Study International Pharmacoeconomicsand Health Economics –And gain the expertise needed to combine economic paradigms with health and pharmaceutical issues from an international perspective
Are you interested in the economic side of the field
of health care and pharmaceutical development? Do
you want to obtain a scientifically founded degree,
which is also market-oriented? Would you like to
unite economic competence with an understanding of
the health, medical and pharmaceutical fields at an
international level?
The collaborative, post-graduate programme Master
of Science (MSc) in International Pharmacoeconomics
and Health Economics offered by Cardiff University
and taught by Hochschule Fresenius (HSF), a state-
accredited University of Applied Sciences in Germany,
is designed to provide exactly such a foundation for
achieving your career objectives in the health and
pharmaceutical sectors.
The course is specifically designed as a part-time
programme of six semesters or as a full-time pro-
gramme of four semesters, in order to accommodate
those already working in a professional field, as well
as former undergraduates pursuing a subsequent
course of study at master’s level.
Multi-Disciplinary and Comparative StudiesThe MSc degree course thoroughly prepares you to
meet the demands of the dynamic fields of health
economics and pharmacoeconomics. It combines
practically oriented economic competence with
pharmaceutical and health related issues from an
international perspective. In addition to the
excellence of the HSF and Cardiff University‘s te-
aching staff, the programme also utilises the exper-
tise of external lecturers from around the world,
who are currently active in renowned institutions and
businesses in the fields of pharmaceutical and health
sciences.
Practical Studies
An essential element of the MSc course is a compul-
sory, one-semester residency programme providing
a direct opportunity for applied knowledge and re-
search at a private or government organisation. The
Welsh School of Pharmacy at Cardiff University has
gained many years of experience and close contact
across the field of healthcare, i.e. in the pharmaceu-
tical industry, hospitals, health insurance and health
industry. The professionalism of these contacts has
been proven through close practical contact for other
courses of study in the past and provides the perfect
basis for Master level research and residency place-
ments. Professionals already active in the fields of
pharmaceutical and health sciences are encouraged
to integrate issues of their professional research into
their own residency programme.
Progressive and Targeted Studies
The first semester comprises predominantly taught
material at Master level, taking students from typical
graduate standard at entry, to a contemporary
research base level. In the second semester, studen-
ts undertake a mixture of taught and more indepen-
dent, project-based studies, where interpretation of
information, methods of analysis, and research-ba-
sed skills are practised and developed. Finally, the se-
cond year is primarily research based, beginning with
the hands-on, residency placement for one semester
and culminating with the submission and assess-
ment of an individual dissertation in a field associated
with pharmacoeconomics and/or health economics.
Graduate-based learning develops systematically
into research-based learning as the programme
progresses.
In general, the programme has been constructed
using the modular approach taking into account
demand, supply and management. The
pharmacoeconomic theme develops out from the
Health Economic principles on macro and micro
levels. More specialised optional modules are
introduced to enable specialisation or focus on a
particular career path. Some specialised areas include:
– Healthcare Systems and Regulations
– Ethical Issues in Healthcare Resource
Management
– International Pharmaceutical Programmes,
including Benefits, Reimbursement and
Pricing Mechanisms
Future Prospects
Students are taught specific concepts and tools of
economic analysis in health care and pharmaceutical
development. International Pharmacoeconomics and
Health Economics graduates are in high demand as
a result of their double qualification in the scientific
and business field. Their skills represent an
exceptional asset to finding professional openings at
international firms, consultancy groups, and
international organisations or to pursue an academic
career in the specific field of health and
pharmacoeconomics. In addition, they have excellent
career and promotion opportunities at health care
organisations, medical insurance companies and in
the pharmaceutical industry.
Admission Requirements
Applicants for the MSc in International Pharmacoeco-
nomics and Health Economics Programme must fulfil
the following requirements:
– An undergraduate degree (Bachelor/ honours
degree or equivalent) of at least 360 CATS or
180 ECTS points in a health or pharmaco-
related field of study
– Proof of English language skills: TOEFL
certificate of 90 pts (internet based) or IELTS
of 6.5 pts
If the undergraduate degree is not in the field
of health or pharmaceutical sciences,
documentation demonstrating six months direct
experience in the health or pharmaceutical sci-
ence field is required.
School(s) involved
The programme is offered by the Welsh School
of Pharmacy (WSP) at Cardiff University in
collaboration with the Hochschule Fresenius
(HSF) University of Applied Sciences, Idstein,
Germany and leads to a Cardiff University award.
The programme is delivered entirely at the HSF Uni-
versity and is jointly taught by the two Universities.
The course is not available for study in Cardiff.
Programme Language
This course is conducted completely in the English
language.
Mode of study
The mode of study is full-time or part-time, whereas
some modules are also offered as free-standing units
to support continuing professional development and
training of professionals employed by organisations
already involved in pharmacoeconomics and health
economics. As freestanding modules, they will not
lead to a Cardiff University award. Instead the can-
didates may obtain a certificate of attendance/ com-
pletion issued jointly by the WSP and HSF.
Cardiff University is recognised in independent go-
vernment assessments as one of Britain’s leading te-
aching and research universities.
Founded by Royal Charter in 1883, the Universi-
ty today combines impressive modern facilities and
a dynamic approach to teaching and research with
its proud heritage of service and achievement. The
University’s breadth of expertise in research and re-
search-led teaching encompasses: the humanities;
the natural, physical, health, life and social sciences;
engineering and technology; preparation for a wide
range of professions; and a longstanding commit-
ment to lifelong learning. Cardiff is a member of the
Russell Group of Britain’s leading research univer-
sities. Cardiff University is ranked 7th for research
from more than 100 Universities in the UK and has a
current (2006/2007) research income of 112 million
pounds sterling.
Cardiff University also has a long tradition of welco-
ming international students. With over 3000 interna-
tional students currently studying at Cardiff, repre-
senting over 100 countries, the University offers a
unique multi-cultural environment.
The Welsh School of Pharmacy is one of twenty-four
UK schools of pharmacy and the only one in Wales,
and was ranked first by a recent Guardian newspa-
per league table and by a recent student satisfaction
survey. For over 80 years, the School has cultivated a
strong tradition of innovative pharmaceutical educa-
tion, scientific research and latterly, continuing edu-
cation to pharmacy practitioners.
The Hochschule Fresenius (University of Applied Sci-
ences) emerged as an institution from the “Fresenius
Chemical Laboratory”, founded in 1848 by Carl Re-
migius Fresenius. From its inception, the Fresenius
Chemical Laboratory was dedicated to both practical
laboratory work and educational training.
In 1961 the chemistry school was separated from the
research laboratory (now the Fresenius Institut AG)
and three years later received state recognition as an
engineering school. Finally in 1971 the school became
a University of Applied Sciences providing a course of
study in chemical engineering. Since then two new
faculties, Economics & Media, and Health, as well as
numerous courses of study, have been introduced.
The HSF is a private, state-accredited University of
Applied Sciences with an international focus, which
places emphasis on the newest scientific areas and
research-led teaching. Through close collaboration
with other European universities, the HSF makes
programmes of study possible, which are unique to
Germany. A network of various international business
enterprises allows the trainees and students to com-
plete internships around the world.
The educational choices include full-time and part-
time programmes of study, as well as vocational trai-
nee programmes in three faculties at the locations of
Idstein, Cologne, Darmstadt, Zwickau, Hamburg and
Munich in Germany, as well as Vienna in Austria.
