The International Council of Museums (ICOM) organizes the International Museum Day annually since 1977, with the aim of highlighting a specific theme each year under a special title. On the anniversary of the International Museum Day, the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH) organizes a number of events at the National Museum and the provincial and governorates’ museums, giving special moments to the museum community and the private museums on this Day.

The world celebrates under the slogan (The Museums and Internet, New Approaches and a New Audience)

which means the new orientation of modern museums and the importance of investing the internet to reach the largest segment of the audience and to attract new interested people from different groups in addition to the use of state-of-the-art techniques to reach all community categories, especially young people.

Objectives of Celebrating the International Museum Day:

1- Sustaining the sense of patriotism among citizens and educating the community of the national heritage and the cultural legacy in our country.

2- Highlighting the important role of the museum as being a community institution which promotes the citizen’s culture and national feeling towards his/her national memory in addition to its educational role.

3- Shedding light on the most prominent museums in the KSA.

4- Benefiting from the international practices in the museums and the ways of investing them. 5- Presenting ideas and enriching the purposeful scientific dialogue and keeping updated on everything new about the museums.

6- Recognizing the modern scientific methods and the uses of the modern scientific tech-

nique in the museum work.

The SCTH has organized multiple events and activities in Riyadh and a num-ber of the KSA provinces on this occasion starting from the 25th of April as follows:

On the occasion of the International Museum Day, the SCTH organized an exhibition entitled “Our Museums Our Identity”, which was held at Panorama Mall in Riyadh for the past 5 days from 25 April to 29 April. The exhibition was designed to reach the community in public places to highlight the educational, cultural and social role of the museums. The Exhibition shed light on the most prominent projects of the SCTH in the museum field. It also presented a series of awareness messages about the importance of museums. The exhibition included a presentation of the most important artifacts of the National Museum and the provincial museums in a way that is interesting to the visitors and in line with the theme of International Museum Day 2018.

The SCTH has organized 6 tours for free over a period of 6 days, with one tour per day accommodating 45 people, including four tours for families from Panorama Mall. Each visit shall be to one of the museums identified in the visit schedule including: the National Museum, Al-Masmak Museum, the Museum of Science and Technology in Islam at Imam Muhammad bin Saud University in Riyadh, and Al-Subaie Museum. Also, a tour has been organized for the authors of public opinion and media men to visit Al-Subaie Museum and a tour dedicated to the Saudi Heritage Preservation Society.

Competition#Our Museums Our Identity

On the occasion of the International Museum Day, the SCTH has organized “Our Museums Our Identity” Competition. Receiving applications for participation in the Competition will start from 25 April until 25 May. The prizes are estimated at SR 11500.

The Competition focuses on taking photos to visit the nearest museum in the province, whether photographs or videos and upload them on YouTube or share them using the hashtag #Our Museums_Our Identity.

Aim of the Competition:

• Urging the community members to visit the museums with their families.

• Increasing the interest of Saudis and foreign residents to visit the museums in all provinces in the Kingdom.

• Through the participations, we will recognize the museums spreading around the Kingdom.

• The videos and photos presented for participation will be used in the SCTH works.

Provincial Museums

The SCTH, represented in the Provincial Division, has interacted with the celebration of the International Museum Day at the KSA, which was launched on Wednesday under the Slogan #Our Museums_Our Identity in concurrence with the International Museum Day.

The SCTH seeks, through its awareness programs, its direct interaction with the community, and within the route of raising awareness of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cultural Heritage Program, to launch a number of programs and scientific forums that contribute to instilling the values and enhancing the national identity of citizens with educating them about everything new in the tourism and national heritage field. In light of the role of the SCTH in this regard, the Department of Museums is celebrating the International Museum Day believing that museums play important role towards the community as cultural, educational, and entertainment institutions.

Asir Province – Al-Jahal Private Museum

Al-Jahal Heritage Museum celebrated the International Museum Day on 25/4/2018 and received a number of citizens and school students free of charge. Free meals and all the necessary services were provided by the museum owner, who highlighted the importance of the national heritage preservation.

Asir Province – Al-Namas

The SCTH office in Al-Namas, represented in Al-Namas Museum and 3 private museums, has participated in the celebration of the International Museum Day on 25/4/2018, in coordination with Al-Namas Education Department, to receive school students so as to highlight the importance of antiquities and heritage and their preservation, in addition to the presentation of an educational program on the significance of national heritage.

Asir Province - Bisha

The SCTH’s office in Bisha, represented in Bal Qarab Museum – Al-Hifah Heritage Museum, has participated in celebrating the International Museum Day on 25/4/2018AD.

It received a number of visitors to highlight the importance and preservation of antiquities and heritage as well as presenting an educational program about the significance of heritage and antiquities.

Tabouk Province

The Tabouk Castle Museum team participated in this occasion by receiving and guiding the audience and introducing them to its most prominent collections and raising the cultural awareness of the country treasures, which have been maintained because of believing in this national cultural heritage. Moreover, the Tabouk Museum team has provided the visitors with souvenirs and introductory pamphlets of the most important archeological and heritage landmarks in Saudi Arabia.

Madinah Province

The team of the SCTH Branch in Madinah Province has participated in this occasion through holding a meeting with the museum owners (the railway station and model private museums), including a field visit to one of the model museums and handing a license over to one of the owners to operate a private museum.

