British students dodging debt and heading abroad

The number of students applying to UK universities fell by 7.4% between 2011 and 2012, as more and more students take advantage of cheaper tuition fees elsewhere.

Official figures released by university admissions group UCAS in February showed 44,000 fewer applicants to UK courses this year than last, with increased tuition fees thought to be behind the drop.

Course costs in many European countries are much cheaper than the UK, with an undergraduate degree at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands priced at €1,733 (£1,440) for an academic year, less than a sixth of the £9,000 yearly fee charged by many UK institutions.

The figures come after Universities Minister David Willets encouraged UK students to head abroad to improve networking and “cultural fluency” last year.

Sutton Trust launches US summer school scheme

The Sutton Trust will offer UK students the chance to experience undergraduate study in America after launching a US version of its successful summer school programme.

The pilot scheme will see 64 under-privileged students given the opportunity to study at Yale University for a week, with all costs covered by the Trust in partnership with the Fulbright Commission. Students will receive support before and after the course.

“With tuition fees increasing dramatically in England and some generous financial aid packages in the US, studying abroad is more attractive than before from a cost perspective,” said Chairman of the Sutton Trust Sir Peter Lampl. The deadline for applications is 16th April, with the programme set to take place in July.

Lady Gaga Launches Born This Way Foundation at Harvard

Lady Gaga and Oprah Winfrey launched an anti-bullying campaign in February at the prestigious Harvard University.

The opening of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation saw the star interviewed by Oprah Winfrey in front of more than 1,100 students, staff and guests at Harvard’s campus in Boston, Massachusetts. “I believe that if you have revolutionary potential, you must make the world a better place and use it,” she told her audience, before urging them to “challenge meanness and cruelty.”

Lady Gaga has invested $1.2m of her own money into the Foundation, which aims to celebrate individuality, promote civic engagement and encourage self-expression. You can visit the Born This Way Foundation’s website at www.bornthiswayfoundation.org

£26million postgraduate scholarships boost for Oxford University

Oxford University has received a £26million donation to fund more tgab 35 postgraduate scholarships from Mica Ertegun, the widow of entrepreneur Ahmet Ertegun. The fund will be reserved exclusively for students wishing to study the humanities at the institution.Mr Ertegun was best known as founder and A&R man of Atlantic Records. Before his death in 2006, he was regarded one of the most influential figures in the music industry, credited with playing a key role in developing the careers of artists like Ray Charles, Elton John and the Rolling Stones. The money will also go towards establishing Ertegun House, which will act as a base for students and for a “senior scholar in residence”, who will provide mentoring and organise lectures, seminars and concerts.John Paul Jones, bass player for Led Zeppelin, described Ertegun as a “soul man”, adding that the money “couldn’t have come from a better place.”

Sharp increase in overseas students studying in Scotland

The number of non-EU students studying in Scotland has soared over the last year, recently released figures have revealed. The number of students from outside the European Union that have taken up study in Scotland has jumped by more than 11% since February 2011 – and the most significant increase is in students from China.Figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) show there are now 6145 Chinese students studying in Scotland, compared with 4680 this time last year – an increase of 33%.Universities Scotland, representing Higher Education institutions in the country, said that although the statistics are “encouraging”, tighter immigration rules brought in by the UK Border Agency mean that numbers are likely to drop in the near future.President of the National Union of Students in Scotland, Robin Parker, attributed the increase to Scotland’s reputation as a welcoming country with world class educational institutions.

Visa restrictions could put international students off study in the UK

New visa restrictions could put international students off studying in the UK, two reports published at the end of February suggest.Tightening of immigration rules could lead to “unintended consequences”, said a government commissioned report chaired by Sir Tim Wilson, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire. A separate report, entitled “Education: A Great British Export?” reveals that, although the numbers of international students in the UK grew between 2001 and 2009, the number decreased slightly in 2010 to 12% of the international market.

One of the restrictions imposed by the UK Border Agency last year will see the option of post-study work visa for international students being discontinued from April. The report argues against the restriction, citing a range of organisations that have highlighted the damage it will do to numbers of international students in the UK.

Information ManagerThe indispensible employee

What is Information Management?Information is the lifeblood of every organisation, and every organisation needs to manage its in-formation flow to stay alive. In the digital age, this requires a whole new set of skills.

