautam Bodiwala

During the celebrations of IFEM’s Silver Jubilee last April, IFEM’s first elected President, Dr Gautam Bodiwala, presented Dr Jim Holliman with the gift of a President’s Badge of office.

This will be worn by the IFEM President during offi-cial occasions.

A list of IFEM Fees can be access here.

Phishing/Spam Website on International Conference on Emergency Medicine

Just a reminder about the improper use of the ‘ICEM’ name. An organisation known as ‘World Academy of Science En-gineering and Technology’ (WASET) continues to promote false conferences. The site lists these meetings along with hundreds of other international conferences not related to emergency medicine, on their website (ie. an ICEM in Rome in 2018). It is believed this is a scam website and confirm that these conferences are not related to IFEM, and we invite you to share this with your members. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Academy_of_Science,_Engineering_and_Technology
