432 The Canadian Journal of Economtiics and Political Science

varying from lumbering and mining to the highly industrialized area of Belleville.

The organization of the report is interesting in itself. The geology and physiography of the area are outlined and defined in considerable detail. Land settlement from 1615 until the present time is traced with the result that much local history is introduced and related to the physical background of the area. Mention is made of the early development of iron mines in the area and of the gold strike which preceded all other such developments in the province. With the overwhelming preponderance of mines in northern Ontario, one tends to forget that it was in the mines of Tweed and Marmora that the men who developed the northern properties received their basic training in hard rock mining. The section on land use is of technical interest to conservationists with its classification of soils, assessment of land capability, study of present employment, and recommendations for future use. Forestry is covered by an examination of historical data concerning the original forest cover, forest products through the years from the era of squared timber, present woodland conditions, and current and required forest conservation measures, along with recommendations on future forest policy. The river itself is studied to determine the causes of and the remedies for the frequent floods which have occurred in the past. The wildlife and recreational phases of the conservation problem are well handled.

The report is well documented with some fifty illustrations and fortv-two maps and charts. Over forty recommendations of varying degrees of im- portance are made and are summarized at the beginning of the report.

International Political Science Abstracts (Documnentation politique inter- national); published with the assistance of UNESCO and the Coordinating Committee on Documentation in the Social Sciences (Oxford: Basil Black- vell; Paris: Presses Universitaires de France, $3.00 a year; 75c per issue). This is the first of the services inaugurated by the International Political Science Association to make its appearance. Publication will be quarterly. Each issue will contain 250 to 300 abstracts (averaging 100-200 words) of the contents of articles in political science from fifty or more specialized periodi- cals. In general, articles published in English will be abstracted in French, and articles in other languages will be abstracted in English. The first issue, just published, is a double number containing abstracts of articles published in 1950; the September issue will cover the first half of 1951; subsequent issues will cover subsequent quarters. The Abstracts is sponsored by I.P.S.A. and the International Studies Conference. [C. B. MACPHERSON]