The pervasive nature of the Internet is obvious to everyone in the modern world, and the pace of change isn’t slowing. Citizens and organisations face the same challenge: keep up with new infor-mation technologies or be left behind. Organisa-tions need employees who are not just information literate, but are information experts; employees who can manage the information of an entire busi-ness to keep it competitive in today’s switched-on world.

The information literate employee will be able to identify, organise, evaluate, store and disseminate information in the most effective and efficient manner. But importantly, he or she will also under-stand how organisations work, and how to take into account people’s needs and behaviour.

This employee is the organisation’s Information

Manager; the one person who can ensure that the right information reaches the right people, at the right time and in the right format. The Information Manager commands a powerful mix of people skills and knowledge of organisa-tional behaviour and processes, as well as an un-derstanding of the required information systems and resources.

As organisations adapt and evolve to the chang-ing information landscape, the Information Man-ager has become not just an advantage, but a vital component in any business. The premium that employers put on information literate employees continues to rise and rise.

“As organisations adapt and evolve to the changing information landscape, the Information Manager has become not just an advantage, but a vital component in any business.”

What can you get from an Information Management course?Graduates from an information management pro-gramme acquire theoretical and practical knowl-edge which they will be able to apply confidently in organisations of all kinds. Reflecting the multi-disciplinarity of the field, information management degree programmes offer a carefully chosen mix of social, management and technical aspects, such as information society, organisational learning and behaviour, information systems modelling and web design.

Candidates for these programmes typically have a diversity of first degree subject backgrounds, ranging from science and technology through to social sciences and humanities, whilst graduates are equipped with the a blend of knowledge, skills and awareness which enable effective mediation between information users, resources and informa-tion systems.

Career prospects in Information ManagementIf you become an information management gradu-

ate, you are instantly employable in a vast range of industries and roles. You will have practical experi-ence in the use of new ICTs and personal aware-ness, and skills relevant to information manage-ment in a variety of workplace roles, e.g. skills in information literacy, communication, group work and research. This allows you to fit straight in to a specialist in-formation management position, such as Chief Information Officer, Information Systems Manager, Knowledge Manager or Corporate Planner.

For instance, Jonathan Hyde who completed the MSc in Information Management in Sheffield in 2005 is currently employed by Cheltenham Bor-ough Council as a Business Consultant in Web Technologies. From the same course, Chia-Hui Feng is now working as a Business Analyst for GDS Electronic Data Systems in Taiwan.

More broadly you will have a solid foundation for taking up a variety of work roles right across today’s rapidly-changing, information-dependant society.

Becoming a chiropractor is a life choice.Chiropractic is a major healthcare profession and comes with many expectations, particularly from your patients.

As a chiropractor you should not only demonstrate knowledge and expertise, you should also embody the ethics and philosophy of a healthcare practitioner and be particularly interested in wellness.

If you decide on a career in chiropractic, you will have the opportunity to serve patients whilst enjoying the prestige, financial position, personal freedom and sense of achievement which most people can only dream of.

Numerous opportunities exist for you to interact with people of all ages including children and the elderly, to provide care to patients with acute and chronic

conditions and to provide holistic and preventative health care for all who need it.

Although the majority of your patients will be consulting you for neck and back pain, the chiropractic profession is the authority on spinal care and musculoskeletal health. You will also be able to give advice on all aspects of healthy living.

Many chiropractors also specialise in a particular field becoming experts at, for example, treating sports

injuries. Indeed, most Premier League Football Clubs in the UK have chiropractors to advise and treat their players and in addition, the chiropractic profession is part of the medical team at the 2012 Olympics.

Rehabilitation and exercise for the elderly is another area of great interest, and as the population is growing older, this is another very worthwhile field in which to specialise.

Typically you will work in a clinic with modern facilities and specialist equipment often with chiropractic colleagues but also sometimes sharing with other healthcare practitioners thereby providing integrated care. As such you will be regarded as a valuable and important health resource in your local community.

Dr. Kenneth Vall, AECC Principal

Chiropractors enjoy the flexibility of being able to live and work just about anywhere in the world.

Almost 100% of AECC graduates have gone on to find employment as a chiropractor within six months of graduating.

The AECC campus is situated in Bournemouth, just meters away from our award winning seven mile beach and surrounded by fabulous entertainment options and gorgeous countryside.

Why study

in the UK?

T ravelling abroad to study will improve your future prospects and develop you as a person in ways that it is hard to imagine.

