International School of Kenya Creative Arts – Learning Strands Empowering students to create solutions for tomorrow’s challenges The five strands define key areas of learning for each discipline in the creative arts. Activities will often integrate learning from more than one strand. Learning within each strand and discipline is described below. Developing practical knowledge and skills Developing creative expression of concepts and ideas Communicating, interpreting and reflecting in the arts Understanding the arts in context Developing connections, relationships and applications in the arts Visual Arts Students will apply knowledge of elements and principles to make objects and images, using art-making conventions and a variety of techniques, tools, materials, processes and procedures. Students will generate and develop visual, ideas in response to a variety of motivations, using imagination, observation, a study of artist’s works and visual stimuli. Students will explore, describe and assess how different media influence the communication and interpretation of ideas in their own and others’ work. Students will investigate the purposes of objects and images in past and present cultures and identify contexts in which they were or are made, viewed and valued. Students apply what they learn in the visual arts across subject areas. They develop competencies and creative skills in problem solving, communication, and management of time and resources that contribute to lifelong learning and career skills. They also learn about careers in and related to the visual arts.

Visual Arts

Music

Students studying music develop practical knowledge through experiences in rhythm and movement, instrumental and vocal technique, aural differentiation, and applied theory. They explore the connections between practical skill, convention, and expression. They also demonstrate skills in solo and ensemble settings.

Students studying music develop musical ideas through listening, improvising and composing. They integrate concepts and techniques from a variety of sources, organizing and communicating their ideas individually and in a group.

Students studying music interpret and respond to meanings and intentions communicated through various musical styles. They investigate the structure of musical forms and the ways in which meaning is conveyed. They use appropriate terminology to analyze, interpret and reflect on musical performances and symbols.

Students studying music explore the historical and modern contexts of musical forms. They develop an understanding of the sociological foundations and cultural expressions of music. Through practical and theoretical studies, they examine the significance of musical expression among individuals, communities and societies.

Students studying music apply skills and knowledge to the other art disciplines. They develop competencies and creative skills in problem solving, communication and resource management that contribute to lifelong learning and career skills.

Theatre Arts

Students investigate and develop an awareness of movement, expression, ensemble, observation, elements of design, vocal and sound skills in individual and group contexts.

Students apply knowledge and skills to processes of acting, directing, devising and designing formal and informal theatre with the intended goal of performance.

Students critique and derive meaning from theatrical works, practitioners and artists to work toward communicating these observations and interpretations through research investigations, class presentation, devised and scripted theatre.

Students analyze the role and development of theatre and multi-media in historical and contemporary cultural frameworks in order to facilitate inter-cultural connections and relationships – noting diversity as it relates to theatre.

Students apply their knowledge in theatre and multi-media across subject areas. They develop competencies and creative skills in problem solving, communication and time management that contributes to life long learning and career skills. They also examine the relationships between careers and theatre arts.