The meeting discussed means of activating the role of public and private museums in spreading the knowledge about the culture and heritage of the peoples in addition to emphasizing the complementary relationship between the SCTH and owners of private museums and activating aspects of communication in various fields.

Qassim Province

Various museums in Qassim Province, of which 20 private museums were licensed by the SCTH, have witnessed different activities to interact with this Day. The Director General of the SCTH Qassim Branch clarified that the Branch interaction with this occasion is because of realizing the importance of museums and enhancing the sense of patriotism. It also provides an opportunity to share ideas and experiences and to introduce the cultural dimension of the Kingdom via the cultural and heritage legacy displayed in such museums.

Taif Governorate

Taif Governorate has witnessed a variety of events in Shobra Palace Museum and Al-Sharif Museum in Umm Al-Sebaa district, on the occasion of the International Museum Day in the Kingdom. Such events reflect the social life of ancient times, the old handicrafts, the old tillage and agriculture tools, old trade caravans, and classic cars. These events targeted all segments of society in order to develop the sense of patriotism and introduce the cultural dimension of the Kingdom through the cultural and heritage collections displayed in those museums.

Makkah Al-Mukarramah

Al-Zaher Museum of Antiquities and Heritage in Makkah has organized many heritage, educational, and awareness events and coordination meetings to schedule the museum's visits throughout the year, in line with the world celebrations of the International Museum Day.

Dawmat Al-Jandal Governorate

The SCTH office in Dawmat Al-Jandal has hosted a number of schools on the occasion of the International Museum Day and the students had the chance to recognize the importance and role of the museum. Then they toured around the archeological and heritage sites.

Sakakah Governorate

A group of student visits to Sakakah antiquities and the visitor office as well as watching documentary films on the national heritage. Also, a familiarization and awareness program was organized highlighting the importance of museums.

In addition, they paid visits to some private museums in the Province such as Al-Nuwaiser and Dr. Nawwaf Al-Rashed Museums.

Al-Qurayyat Governorate

The SCTH office in Al-Qurayyat celebrates the International Museum Day 2018 through organizing a number of tours for school students to the archeological sites in the Governorate as well as preparing presentations about the museum importance.

Al-Majma’ah

The SCTH office in Al-Majma’ah, represented in Al-Majma’ah Museum and private museums, has celebrates the International Museum Day 2018.

On the occasion of the celebration of the International Museum Day 2018, Al-Majma’ah Museum held a competition for students inside the Museum, where toured the Museum and listened to an explanation about its collections and a general definition of museums and their importance. After that, the Competition was held asking questions about what was explained to the students, encouraging strong interaction, and the prizes were awarded to the winners.

Al-Majma’ah – Ababtain Museum

Ababtain Museum in Rawdat Sudair city has participated on the International Museum Day 2018, in coordination with the SCTH Al-Majma’ah office, through receiving many visitors from inside and outside the governorate and the school students in order to introduce the importance and preservation of the national heritage, visit the historic library, and a public tour around Abdullah Ababtain Farms.

Al-Majma’ah – Al-Essa Museum

Al-Essa Museum in the city of Oudat Sudair participated on the International Museum Day 2018, where Mr. Mohammed Al-Eissa received visitors from inside and outside the Governorate as well as school students. Also, they listened to an explanation about the Museum's collections and organized a tour for the visitors in the heritage village in Oudat Sudair.

A Meeting Held between the Owners of Private Museums at Riyadh in the Museum of Science, History, and Technology in Islam at Imam Mohammad bin Saudi University

Within the framework of cooperation between the SCTH and the Museum of Science and Technology at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University in Riyadh, the International Museum Day of Museums was activated on Wednesday, 25 April 2018. The celebration of the International Museum Day aims to enhance the relationship between the museum and community since the museum in modern science is not only a place for preserving historical, heritage, and cultural treasures, but has become an important scientific center contributing to the dissemination of knowledge and science and introducing human heritage in all domains. Also, the celebration is aimed at highlighting the important role of private museums, which contributed significantly to the conservation and display of the KSA heritage and the presentation of individual efforts in the field of museums and their development.

A Workshop at the Museum of Science, History and Technology in Islam at Imam Muhammad bin Saud University

The workshop included the following:

• A presentation given by the Dean of the Institute of the History of Arabic Science about the experience of establishing a museum of the history of science and technology in Islam.

• A documentary film about the history of the Museum of “the History of Science and Technology in Islam”.

• A presentation given by the director of the museum section at the SCTH about the SCTH efforts exerted in supporting the private museums.

• A presentation given by the official of the SCTH Riyadh Branch about the partnership with private museum owners in the licensing procedures for private museums.

• A presentation given by the official of safety in the civil defense about the safety procedures in private museums.

• A presentation given by a private museum owner (Diyar Al-Ezz Museum) about the economic impact of museum events.

• Granting licenses to a number of private museum owners.

• A tour around the Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam including watching a simulation of planets and stars in the planetarium.

Because of the importance of the annual celebration and highlighting the essential role and trying to make use of the Internet to shed light on the significance of museums and their role towards the community to enhance national identity and to benefit from them in the fields of education and culture, the SCTH has organized several events and activities in Riyadh and a number of the KSA Provinces.