Adjusting to a new culture, mingling with people from multiple countries as a matter of course, car-rying out your day to day life in a language that isn’t your native one – immediate graduate pros-pects aside, this is an education for life.A degree from a British university is prestigious in the international job market. The fact that you were accepted onto a course and made the de-cision to move to another country for it already puts you way ahead of the curve when it comes to employment prospects. But why particularly a UK degree? In some cultures, it could be perceived as rude to challenge the authority of lecturers by voicing

your own opinions in class. In the UK, however, this debate and the challenging of well-established norms is actively encouraged. Students at British universities are encouraged to think indepen-dently, to question foregone conclusions and to develop their own opinions, whatever subject they might be studying. The benefits are numerous: confidence, willingness to take risks, the capacity

to move beyond simply what is stated right in front of them on the lecture slides. Healthy debate is one of the things that British universities excel at. The UK is without a doubt an interesting place to live – possibly more so if you are a student than in any other case. Brimming with history, culture and multiculturalism; with free museums and galleries in their thousands – if you throw yourself into every opportunity and take full advantage of your time in the UK you are almost certainly going to emerge as more of a broad-minded and knowledgeable graduate than someone who has simply complet-ed a degree in their home country. UK universities are massively international places. Studying at one of them will put you right in the centre of one of the most inclusive communities that can be found anywhere. It is almost certain that there will be other international students on your course, or that you will find yourself living amongst others straight away – universities like to mix international students together, especially in halls of residence. It is also very likely that you will find societies centred around your home country, where you will have the opportunity to meet other

internationals – as well as people who are just in-terested in learning about your country’s culture or language.

Who studies at British universities – what is the make-up of the international student commu-nity? The answer, of course, is that it is extremely diverse. In the academic year 2009-10, almost 406,000 international students were registered on Higher Education courses in the UK. This is a 10% increase on the previous year. Academically, the top three subjects for international students were Business (33% of students enrolled were interna-tional), Engineering and Technology (32%) and Computer Science (24%). Overall, 16% of all stu-dents on university courses in the UK were classed as international. The three biggest recruiters of international stu-dents were London School of Economics (65% of all students in 2009-10), followed by Imperial College (40%) and University College London (36%). Don’t think that all international students necessarily flock to the capital, though – significant percentages of non-UK students (over one quarter of those enrolled) can also be found at Warwick, Bedfordshire, Manchester, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Oxford.*From outside the EU it is India, China, Nigeria and the US that send the most students to study on British soil (numbers from Nigeria and the US are almost identical), whilst from within the EU the top three are the Republic of Ireland, Germany and France.

In general, studying abroad proves that you are dedicated, adventurous and prepared to open yourself up to new experiences. Successful gradu-ates are perceived as some of the most intellectu-ally forward-thinking people in the world. A de-gree from a British university is likely to be invalu-able – both at home and internationally. Information on studying in the UK, application, choosing courses, English language proficiency, international events, financial matters, visas and various other things can be found at www.ucas.com/students/wheretostart/nonukstudents Also check out www.educationuk.org – the section of the British Council website that caters solely for internationals wanting to study in the UK.*UKCISA (http://www.ukcisa.org.uk/about/statistics_

Money is the main reason why most com-panies exist. They either want to make it, save it, use it more effectively or ad-

vise other companies on how to make it, save it or use it more effectively. Even charities and not-for-profit companies need to make sure they use their funds in the most efficient way. All organisations have one thing in common. They need profession-als who understand finance, who can play a funda-mental role in running the business and who can help make the business a success.

In the UK, these finance professionals are most likely to have gained a professional qualification from one of the main accountancy bodies (ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA, ICAS and ICAEW). For instance, the ACCA is a member of the International Federa-tion of Accountants (IFAC), which is comprised of 167 members and associates in 127 countries. Each member and associate is a professional accountancy organisation recognized by law or general consensus within the respective country as substantial national accountancy organisation. So, around the world, many of today’s accountants and finance managers may have progressed their careers through a professional qualification route from one of these organisations without having followed the University route. Increasingly, as with many other professions, nowadays employers are looking for Masters Qualifications when recruiting to more senior roles such as Controller, Finance Director, Chief Financial Officer and other middle/senior management positions. In addition, a Mas-ters degree helps prospective students to develop the depth and breadth of accounting standards, allows students to choose a specific specialisation in accounting and can help individuals meet the education requirements for earning a professional accounting licence in some countries.

Convert your professional qualification to a Masters in Accounting and Finance in just nine months

The Master of Accounting and Finance fast-track programme at Glasgow Caledonian University al-lows candidates who have a professional qualifica-tion from any accountancy body in the world that is recognised by IFAC (International Federation of Accountants), to commence studies in January each year and graduate with a Masters degree in November of the same year (just nine months).

