FALL SEMESTER SEPTEMBER 16 - DECEMBER 6
• Regular classes start on September 16
• Residency requirement: in residence, full time
• Bus transfer for Vienna on 27-29 September (sign up sheet TBA)

each academic program elects two representatives to the SU Assembly

• Four credits from another department(s) during the academic year without permission from the
Head of Department
• Additional fours credits from Department of Political Science and School of Public Policy during the
academic year without permission from the Head of Department.

ATTENDANCE REGULATIONS • Attendance at classes and other compulsory elements of a course (simulation, on the spot visit etc.)
is obligatory. Exceptionally, absences are justified only in the circumstances described below:
• In case of illness, absences are justified if supported by appropriate medical documentation, to be
submitted to the IR office.
• Absences unrelated to medical reasons are conditionally accepted only if approved by the course
instructor.
• „More than a week of unjustified absence – meaning absence without notice, or absence without
approval – noted by an instructor and the department or program head, may result in the
immediate suspension of financial aid. The decision is made by the department or program head.
Normal courses of appeal are applicable to this case as well.”
• Unjustified absence from 30% or more of the classes and other obligatory events leads to the
dismissal from the Masters program.
• The total number of justified and unjustified absences must not exceed one third of all the classes.

MASTER OF ARTS (MA) IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS (1 YEAR)
PROGRAM STRUCTURE
• 10 months/3 terms (teaching only during Fall and Winter terms, Spring for thesis writing (April-May)
• 40 credits (32 course credits, 8 credits for Master’s thesis and defense)
• Thesis submission – June 1, 2020;
• Thesis defenses – mid-June;
• Graduation – Friday, June 19, 2020
MANDATORY COURSES

Credits for these two courses are awarded at the end of the Winter term

TRACK SYSTEM AT IR DEPARTMENT (ONLY FOR MA 1 YEAR)
MA program consists of three tracks: International Relations Theory and Law, International Political Sociology and History, and International Political Economy and Development.
All elective courses belong to one or two track – check carefully in the Handbook!
For the Fall term every student has to register for courses belonging to at least two tracks
Over the course of the academic year students are required to take courses from all three tracks.
FALL SEMESTER
Students must take the following two mandatory courses:
• Research Design and Methods in IR course (Part I)
• Academic Writing for International Relations (Part I)
And register in addition for 12 CREDITS (elective courses)
WINTER SEMESTER Two mandatory courses:
• Academic Writing for International Relations (2 credits)
• Research Design and Methods in IR (4 credits)
And register for 14 credits (elective courses)
SPRING SEMESTER
Thesis Research and Writing (8 credits)
• The word limit for the thesis is 10,000 words (+/- 15%)
• Deadline: 2 pm on Friday, June 1, 2020
• Supervision/thesis writing info-session in autumn

• Pass the Academic Writing for International Relations course (2 credits);
• Pass the Research Methods and Design in IR courses with a grade C+ or above (4 credits);
• Achieve the required number of credits in the Fall Semester (12 credits) and Winter Semester (14 credits);

• Accumulate 40 credits with a cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.66 or higher.

• For the Hungarian Certificate program you have a final oral examination,
which contsists of 2 parts:
