District Director’s ReportKen Rollins

Last October 26-29th Rita & I attended the fall IOBG International Convention on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. It was exciting to meet International IOBG members from other Districts. We discussed the good things and some they need to work on in their respected Districts and yacht clubs. The convention was well attended and everyone had a very good time. Our hats go off to Carol & Phil Promessi, all the yacht clubs and the IOBG members that made us feel at home. It was a fantastic weekend. An added thanks goes to Shoreline Yacht Club and Huntington Harbor Yacht Club for showing IOBG a very good time. District 1 had a very good showing at the Fall Convention; all but one Board Member attended the Convention at Long Beach.

A big thanks to District 1 IOBGA and The Corinthian Yacht Club of Tacoma for sponsoring another Race for the Stars Regatta in support of Make A Wish & Wishing Star Foundations.

I’d like to thank Bob Weber, Craig Waffle, Jim Hinckley, RBAW, Clover Island and Spokane Yacht Clubs and all the individuals that participated in the first IOBG District 1 major fundraiser supporting Make A Wish and Wishing Star Foundations.

President Art Kovarnik presents a ‘thank you gift’ from District 1 to Past President/District Director Ken Rollins

Thanks to all that came to our spring meeting in Seattle and a big thank you to Totem Yacht Club for hosting the meeting you did a wonderful job. We had a very good turnout for the meeting.

Wow! Who would believe District 1 could try an experiment for a fundraiser and do what we accomplished. It’s just beyond anything one could imagine to think we all raised over $9,000 for the Wishing Star and Make a Wish Foundations. I can’t begin to tell you just how wonderful it felt to present a check for $4,500 to Mary Meek from Wishing Star out of Spokane and John Milgard, representing Make a Wish, and his daughter Erin, a two time cancer survivor. Thank you all for making this possible. You all deserve a pat on the back. There is a nice article in the March-April issue of Nor’westing about the fundraiser. Thank you to Jim Hinckley and all who helped get the article submitted.

Please start making plans to attend our Change of Watch meeting September 14, 15 & 16 in Marysville, There’s lots to do up there! There is one of the largest outlet malls around and one of the larger casinos in Washington. I’m sure they would like nothing more than to take some of your hard earned money. I would love to have a great turnout so please plan to attend.

Opening Day in SeattleIt’s official the 2007 boating season is open! The IOBG was there in force to help make it happen, including International President Carol Promessi and her husband Phil. Thank you to Puget Sound Yacht Club who did a wonderful job of making all of us very welome and to Bill and Lea Hickman again for the use of their boat None of us could have made it across the waters without them!

As fall will be here before we know it I want to remind you that our annual dues are due in October. If possible we hope members pay them at the upcoming Fall meeting in Marysville. No change in amount; they are still $45.00 each.

I hope to see you at the summer picnic at Brownsville Marina July 20-22. If I miss you at Brownsville, have a great summer on the water with family and friends.

A Word From the Editor:

My apologies for the lateness of the newsletter. My computer is not cooperating at all. Maybe the new computer will ‘play nice’ with the new publishing software I have purchased.

Because of the time sensative nature of the information in the newsletter, I have mailed (or emailed) a Summer Picnic flyer and a Membership Roster Information Change Form to every District #1 member (at no cost to the District). These same forms can be found on the following pages of my 1st Vice President’s report.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding... Mary :)

2nd Vice President’s ReportJim Hinckley

At the banquet of the District 1 Spring Meeting the ten new inductees entertained the audience with song and dance vying to become #1 in the eyes of the panel of judges. The judges were Laurene “Abdul” Mineke, Rod “Jackson” Mineke, and Jeff “Simon” Moulton.

After much to-do and audience participation, it was declared that all four groups were indeed winners. The new inductees are Berry Ellingson and Pat Hansen from Puget Sound Yacht Club; Dennis Dearing, George Harmon, and Karen Dickens from Hat Island Yacht Club; Frank Parks from Shelton Yacht Club; Terrilynn Griswold, Howard Raefield, and Chris Heide from Kingston Cove Yacht Club; and William “Bernie” Dyers from Carver Cruisers.