Available specialism routes include:• Master of Accounting and Finance• Master of Accounting and Finance (Oil & Gas) • Master of Accounting and Finance (Public Sector Financial Management)• Master of Finance

With an award-winning campus located in the heart of Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian Univer-sity holds CIMA and ACCA accredited “premier status” as a tuition provider, as well as being a Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) Centre of Excellence; offers Accounting and Finance students access to wealth of experience in a broad-based department covering banking, financial services, law and economics and provides award-winning support and innovative teaching that focuses on learning for the professional world and the employability of our graduates.

Each taught module is worth 20 Level M credits and in-volves approximately 200 hours of total study time – which includes attendance at a 3-day intensive course (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) followed by 12 weeks of directed, home-based learning and the submission of a 5,000-word written assignment, or its equivalent. Taught modules are scheduled every 4-6 weeks and the timetable repeats annu-ally. ‘Business Schools’: a guide to degrees offered

Choosing a degree programme, let alone which universities to apply to, can be a daunting prospect. Here we look at some of the reasons why you should consider a degree course in a business or economics field.

Page 17: International Graduate

17

The term ‘Business School’ can often be a little misleading; many business schools in the UK offer far more than just business

and run degrees in accounting, management, economics and finance, as well as those that com-bine elements of one or more of those disciplines. In addition, there are opportunities to take joint degree programmes that offer elements of other subjects such as politics. An increasing number of business schools also offer four year programmes which include an element of overseas study or work experience at home or abroad.

EarningsIn a world of top up fees and student loans the starting salaries of recent graduates has become more important as the need to pay off debts as quickly as possible is paramount in the thoughts of many graduates. Evidence shows that gradu-ates of business related degrees are among the highest earners when it comes to starting salaries. It is also worth considering that the majority of graduates from all disciplines will enter the world of business in some form or other and so having a business related degree can be a clear advantage.

AccountingAccounting programmes, which are often com-bined with elements of finance or business, are increasingly popular with school leavers. Knowl-edge of accounting is a highly transferable com-modity; all organisations need both internal ac-countability, to monitor and plan their operations, and external accounting reports to be able to show their financial results to the outside world. An accounting degree gives you the ability to plan, control and assess any enterprise and many de-gree programmes will give you exemptions from professional examinations meaning that if you wish to become a chartered accountant you will have fewer exams to take. Accounting graduates have a number of career paths available: the accountancy profession, the finance industry, banking or be-

coming an in-company accountant.

EconomicsA degree in economics is an ideal mixture of quantitative and qualitative studies which shows employers that you can analyse often complex situations and also have both mathematical abil-ity and data analysis skills. One of the advantages economics graduates have is their understanding of how the world works and how changes in the global macroeconomic climate, recent examples being the credit crunch and the rise in oil process, can affect the prospects of different sectors of the economy as well as individual companies.

It is for that reason that the big financial firms em-ploy teams of economists to help their asset man-agers make investment decisions and economics graduates also take up positions in banking, as financial analysts or portfolio managers, while a growing number undertake further study and be-come academics.

Management careersMany management programmes involve a wide range of different areas, typical module lists will include operations, human resources, organiza-tional change, systems, management accounting, marketing and strategy. These topics are seen as being the building blocks for an understand-ing of management and you can then choose to undertake further studies in some of these areas through optional modules; a common theme of management programmes is their flexibility. In-creasingly, management degrees are offered as joint programmes where you can combine a study of the fundamental functions of business with specialist subjects such as information technology, tourism or leadership. Management students are well positioned to take up the graduate trainee positions which are offered by many of the leading companies but their management skills can also be applied to almost any organisation in any sec-tor of the economy. So, don’t be put off by the term ‘Business School’. Take a look at the variety of programmes that are on offer at different universities -the chances are that you will find something which will both sur-prise and interest you. Chances are that you will be lead you into a career path you had never previ-ously considered!

on shipping of the East Africa coast, and the next minute you might be helping to organise a ce-lebrity launch for the latest all-electric sports su-percar? The answer is of course, a career in public relations and marketing communications. The past decade has witnessed a rapid expansion of the public relations industry not just in the UK,but also around the world. Indeed public relations have emerged consistently as one of the top five chosen career paths for graduates in the UK and in many other countries. Similarly, advertising and marketing communications while perhaps more mature industries, continue to attract high quality graduates, particularly those with a strong interest in social media and digital communications.

