IFAW is a world leader in emergencyresponse:

In the USA, IFAW helped ederal andstate agencies develop disaster-responseguidelines and contributed to legislationrequiring evacuation plans or animalsduring disasters.

A ter the devastating earthquake in China,IFAW was the only international animal

wel are organization invited to help cats, dogs and arm animals in 18 villages.

IFAWs bear rescue center in Russia haspioneered hand-rearing o orphaned cubs

    or return to the wild.

In India, we provide veterinary care andround-the-clock bottle eeding to orphanedleopard cubs, baby elephants and babyrhinos ... some have lost their mothers infoods, some to poachers.

IFAW is also the global leader in oilspill animal rescue.

We have responded to 25 oil spills in 15countries. Following the Treasure oil spill

continued long a ter the emergency adedrom the headlines. IFAW kept working with

valiant caregivers over weeks and monthsollowing the res. As wounds healed and

animals regained their strength, their release was met with tears o joy.

Whenever horrible disasters like thisstrike, IFAW veterinarians and emergencyresponders rush to the scene ... rescuingde enseless creatures, large and small.

in South A rica in 2000, we led a massiveoperation to clean, rehabilitate and releasean entire population o A rican penguins ...saving 19,000 lives.

Sometimes its an individual animalthat desperately needs our help.

With our partner organization Wildli e Trusto India (WTI), IFAW is hand-raising a pair oorphaned clouded leopard cubs, ound by

villagers in northeast Assam. Our plan is torehabilitate these very rare cubs and returnthem to the wild.

This is the frst time clouded leopards have been admitted to the IFAW rescue acilities in northeast India, said WTIs Bhaskar Choudhury. It provides an important indicator o the presence o this species in the Indo-

    Bhutan region.

IFAW responds whenever animals arein danger ... rescuing cats and dogs ...

administering antibiotics to arm animals ...saving orphaned wildli e and returning themto their natural homes.

IFAWs expertise was a criticalfactor in the successful releaseof 372 stranded penguins inBrazil the largest in South

    Americas history.

In times o disaster, everyones rst concernis naturally or human sa ety. Humanitarianorganizations rush to aid people, o tencon ronting complete chaos, and cant stop

to look a ter pets. IFAWs role is to get theanimals out o harms way.

IFAW rescuers scour fooded streets, charredorests and crumbling buildings looking or

animal survivors. We provide veterinary careand shelter, and set up hotlines to reunitecats and dogs with loving owners. Thegrate ul purr or play ul bark o a companioncom orts amilies who have lost everything, proving once again the miracle o thehuman-animal bond.

IFAW worked with the United Statesgovernment to pass an importantright whale protection measure. Theregulation calls or ships longer than65 eet to reduce their speed to 10knots within 20 nautical miles o keyports along the US East Coast whenright whales are in the area. IFAW isdelighted with the US governmentscommitment to reducing the number oships colliding with whales, speci callythe highly endangered North Atlanticright whale, in this dense shipping area.

A ter 15 years o campaigning by IFAW, the ban onhe cruel sport o hunting wild animals with dogs wasnacted on February 18, 2005. The law made it ariminal o ence to use dogs to chase ox, deer, mink nd hares. This year marks the 4th anniversary o thean and IFAW continues to de end this important piece

IFAW is helping to relocate 83 elephants rom certaindeath in Phirilongwe, Malawi, where they came intoconfict with villagers as their habitat decreased, tothe protected Majete Wildli e Reserve. Previously, allthe animals at Majete had been poached to the brink o extinction. But now the park is secure with park rangers on patrol and a ence and ready to welcomethese elephant amilies.

German ad agency Springer & Jacoby produced a clever animatedad or IFAWs campaign to make consumers think twice aboutbuying animal souvenirs while travelling abroad.

The ad was directed by Ismail Arca, animation & computer graphicssupervisor at George Lucas company Industrial Light and Magic. He has received several academy nominations and won a n academy

award or Pirates o the Caribbean. When he heard about thisproject he instantly agreed to work or us ree o charge. So dideverybody else. German public television broadcast a segment onthe ad and our campaign, and the ad plays regularly on ve German

TV stations. It received an audience award at Germanys Spotlightestival and a bronze award at the Art Directors Club in New York.