We welcome all of you into “Blue Gavel” and look forward to your ideas and participation into this w o r t h w h i l e organization.

Good things are happening in District 1. The District just completed a fundraising project for “Make a Wish/Wishing Star Foundations” raising $9000 for the foundations. A committee has been formed to evaluate the project, determine if the District should continue with this project, and if so, make recommendations on how to better conduct the project. One of my recommendations will be to share a portion of the funds with the International Humanitarian Foundation. If you have any ideas or input, please contact any District 1 Board Member.

Last winter I either e-mailed or mailed out letters to you asking you to go to your local chapters and encourage old members to rejoin IOBG or ask Past Commodores not yet members to join District 1. The response was very positive. Let’s go and encourage those that were not able to attend the Spring Conference to join us this September 14-16 in Marysville, WA.

For new inductees remember to enclose a letter of recommendation, the application, and a check for $65. The $65 covers the Initiation fees, the International dues, and District 1 dues for the first year. Also be reminded that membership renewals ($45) are due October 1st.

Mail all correspondence and applications to PC Louise Condon, 5202 Greenwood Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98103-6019. Renewal applications and new member applications can be obtained from the IOBG website.

The Kids Win

In my last IOBG District 1 article, I asked everyone to ratchet it up a notch with the ticket sales on our “Cruise to Alaska” project. At that time, all expenses had been paid, but there was only $1,450 to distribute to each organization. Well you did excel!! The last six weeks the ticket sales soared.

At our Spring IOBG Banquet, John Milgard and his daughter Erin, representing “Make a Wish” and Mary Meek, representing “Wishing Star” each received a check for $4,500 to take back to their foundations. John had a personal experience to share with the group. His daughter, Erin, was diagnosed with a terminal liver cancer at age 7. She was a recipient of “Make a Wish Foundation” and spent a week at Disney World in Orlando.

Seven years later and after many sessions of chemotherapy and radiation, she has been declared to be in total remission and will start her freshman year in high school this fall. Following a huge round of applause for Erin, it was time for the drawing. The barrel containing the ticket stubs was given several turns to mix them up one last time before Erin drew out the winning stub. The winner of the “Cruise to Alaska” was Jim Hanley and his wife Nikki from Spokane Yacht Club.

I want to personally thank Jerry Reese, Dave Mangus, and Rocky McQueen, from Spokane Yacht Club for listening to the idea of this fundraising project and then encouraging Spokane Yacht Club to partner with “Wishing Star Foundation” to set up a booth at the Spokane Boat Show. This idea caught on throughout the State as booths were set up at the Tri-Cities Boat and RV Show, the Seattle Boat Show, and the Tacoma Boat Show. I thank each and every person who participated on this project to make it the success that it was. I know that we have much room for improvement, but I also know that it was a huge success for the first time.

Again I thank all of you.

Jim Hinckley 2nd Vice President and Membership Chairman.

District #1 is hosting the International Order of the Blue Gavel

2008 International Conference

2008 International IOBG PresidentIn October 2008, Jerry Rudd (Totem Yacht Club) will be initiated as the 2008 International President. IOBG members from all around the United States, New Zealand, Japan, Canada and England could be visiting us in Seattle for the 2008 International Order of the Blue Gavel conference. This is our chance to ‘showcase’ our District and the Pacific Northwest.

Although the International level of the Blue Gavel will be contributing a small portion to Jerry’s inaugural expenses, District #1 will be having fundraisers throughout the year to help raise money for this exciting event.

2008 Conference Fundraisers: by Mary R. Nye

The Seattle Mariner Fundraiser

Saturday afternoon during the Spring Conference in Seattle, Norm West conducted a class for obtaining a Washington State Alcohol Servers Permit. By obtaining these permits, these individuals will be able to work the Seattle Mariners concession stands thus raising funds to help defray the expenses for hosting the International IOBG Convention that will be held in Seattle in October 2008.

A planning committee has been established to organize the International Convention, so if you have any suggestions, please pass them on to Jerry Rudd, Mary Nye, or Jim Hinckley.