Traditionally those entering a career in public re-lations or marketing communications tend to do so from a background in journalism, English, or other general humanities backgrounds. However, the past to decadehas seen a rapid increase in the number of university-based undergraduate and postgraduate courses in public relations and/or marketing communications. While there con-tinues to be a large number of entry-level open-

ings for graduates, particularly within the agency or consultancy sector, arguably the more interest-ing and demanding jobs have tended to be at the postgraduate entry level. Prof Danny Moss, who is one of the pioneers of public relations education in the UK, having led the development of Masters degrees at the University of Sterling and Man-chester Metropolitan University, now oversees the MSc in Marketing Communications and Public Relations at the University of Chester. “The Masters program at Chester is the ideal blend of theory and practice, offering students a chance to interact with practitioners from both the marketing communications and public rela-tions fields, and to work on a live campaign plan for clients which draws on all skills and knowledge that the acquired during the programme”, com-mented Prof Moss. The MSc programme has attracted students from as far afield as Georgia and the Ukraine, to Canada, the USA, India, China as well as froma cross-section of European countries. “Having a cosmopolitan student body brings a diverse set of experiences and views on the key issues that the course focuses on and makes for a more interest-ing discussion ” Prof Moss expects interest in the programme to continue to grow despite the dif-ficult current economic situation.

UWIC RANKED TOP IN THE UK FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SATISFACTION AND TEACHINGLocated in the beautiful city of Cardiff, the 2010 Guardian and Times Good University Guides rank UWIC amongst the top modern universities in the UK. Also, the latest International Student Barometer (ISB) ranks UWIC as the top university in the UK both for overall student satisfaction and the quality of its teaching..

The MBA is delivered by Cardiff School of Management, one of UWIC’s fi ve academic schools. There are approximately 400 students on the full time programme and many more on the Distance Learning and Top Up options, making it one of the largest group of programmes of its kind in Europe. It is an internationally recognised and respected qualifi cation attracting students from the public and private sectors, from the UK and abroad. The MBA brings to the fore current thinking in management education and will develop critical thinkers with effective problem solving skills at managerial level.

The course covers the fundamentals of management education - a refresher for business graduates or an introduction for non-business graduates. Core modules then broaden and critically examine key business and management fundamentals, integrated with linchpin modules in strategic management, equipping you with the ability to think conceptually and holistically. You will also undertake optional modules, from a comprehensive list allowing for focus in a particular fi eld such as fi nance, HRM or marketing, or a more general management focus.

The MBA is offered through a number of innovative routes and specialist pathways including the Full-time MBA, an MBA (Advanced Entry Programme) - On Campus and by Distance Learning and an Executive MBA (coming in 2011).

Switzerland: chocolate, ski chalets, wide open skies, mountains... and cheese. These are generally the things that spring to mind. Did you know, though, that German, French, Italian and Romansh are all official languages of this tiny country? Or that 23% of students studying in Switzerland are from overseas, making it a hugely international place to live? Had you even heard of the Romansh language? See – the education is starting already.

A side from the chocolate indulgence and cultural opportunities that are potentially available, here are a few more reasons

why you might consider Switzerland as a prime location of your university education.

Whatever your subject, the Swiss probably have it covered. In its impressive portfolio are two federal institutes of technology, both world lead-ers in science and engineering research, 10 state universities, all with high research assessment results, eight universities for applied science, and 15 for teacher education. There are also several specialist institutions, focusing on administration, international affairs, finance and hotel manage-ment. Lots of choice, then...

Despite the country having four official lan-guages, the bulk of masters and PHD teaching is done in English – so if you’re thinking of studying in Switzerland as a postgraduate the language barrier shouldn’t be a worry.

Alternatively, if you are thinking of studying for a bachelors degree, it is important that you know most undergraduate degrees are taught in either French, Italian or German. If your language skills are strong enough, think of all the benefits that studying in another language could bring – your degree couldn’t be more international.

It’s cheap. Fees and tuition are far lower than you would find for any degree in the UK, or in many other countries – Swiss universities are publically funded, and there are also a wealth of scholar-ships available.

Your visa will allow you to work up to 15 hours per week, meaning you can support yourself whilst you study, at least part of the way.Entry requirements are high – and yes, this might not seem like a good thing at first.

But when it comes to your degree, and getting into university in the first place, a challenge can only be a good thing (at least in the long-term). Securing a place on a high-demand course is a big achievement in itself; good things are likely to come your way later on.