The research team onboard IFAWs Song o the Whale spent a long

season rom May to October 2008 sailing around the islands o the Azores, Canaries and Madeira. The purpose o the trip? Listening or the sounds o beaked whales to determine their presence in the area.

The team was delighted to hear Cuviers and Blainvilles whalesand made some interesting acoustic recordings. They also took photographs o these very elusive creatures.

IFAW scientists hope to develop acoustic detection techniques or beaked whales in order to identi y habitat hotspots that wouldbene t rom protection. Beaked whales are especially vulnerableto loud noise, particularly rom military sonar.

Six critically endangered gyr alcons, packed tightlyin a cardboard box, were con scated by o cials atthe Chkalovskiy Military Airport near Moscow. They

were handed over to IFAW or rehabilitation in abid to save their lives. Dangerously under ed, theyrequired immediate veterinary care and ood. Threesurvived, and they were released back to the wildin Kamchatka in April.

our mission and our e ectiveness, said Juliana and her horses at home in Colorado.

IFAW CEO Fred ORegan. In tribute to her generosity, we have dedicated the open habitat at the heart o our new headquarters as Julianas Meadow.

Juliana Kickert was an animal lover who shared her li e with two horses, two cats and a dog. Her philosophy was simple: People should open their hearts to helpless animals. A generous longtime supporter o IFAW, Julianahas always trusted Fred to know best where money is needed.

IFAW placed 200 li e-size cardboard hawksbill turtleson the shore at Bournemouth beach to look as thoughthey had just crawled out o the sea to lay their eggs.In the wild, this is when they are most vulnerable tohunters who slaughter them to turn their shells intotourist trinkets.

Intrigued beachgoers were encouraged to pick upthe IFAW turtles and turn them over to read about theuse o turtle shells or souvenirs and how to avoidsupporting the deadly trade in wildli e souvenirs.

In celebration o Earth Day, April 22, Disney released aremarkable movie called EARTH. Narrated by James EarlJones, EARTH ollows the ascinating journeys o threedi erent animal amilies across this planet we call home.

The worldwide peace movement ... the Woodstock musicestival the frst moon landing 1969 was a year marked by events and ideas that changed our planet orever. So it

should come as no surprise that the decade also marked the beginning o a new movement or animals.

    The World is Watching

    As IFAW Makes History!

IFAWs mission began when a group o caringindividuals stepped out onto the Canadianice in 1969. Since that time, IFAWs campaignto end the Canadian commercial seal hunthas been marked by many successes andchallenges. And this year stands to beremembered as a year o historic victories:

In March, IFAWs 15-year campaign inRussia resulted in a ban on the slaughter o seal pups under 1 year old. The ban

ollowed Prime Minister Vladimir Putinscondemnation o the hunt as abloody business.

IFAW was the rst organization to exposethe cruelty within Russia and we have

worked at the highest levels o governmentto end this hunt.

In May, the European Parliament voted toban the trade o seal products within all 27member states o the European Union as adirect result o IFAWs campaigning.

For the frst time in history, a braveCanadian Senator named Mac Harb has

sided with IFAW and introduced a bill to endCanadas commercial seat hunt orever.

The sealing industry is in economic turmoilas seal pelt prices are expected to drop yetagain this year. In act, the EU ban may meanthe end o Canadas commercial seal hunt.

For 40 years, our supporters have helped usght or, and win, solid advances against this

hunt. We secured the US import ban o sealproducts in 1972. We won an EU ban on thetrade in whitecoat baby seals in 1983. Andnow, the historic Harb seal bill could relegatethis cruel and unsustainable hunt to history.

So many people have worked so hard on thisor so long, said IFAW CEO Fred ORegan.

This could be the beginning o the end o acruel, waste ul hunt that is really beneath thedignity o a great nation like Canada.