The location of Switzerland means its climate varies dramatically, depending on where you are in the country, and of course on the time of year. Whilst the popular image is of misty mountains and snowy peaks, the south of the country has a much warmer (in summer maybe even Medi-terranean) climate. Switzerland is so small that if you’re sick of snow you can hit the road and reach sunnier climes without too much trouble. In the south, it borders Italy at Lake Como.

On a related note, just look at these train journey times: west from Geneva to Paris, three hours, £23 if booked online. South to Milan, four hours, as little as £17. North from Zurich to Strasbourg, two and a half hours, £43. Switzerland is perched right in the centre of Europe, and with so many cultur-ally vibrant places close by the chances to explore the continent are im-mense.

And, lastly: it should be very easy to find accommodation as a student in Switzer-land, even if your uni-versity doesn’t provide it.

Check out www.students.ch or www.studisurf.ch for rooms – but don’t expect them to be furnished!

Would you like to travel around the world? Are you interested in meeting people from different cultures? Would you like to climb a career ladder in relatively short time? If so, then the hospitality and tourism will most likely embrace you, says Magdy Attalla, Regional Marketing Director & Marketing Professor at BHMS Business & Hotel Management School – Lucerne, Switzerland (www.bhms.ch).

Global Career in Hospitality & Tourism

via Switzerland

Hospitality and Tourism are people indus-tries. To climb up your career ladder, you must enjoy dealing with people. Human

skills and the ability to “empathise” are of great assets. The international hospitality and tourism has global standards and very few adjustments are required to move from one country to anoth-er. Instead of re-starting again every time you take a move to another country, you will rather climb further and your value goes up every time you change jobs and change country. For example, if you are a Front Office Manager in a large hotel in Switzerland and you move to the US, you become a Rooms Division Manager in a large hotel as well. The more you move, reasonably, the higher you rise.

Besides, the hospitality and tourism have become the world’s largest employers and provide highly rewarding and successful careers irrespective of sex, nationality or cultural background, something which no other industry can match. According to

World Tourism Barometer – February 2011 “In 2010, World Tourism recovered more strongly from the shock it suffered from 2008 and 2009 due to the global financial crisis and economic recession“. The need for manpower will always be there as people are constantly crossing borders every year. It is forecasted that 1.6 billion travellers cross borders by 2020 compared with 924 millions crossed borders on 2008. The more people travel, the more the demand for new hotels, resorts, cruise liners, airports, etc.I constantly travel around the world to recruit students to study in Swiss Hotel and Business Schools and also to give presentations in various local schools and universities. I noticed that skills-based education, learning-by-doing, or emphasis on developing the human resource were lacking in many academic curricula. In contrast to Euro-pean institutions, and specifically Swiss Hotel & Business Schools, much emphasis is put on de-veloping the human resource, human skills and addressing their specific needs. prepare individuals for the corporate level of the industry. At BHMS Switzerland, we are keen to grant dual qualifications in a fastest track possible. In the undergraduate level, students earn Swiss Higher Diploma (granted by BHMS Switzerland) as well as British BA Degree (granted by The Robert Gordon University RGU). Course duration is 36 months divided into 3 blocks of 6 months study plus 3 blocks of 6 months of guaranteed paid internship in Switzerland. According to 2011 Guardian rank-ing of British Universities, RGU ranked 27th from 118 British Universities. In the postgraduate level, students earn Swiss Post Graduate Diploma as well as American MBA Degree (granted by City University of Seattle,

USA) within 24 months period; two blocks of 6 months study followed by two blocks of 6 months of guaranteed paid internship in Switzerland. Student may specialize in Global Management or Hospitality Management. This education sys-tem allows student to conclude their studies in the fastest possible track thereby allowing them to launch their global career earlier than many graduates of other institutions in Switzerland or outside Switzerland.

Our education is for dreamers, people who want to make it big in a relatively short time. It is also for people who feel the passion of “entrepre-neurs” as they could launch their own business in relatively short time with relatively small capital.

You’ve been won over by the cultural op-portunity and the countless museums and are already hankering after gelato dipped

in Nutella (a staple of the diet here) ...but once you’ve made your mind up, what else do you really need to consider? Well, the nuts and bolts of your day-to-day aca-demic life might be just slightly important. Here are a few practical things about the Italian univer-sity system that might help you on the way... - Semesters. Unlike universities in a lot of places, Italian universities only have two semesters. The first will run from September or October until Feb-ruary; the second from February to July – so really there is little difference in the time that you will actually spend in university; the terms will just be broken up differently.- Teaching. Most teaching will be done through lectures, with a very strong emphasis on indepen-dent learning. As is to be expected, the hours that you actually spend in class will vary greatly be-tween different universities and different courses.- Exams. Exams work slightly differently to what you might be used to, in that they are mainly orals. Some subjects may have separate written exams, which will be taken at a different time, and stu-dents also have the option to reject their grade and retake the exam if they wish.

- Grading. Exams are graded on a scale of 0 – 30, where 18 is a pass. These grades are used to cal-culate your degree mark on a scale of 0 – 110, with 66 being the pass mark. So not first, 2.1, 2.2 here. What does it cost?In Italy universities and colleges have the power to set their own fees – so wherever you choose to study, the costs will be different. Private universi-ties, for example, are clearly going to be a lot more expensive than public ones. On average, stu-dents at public universities should probably expect to pay between €850 and €1000 per year.Specialist courses, and doctoral courses where the student hasn’t received a grant towards their stud-ies, will also cost more than this.

Scholarships & Financial Aid Overseas students are entitled to the same finan-cial support as Italian students. This could include scholarships for good academic performance, stu-dent loans, meal tickets, assistance with housing costs and fee waivers. Largely, entitlement to these things will be based on merit and/ or financial means. Specific details, for example on what scholarships are available from specific universities, can be found on specific university websites. Check out www.study-in-italy.it for more information.

Today, it is a fast-growing state with an increasingly diverse economy and popula-tion numbering nearly 9 million people.

Historically, North Carolina has been a rural state, but over the last 30 years the state has undergone rapid urbanization.

Today the residents of North Carolina live pri-marily in urban and suburban areas. Major urban centers feature diverse and rapidly-growing popu-lations fueled largely by immi-grants from Latin America, India and Southeast Asia.

Industry and BusinessThe information and biotechnol-ogy industries have been steadi-ly on the rise since the creation of Research Triangle Park (RTP) located between Raleigh, Dur-ham, and Chapel Hill during the l950s. Beginning in the 1980s, Charlotte’s banking industry en-tered a period of rapid growth, creating what is now the second largest banking center in the United States (after New York). The North Carolina Research Campus, recently introduced in Kannapolis, promises to enrich and bolster North Carolina the way the RTP changed the Raleigh-Durham region. Similarly, in downtown Winston-Salem, the Piedmont Triad Research Park is undergoing an expansion.

Things to do in North CarolinaThree distinct geographic areas - the mountains, the central piedmont and the coast - make North Carolina a popular tourist destination. Home to the highest mountain peaks east of the Missis-sippi, the mountains of North Carolina provide outstanding winter and summer activities as well as an amazing season of fall foliage.

North Carolina, located in the southeastern part of the United States, was one of the original Thirteen Colonies settled by the British, originally known simply as Carolina.

The Piedmont has more golf courses than can be listed, miles of hiking and biking trails to ex-plore, lakes with largemouth bass waiting to be hooked, minor league baseball games to take in and much more. The coastal area features quiet historical towns and the tallest dunes on the East Coast where the waves of the Atlantic and sandy beaches in-vite surfers, sailors, fishermen, wildlife lovers and sun worshippers alike.

Graduate Education in North Carolina North Carolina has a rich heritage of academic excel-lence. Chartered in 1789, The University of North Carolina (UNC) was the first public university in the United States and the only one to graduate students in the eighteenth century. Today, UNC is a multi-campus university composed of 17 constituent institutions, 16 of

which are public educational institutions granting baccalaureate degrees and graduate degrees. Situated throughout the state, from the moun-tains to the coast, UNC campuses are as diverse as its terrain and people. ResearchThe wealth of educational and research oppor-tunities available to graduate students include arts and sciences, fine and applied arts, business, music, education, engineering, library and infor-mational sciences, agricultural sciences, health sciences, medicine (including dentistry, nursing and veterinary medicine), the law, government and public policy, natural resources, physical and mathematical sciences, and more available.

Graduate education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro is driven by the love of learning in service to the public good. Students and faculty col-laborate in research, discovery, and performance, applying knowledge to the challenges of the 21st century.

If you are thinking about a graduate program, why not explore the University of North Carolina at Greens-boro, a student-centered university offering 64 masters programs and 25 doctoral programs of study.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is a public, coeducational, doctoral-granting, residential university chartered in 1891. It is one of the three original institutions of The University of North Carolina System. With approximately 17,157 students from 49 U. Scholarships for

study in Australia

Funding opportunities for overseas students who are looking to study in Australia might be harder to find than they are for other

countries (Australia is a popular choice and a fairly sought after location, after all) – but this isn’t to say that they are nonexistent. It might just mean that you need to work exceptionally hard to be in the running for one – or that you should look for scholarships directly offered by the universities themselves, rather than from the government or larger bodies. Universities throughout Australia are crying out for talented international students to come and share their drive and ambition, and the financial rewards that they are offering reflect this. Below are just a few examples...

The University of New South Wales offers scholar-ships on basis of merit or need, as well as in other more general cases – for example for outstanding academic achievement. Winners of the International High Achiever Schol-arship, for which those with high academic attain-ment are automatically entered when they apply to the university, will be awarded between $2000 and $26,000 for one year – approximately £1360-£17,660 in Sterling. Also at UNSW is the Bill Pardy University Challenge Award. The scholarship awards money to students who have completed at least one year of study, to help them contribute to the overall cultural life of the university.

Page 35: International Graduate

“As long as you are dedicated, have proven academic ability and good character, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be in the running for a scholarship from an Australian university.”

Similarly, Griffith University in Queensland has over 400 scholarships and $4m on offer. It has specific scholarships for international students from Denmark, Botswana, South Africa, Canada, France, Germany and Mexico. Mexican students commencing at Griffith are eligible for ten partial tuition fee scholarships through the FUNED programme, which could give a 20% reduction in their total tuition fees. South African students will have two semesters of tuition covered in the South Africa 2012 Scholar-ship, whilst those from Canadian partner schools are in the running for the same with the Canadian Colleges Scholarship. For students from other countries, postgraduate coursework and research grants are available.

As long as you are dedicated, have proven aca-demic ability and good character (this is often a requirement) there is no reason why you shouldn’t be in the running for a scholarship from an Austra-lian university.

For more information on scholarship opportuni-ties visit Degrees Ahead (www.degreesahead.co.uk), or visit the websites of the individual uni-versities.

The University of Technology Sydney has scholar-ships for both incoming and current international students. Over forty scholarships are available, in everything ranging from engineering to business to doctoral law to leadership.

“Many lawyers find the undergraduate experi-ence limiting because of the requirements to take a structured program to enable them to meet professional admission requirements. Upon graduation they have rarely been able to develop specialist legal skills, or study niche areas of the law in any level of detail “said Professor Donald Rothwell, Director of the ANU College of Law graduate program. The ANU College of Law has one of the largest graduate law programs — including Coursework Certificates, Diplomas, Masters and research de-grees — in Australia. So it is an excellent place to consider undertaking graduate law study, whether you are interested in any of our myriad of gradu-ate programs, or the graduate-entry Juris Doctor (JD) degree, that qualifies you for legal practice.

The ANU College of Law endeavours to inspire you to use your legal knowledge and your legal skills, throughout your career, to work for the improvement of the law and the operation of the legal system and for the achievement of social justice. The recently developed specialisation in Law, Governance and Development is a program for development practitioners (or those aspiring to be) working in all aspects of law, governance and development in the Asia-Pacific as well as those working in a context of international institu-tions.

The specialisation in Government and Commer-cial Law offers a wide range of courses in areas such as Constitutional Law, Legislative Drafting, Government Contracts, Corporate Governance, Occupational Health and Safety Law, Dispute Management and Media and Communications Law. Students in this program can also choose subjects from the Law, Governance and Develop-ment program.

In 2011, the Environmental Law specialisation is offering new courses in Commonwealth Environ-mental Law, Australian Disaster Law, and Environ-mental Protection and Human Rights alongside established courses such as International Climate Law and Marine and Coastal Law.International Law continues to offer a wide vari-ety of specialised courses, enabling students to concentrate on particular aspects of public inter-national law, including human rights, use of force and international security, and international trade.

A new specialisation - International Security Law is being introduced in 2012It is the only program of its type offered in the Asia Pacific with a capacity to undertake selected units from the ANU National Security College, ANU Asia Pacific College of Diplomacy, and the ANU Strategic and Defence Studies Centre.

ANU College of Law graduate programs are open to lawyers and non-lawyers. Most programs are offered intensively (3-4 days) to suit both full-time and part-time study, with some courses offered online.
